Hey MacLaren1!
They do feel great...
I like the dual Talons, feels like it's
part of your hand...
The guard is reassuring...

Tho, total disclosure, all I've cut with
it is air.

I do like knives with the pommel style that keeps it in your hand...
I also love the Battle Shark...
The coffin handle & dual guard speaks to me!

I'll bet that one, like about all Busse and Kin, has great ergos...seems like it would feel great in the hand.
The most comfortable Busse/Kin handle I've held. The sharp edges on the rear talon can be a bear on the ol' pinky finger, when chopping though. This one really would have benefited from a factory melt down applied to the talons and pommel. I went ahead and did mine myself. Made a huge difference.

Wow. I'll bet so. Awesome you did that....

While we are discussing steels...

I thought the thing that made INFI so amazing was the nitrogen, although I guess the rumors say that as of around 2002 it no longer contains any? Perhaps this is a result of Cobalt’s tests. Has any of this ever been discussed in particular detail? If so, I can’t find it in the search. If not, well... ;)

So INFI may indeed still have nitrogen. The problem is that spectral analyzers cannot detect low mass elements like Nitrogen and Carbon. Thus my tests did not show it. That does not mean it is not there. Only Busse could confirm either way the existence of Nitrogen in the steel of today. We know for fact that the original run had it, but after that we would need to be told that it does. An actual chemical test of the material would tell, but you would have to sacrifice a piece of steel to do so.

How big a piece? Find that guy whose buddy broke the tip off, the lawn mower guy or the Hawaiian nail in the tree guy.

Love me some DTBM, or in my case "STBM"
:confused:o_O:D

These two gals are getting anxious to meet Mistress #3 in a few weeks. BG FBMs are dinging!

Nice, I thought about getting rear of the rear talon on mine as well.

My Carothers field knife chipped out pretty good while cutting up a doe last year. Chopped through the pelvis and the edge chipped out in several places and rolled in several more. I stropped it to bring most of it back and broke out the belts to give it its edge back. There's only one spot that I didn't get completely out but it'll work. I have quartered almost as many pigs with it as my MSe this year.

On a side note I cleaned my sons buck the next day with my Mean Street Ergo and the blade just needed to be washed. Still cut arm hairs after cleaning it. I normally use a hacksaw for the pelvic but with all of the knife reviews and abuse videos I thought that I would do some real world to me testing just to see if they lived up to the hype. Lesson learned is use the right tool for the job.

Nathan makes some badass comfortable knives without a doubt, but. I honestly think that my field knife ( my only Carothers so far) is a little brittle for full on "do everything". I know that there is a fine line between making a knife blade hard enough and making it brittle. I have nothing "bad" to say about my field knife. It will cut, skin and separate joints just fine but I won't chop bone with it (or any knife) anymore. I have destroyed a lot of production knives in my time and have not hesitated to use it to dress any animal.

Interesting info. Good feedback for sure. Some questions.
So what is the field knife made of? 3V? or something else. Is it the new HT or something else? Did you talk to Carothers and what did he say? Do you know what the Rc is of that knife? I know he has experimented with some very high Rc's.

Edited to add: I just looked it up and yeah, it is an Rc of 61-62. Cpm-3V does not typically like to go above 59 but maybe on a small knife it makes sense,

View attachment 801071Hey CD!
Cool blade!
I just bought a DT BM from a great guy Gruntmedik!!
Brother Brown had a Sheath ready too!

But it'll probably go on display, I hate to rub the camo coating off...
I usually do use all my gear...
But for this hunting trip, I'm breaking out the TGBG...

Have a good one CD. & all y'all!
I hate I let mine go, at the time 8 didn’t like the color & pinky bite (grab bag). Felt great in the hand and could have modded the back talon.

I think you're going to luv the even more once you really use it. Good luck 9n the hunt and let us know.

Good job, CD!
I think at times we forget that we can make improvements...
Like way back when I couldn't qualify for a credit card!
I remember making float bowl gaskets out of milk cartons...

The factory melt down looks like the "bar of soap" example of how
a pistol should feel after it's dehorned...
And I'm sure I would just be wasting belts should I try dehorn
one of my knives... I don't have the knack for precision work...

My dehorn job is nowhere near as pronounced as Busse's awesome melt down treatment but just knocking off the hard edges made a huge difference. A NM DTBM would be epic. 2017-11-20 21.32.16.jpg

Howdy CD!
Is that the factory NM, or your time & effort taking the edges off?
Looks expertly done to me!

Thanks F'lar!
I appreciate the "good luck"!
I hope to have some pictures to show!
And break in my TG BG, maybe my Battle Shark!
Thanks again!!

That's just me. The steel is so abrasion resistant that I think it would actually be hard to mess up. Takes a lot of doing to make even a little bit of that SR101 dissapear. Lol!

I need to get a Battle Shark, I passed on it thinking I wouldn't like coffin style handle but then I got the chance to swing a Pork Chop. I was very pleasantly surprised at how comfortable and natural it felt. I've been looking ever since.

That is a great idea. I might have to do that to mine. Any pics of the whole knife?
I have some from when I first stripped it and sanded out the grinder gremlin marks, but then I did a mustard tigerstripe patina on it. I got tired of that look and I've sanded it out and done more dehorn work (what you saw in the other photos) since then but I can get some new pics when I get home from work if you want. Since my hand rides further back when chopping I only did the rear talon and pommel. But anyway, here's what I have on hand at the moment.
