Battle of the Bladesmiths

that's it I'm rootin for the short guy.

the shortest one

Because a lot og guys don't know Jim Rodebaugh, I thought I'd share a picture he and I took last time we were together. Jim have a special bond, and he looks up to me almost as a father figure. And I love hobbits....

Surely you can get another competitor. Maybe you could see if Nick Wheeler remembers how to make a knife. Josh Smith would be a good one too...then he could defend at his hammer-in

Burt,
Did ya ever think that Jim is'nt short...your just freakishly tall?

Maybe I shouldn't say anything...looks like your getting very good with photoshop!;)
Mace

Alright, someone has to jump in here and defend Jimmy....he is no longer the shortest MS in the ABS. Just here in the states. I'm almost certain he is taller than Jimmy Chin.

Napolean was short. Robert Redford too.

He is taller than Jimmy Chin. I dont have to worry about him kicking my butt...
He cant kick that high.

From being around Bill Wiggins I’ve had to endure my share of juvenile short jokes, but Burt and Jason you also? I had originally planned to sell my vote for the winner of the Battle of the Bladesmiths to the highest bidder, but now the bidding is only open to those smiths whose height is near my own modest vertical measurement.

Bill

Jason
Burt
Russ

Three of the very best makers Period!

Perhaps Dandy Don Hanson and Nick "fast hands" Wheeler will round out the field.

We can hope.

We don't have a web page for this event up. The new ABS website should be up sometime in early January. We will have all the info for the hammerin there.
Jason Knight will be doing forging, grinding and heat treating. Terry Vandeventer will be doing handles and gaurds. Len Landrum will be doing Damascus. We will be having a full blown hammer-in in addition to The Battle of The Bladesmiths.

We are working on a couple other things, and hope to be able to make some more announcments next week. We are working hard to make this hammer-in as good as we can, with something for everyone.

When we started telling folks about this event, Burt and Jason had already agreed to it. Russ Andrews and Jim Rodebaugh were the next two Master Smiths to pony-up and say they wanted to compete. One of these four will earn the title- "ABS Iron Bladesmith". It will be interesting to see who decides to challenge for the title the following year!!

Mr. North, your last post does not surprise me. You are always looking for what YOU can get out of something. Not to hurt your "little feelings", but I am not sure you will get a vote. Are you tall enough to see over the anvils? How could you vote when you can't see whats going on? Maybe we should think about a vertically challenged viewing area...:):):)

Little Jimmy is getting ready to rumble. I spoke with him this morning and he is planning on slaying some ogres come March. I suspect that finesse and actual skill might be part of his planning... He wanted the other competitors to know that their usual "fumbling" a "modified thick edge" on a "boat oar" wasn't going to win the prize. I suspect that this is highly technical bladesmith lingo we mere mortals are not destined to know... but it sounds like smack talk to me.

This is priceless. It'd also be funnier it they weren't describing my own knives, though...;)

I do have some incentive for the competitors, though: If Jim doesn't win, the other two that don't win will have to try and sleep in the same room with him while he explains his latest bow hunt and his plans for Alaska. For good measure, he will be given a few glasses of good scotch just prior to bedtime.

Honestly, I wish I could be there...this ought to be a fun one.

Ok, I'm officially going to be there. Now, I just have to find some decent hotel close by. Where the heck are all the people staying for this event? Doesn't appear to be many quality hotels in Clyde, so maybe Asheville?

I wqas just looking into this last night, here's what Bill said a while back in another thread:

"The Lodge in Waynesville has the best rates. 45.00 per night."

I'm bringing my wife, she didn't like the idea of 45/night  So she looked into the Biltmore Castle. It's only 200-500 per night, crap... :D

If you guys know any more info, I'm anxious to get some reservations too
