Battle of the Bladesmiths

Burt

We took that picture togeather in good sport, as comrads, and now this...

You had better gird up yourself.

That propaganda you use against me has set the furious, fickle wheel of fate in motion.

You tremble as that day approches foul BEAST!!!!!!!!!

Bill,
I'm looking forward to it....shaping up to be great fun,
and an excellent primer.

While the conversation has certainly been entertaining to this point, I was hoping for some ideas or comments on how to best handle the competition. Once we settle on the type of steel, how much should the competitors be given? Should it be flat bar, round or square stock? Do we want the emphasis on forging or grinding? Also, should there be any tests to check heat treat? Alot to think about in the planning for this event.

I'd say the biggest smiths should be required to forge
the largest stock.....;-)

Actually, flat stock would be best. Two hours isn't alot of time,
and HT, grinding, and F&F handle material will require time as well.

HT testing should be done in-process, but performance testing
should be outside the two hour framework.

Since HT will be done in the forge (?), the steel used should be able
to bennefit from a minimal soak at temp prior to quench, and short
tempers.

Knife type.....camp knives are the most fun to test..

Thanks Russ. Thats just the kind of stuff Im looking for. I don't know if we should limit the style knife though. Any testing done would certainly be after the two hour period. And starting with flat stock would allow more creative time.

How about letting the performance test suggest
the size/type of knife each one makes..?

Jason,

I know that Burt doesn't like to talk about this, but he had a very brief stint in man-on-man porn/"gay wrestling" before he got married, and if you need some of the covers of his thoroughly disgusting "back catalog" let me know, and I'll dig them up for you.

For the record, these were provided to me by a homosexual co-worker who had heard me mention Burt Foster in the past...allthough Burt was going by the "working" name of Blaze Fudgepacker back in those days.:D

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

You guys are having way too much fun! I'd love to see this clash of the Forging Titans!:DLin

Hey, Burt and Jason,

Your old buddy Jimmy Chin said that he would like to go, too. And he said get you guy's butts ready. He is going to kick them with his shadowless foot.
Just kidding.:) He envies you guys that have such a good time and hopes to see you soon.:D

As a spectator I think that is a great idea, and I certainly think there should be some test of performance.

did this all start out with Blaze's job as an extra for Rocky Horror?:D

There are a lot of people interested in coming to the hammer-in to see something fun. Let's try to keep this thread "G" rated for the sake of everyone.

I agree, I don't think we should make you the butt of any more jokes.

:)

Russ and North,
What kind of cutting tests? The normal 2X4 and/or rope? We would have to do it after the two hour period, but before voting.

If we follow the 2-hour contest with a traditional cutting competition, we will limit the knives made to big chopping camp-type knives.

If we just do some simple tests of edge retention or things like that, then participants will have the freedom to make a larger variety of knives. This might be good because one guy might want to make a smaller knife but with more finish, where another might make a bigger knife with less fit and finish.

It might just keep it more interesting to not limit the knives to camp knives only....

2x4 and Rope

C'mon Wiggins, I KNOW you can get more imaginative than that

super thin onion slice
rice paper hung vertically
1 gallon tin can slicing
Matchstick set in a small hole (cut horizontally, NOT diagonal)
"Sharpen" a standing pencil

make it a CHALLENGE

If the "Battle fo the Bladesmiths" is to be different, the focus should
be on the timed making of the knife. The cutting/chopping should be
viewed as a part of the overall....a test to demonstrate that the HT
and edge were well done, but probably should not be competitave in
it's own right.

Since we're not supposed to know what we'll be making, in advance,
it's hard to say how we should test the blades...;-)...but if choppers,
then 2x4s or something similar......and please don't slip in one made of
Osage Orange........
