Batoning ESEE 5 into Becker BK-2 and vice versa !!

The thicker grind toward and at the edge of the ESEE made most of the difference.I own both brands of blades and love em all.I know that in a survival scenario the BK2 would not fail me.

Here is the thing. I did this for fun. I replied to a post a couple weeks ago and mentioned doing it. Someone said "put your money where your mouth is". So, I did.

Sure it made me sick to take that first whack. But, in the name of science, it was worth it.

Becker is a little thinner.

What made me think to do this was when I went to re-profile the edge on my other BK-2, I could use a double cut bastard file. Tried to do that with the ESEE and it would not even bite into the steel. This lead me to think I could baton an ESEE through the softer Becker.

I honestly didn't think that you would actually do it. Well played! BUT, I do recall you saying that you would 'baton through the BK2.' I'm not saying that you need to do this again (I don't want to see any more knives hurt Becker or ESEE), but there are so many variable differences between the two knives that I honestly don't think that either could baton through the other.

Good job on that. I think there are very few of us here on BF that would have gone through with it.

I still don't see a winner here

The BK2 has a thinner grind, so the only thing you found out is how to destroy two excellent blades.

Why?
is the question

I love Becker and Esee knives and this proves nothing except a total waste of time and effort for nothing.

In your videos you act like you accomplished some results, I'm still waiting to see them.......:thumbdn:

TAG, good vid, one I have often thought of making. My first question is one of numbers. Could you microm or put a caliper on the knives where the notch stops? If my theory and metallurgical knowledge serves me, they should be about the same thickness. If you don't have the tools, its cool I just wanted to know.

All hell breaking loose? Not hardly. The ESEE5 and BK2 are great knives, and both are in my possesion as I write this. The HT on both knives are about the same, give or take, and I firmly believe that neither knife will out perform the other, in any given task. The BK2 is a better slicer, stock out of the box than the ESEE5. It has a higher grind and edge geometry than the ESEE5.

Thanks TAG, interesting vid, cool story, and costly experiment that unfortunately tells me that I still like my BK2. I say this because I own both, use both, and I know which one is better for me. I would say the same for anyone out there. Tonym is a friend, and a great guy, I know what knife he would take into a bad situation, I respect him for that, not because he has bought into any hype, but because he uses the hell outta his ESEE5. It works for him and he has made his choice.

I hate to see those 2 knives get damaged, but like I said, I have come very close, many times to doing the ver same thing that just occured in this vid, for no other reason that, "What would happen?" Now, I don't have to, because you did, and what happened, is exactly what I thought would happen.

Let me know if you get those measurements, I would really like to know what the thickness is at the top of each notch.

I knew I was forgetting to ask something. I am interested in that as well.

Good call.

Great video man. I think tests like this are great. It's funny how people talk about the price difference when the becker would be the same price or more if it came with a sheath that wasn't chinese garbage and micarta scales. I have used my 6 and bk7 side by side for months and in every area the 6 dominated or I would be using the bk7.

Hell of a vid, but you arent done. One NEEDS to be in pieces to have an honest to god winner.

I see no winner in this and honestly didn't expect to see one. It's a matter of physics. And while we would nromally call people stupid, dumbass, etc. you made your intentions clear and posted it up without expecting anything in return. With all that said, we appreciate the video, it was fun. Now, email me your shipping address so we can replace your ESEE-5 ;) Seriously.

Also, ESEE is pronounced "S" "E"

Jeff you are nuts man jesus give me an address so we can replace it. :D Put this on the Becker forum and see if you get a new bk-2. No hits on anyone personally this is business and that right there is where the esee 5 really wipes the floor with the competition. It's a hard, hard, cold world for the competition.

That's what I was expecting to see, one knife cutting the other in half.

To the death! Till one or the other is driven all the way through, is broken, or is deemed completely unusable.

The video reminded me of the knife destruction test weirdo guys that broke a -4 by standing on it. You just cringe through the whole thing. But very entertaining! Thanks for the test.

Very cool of R.A.T. to offer a replacement. But if it was me, I don't know if i could take it.

Its America so you should be able to do anything with your property that you see fit, you just shouldn’t be able to post that stupidity all over the web.

Thank you for your kind offer of replacement. I bought that ESEE 5 with the sole intention of conducting this test. My test, my dime.

I'm thrilled with the knife, result, company and your generosity, but I must decline. Thank you though very much.
