August 2021 BOTM, 120 in D2, ironwood and brass

Brilliant hack! Thank you. I'm astonished that there are still 60 left. I thought this would sell out within hours. I literally ran to my PC once I saw it on my phone and banged in my order.
Not a surprise that they didn't go like hotcakes after being posted on the Buck website, the price point is on the high side.

If you're a BCCI member, with the discount, you can get a superior 120 user knife in the form of the 120 Pro, at a much lesser price. Without the BCCI discount, it's not all that much more than this BOTM (with no discount offered), and the S35VN blade on the Pro beats the heck out of D2.

The big draw is the Ironwood handle, and for some/many, a no fuller blade. But the D2 is more of a drawback than a selling point, for a user knife in my opinion. A regular 420HC and lower price would have insured that they went quick.

I had to think about buying one... hard. Having just spent $$$'s in the last two months on Heritage D2's and a couple of the recent limited edition run knives, the budget was already strained.

If this 120 wasn't such a good match for the limited edition 119 Ironwood I just bought, I would have definitely passed on it. My state has a 9.75% sales tax, so this BOTM came in at just under two hundred bucks, a real splurge for someone on a retirement income budget, so it's tighten the belt time, no matter what pops up from Buck in the next month.

Not to be too critical of another person's "business model" but it wouldn't hurt my feeling much if this crimps the style of a few of the eBay "RARE!!! Limited Edition Buck BOTM No Longer Made!! RARE!!! only $300" guys 😂 Easy to make that sale when they sell out in less than 24 hours... 3-4 days? Not so much.
I don’t care what people do with their knives they buy. As long as the number of knives are controlled that are purchased: nobody can tell you not to sell anything you purchase. You can burn it, sell it, smash it, give it away or keep it.
Every BOTM this comes up. I suppose if someone missed one it can be frustrating.

I guess you're right ... there are still 46 left. The ironwood and brass are big draws for me (and, yeah, I like the groove-less blade). I really doubt most people will use the knife, so the blade material is kind of immaterial. The Pros are great knives, and definitely what I'd buy as a "user". I'm not a micarta fan, though, especially "burlap" micarta, and the Pro Series's handles don't do anything for me.

I received mine today and snapped a photo with its little brother. Its got some weight to it...comes in at 11.5 oz.

If the BOTM sells out too quickly than Buck needs to either make more knives, raise the price, or both. I would want to make as much profit as possible and sell them all before the next BOTM comes out. Sounds like they found the right mix of how many to make and price although they are still selling out rather quickly. As long as they are all selling out within a short period of time how can we criticize either the number made or price? After all that's why they are in business. To make a profit.

I guess these great pictures are having an effect - only 19 left ! Seeing the ironwood makes people (drool) want one : ) And yes, I think the absence of the fuller/blood groove makes the knife look so much better. Also, nobody has mentioned the upgraded distressed brown leather sheath - which looks perfect with the ironwood handle.

Great idea ! As I am also curious. We should do a formal questionnaire (Noun. "a set of printed or written questions with a choice of answers, devised for the purposes of a survey or statistical study"). Email said questionnaire to all Bladeforums members worldwide and beyond.

Question # 1

Did the bladeforums pictures have an effect on your purchase of the 2021 August BOTM 120 General ?

Hi folks, this is my first post, and I'm not sure if it's the right place to ask this question: why is the Buck 120 called General? Does the name allude to a general purpose knife?
Thank you very much for your reply.

Did a quick google - I could not find the answer. Post the answer if you ever find out - thank you.

This reply is almost as good as your statement. 😀😀😀😀

(I guess these great pictures are having an effect- only 19 left !)

To guess: estimate or suppose (something) without sufficient information to be sure of being correct.

No reason to be so offended. Your response shows your goat is easy to get. I was curious how many were purchased by BF members.

For some reason you (your name goes here). Was bothered. My bad I guess.

Huh, Deja Vu.... I just answered this question in a different thread. Thought I was lost for a moment. You posted the question twice so I guess I'll answer it twice. Addendum...actually I just found you have posted this question in 3 different threads, you are persistent.

Yes, it does allude to a General purpose knife. It was not a military connotation. I'm sure I'll never be able to find the reference again but the intent was to play off the word Special for the 119.

I couldnt find any articles on how the name General ended up on the 120. General purpose probably explains it.

Ok, it took awhile but I found the reference I was thinking of about the "General" name.
See post #20 by chickentrax (inactive) in this thread from 2009.

In post # 20, it seems to me, chickentrax is posing the question also. Not confirming the name.

Thank you for the info.
