Battle of the Bladesmiths

I think Burts on the right track. We don't want to limit the knives to just choppers. I just want to do something to show the knives are properly heat treated and edge geometry is good as well. And don't worry Russ, I only have 3 or 4 osage boards laying around!! lol

What about letting each participant decide what they want to cut to prove the cutting ability of their knife?

I think the edge test should be brief, simple, and secret
till we step up to the anvil...(only the "battle" administrator should
know)...

Who dares to be the FOURTH part of this few, this band of brothers!!!!!

Jason Knight quoting Shakespeare? Somebody pinch me already. :p

This is going to be super-cool.

And what is to become of the knives produced by the brave combatants?

Roger

You would have a better chance of obtaining those knives if you show up at the hammer in. This IS THE HAMMER-IN to go to.

"The art of [forging] is of vital importance to the [bladesmith]. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected." -butchered from Sun Tzu, the Art of War

This should be interesting!
Since I will be stuck in Iraq still I'm going to have to ask that someone posts pictures for me.

This sounds really interesting. Will this be a cage match sort of event?

Whatever you bring in a 5 gallon bucket gets into the ring. Four bladesmiths enter.....one leaves. The fourth has yet to be determined.....

This does sound like the Hammer in to attend! If nothing else to witness the talent and some of the most interesting people you may ever meet!

Let's see, Burt Foster and Bill Wiggins were my instructors at the Haywood "Intro" course, Jason Knight, Jimmy Chin & Ron Boydston stopped by to lend support and share knowledge. And I would count myself lucky to get to meet Russ Andrews, Mace Vitale & Stephan Fowler just to mention a few!

Sounds like the place to be! I'll have to make it my business to be there!

Thanks to those involved for the hard work to make this happen and the sharing of knowledge!

Besides the huge talent the sense of humor is equal! I hope I can attend!

I would love to see this in person. My 2 favourite makers.

I really hope to see some footage of this.

Same thoughts here.

What an event, great idea. Very fun thread to read BTW.
I do wish there will be a huge footage of this "battle".

I heard from a source that is occasionally reliable that James Rodebaugh will be the fourth competitor in the Battle of the Bladesmiths. Coming all the way from Wyoming he is. There is going to be some stiff competition in this contest.

Bill

I will confirm the rumors. Jim Rodebaugh will be our fourth competitor in The battle Of The Bladesmiths. Jim was very excited and wanted to compete when he first heard of the event. He just had to work out travel plans. Jim will be travelling 2000 miles to compete. He also said he was coming to win!!

This will set the field of competitors. Not only do we have 4 master bladesmiths competing, but all 4 are full time knifemakers. I'm getting excited..

Bill, since you are in charge of nailing down the rules, will we be allowed only one five-gallon bucket or will some guys be allowed two? I don't want to give anyone an unfair advantage, but if Rodebaugh doesn't have at least one bucket to stand on, it will be kinda sad to watch.

:D:D:D

It's on Jimmy! Actually this won't be any fun if Jim has to mail his comebacks to Jason for him to type in, since I don't think computers have made it to that part of Wyoming yet.

Burt, you raise a valid point. I told Jim we would build him a platform to work off of. Actually two as he will need to be able to reach the grinder and anvil. Of course, both will have to be approved by the safety officer.

BTW Burt, the safety officer said something to the effect of looking foward to seeing you in the time out chair!!

I will bring the Foster saftey bucket. This is a special device with two eye holes that Burt can see out and no one has to see him.
