Batoning SR101

No inner tube here! Longer thicker handle makes a HUGE difference!
This wasn't too hard to do but if I did it again I would make the middle part rings of horsemat stall to absorb shock better - this is fine but every now and then you can feel an off blow, especially through the pommel. Also SR101 is NOT as tough as 3V, this edge gets pretty beat up but to be fair I use it for root work so it comes into contact with stones. The second pic shows it after some more sanding, I never have gotten it really pretty but it works!

Super cool man, nice work!

I had a bg ash1 and the first time I Batonned with it, I chipped it out quite a bit. Had to take it to rivers edge cutlery to fix. But then again, the rat 9 I had did NOT chip at all. Wish I kept that thing.

I’ve chipped 3v too. But no way I would ever consider 51200 better than 3V. From what I understand it is much cheaper and I can see a perspective that it’s better $ for $.

But i will admit, if you gave me 5 knives and they all had different steels, I doubt I could tell you what each knife was made of.

They have said that at some point, as did I when I first dabbled in cpm3V and was sorely disappointed at that time.
But they have not tested 3V done by a great heat treater. No comparison of 3V done by someone that knows heat treat has been done with SR101. Just like if you take 52100 done by someone who is not so good at HT, it may get outperformed by someone who knows how to HT 1080 steel. Take a carothers 3V blade and then compare it to an SR101 blade. I can tell you that 3V done by Nathan doesn't chip out like I have seen in the past with 3V. I would be very interested in seeing Busse HT a piece of cpm3V and compare that to SR101. It could be that their performance is close, but SR101 is the better value. But we don't know. There is no published test anywhere.

Do you think that A2 done by Bark River matches A2 done by Busse? Good quality steel is just part of the story, just like blade design is. HT is the major part of that story. I would take Busse's A2 over almost any other companies knife with any steel.
any idea how bark rivers 3v is?

While we are discussing steels...

I thought the thing that made INFI so amazing was the nitrogen, although I guess the rumors say that as of around 2002 it no longer contains any? Perhaps this is a result of Cobalt’s tests. Has any of this ever been discussed in particular detail? If so, I can’t find it in the search. If not, well... ;)

Google it there's at least one technical article.

As for INFI boss man has said however it's made today is due to evolution in his metallurgy prowess and is the best formula in existence whenever it's made.

IMG_3411.JPGHey CD!
Cool blade!
I just bought a DT BM from a great guy Gruntmedik!!
Brother Brown had a Sheath ready too!

But it'll probably go on display, I hate to rub the camo coating off...
I usually do use all my gear...
But for this hunting trip, I'm breaking out the TGBG...

Have a good one CD. & all y'all!

I've read the same thing somewhere too.

I'll bet that one, like about all Busse and Kin, has great ergos...seems like it would feel great in the hand.
