Be Honest... Would you pay $625 for this knife?

P.S. Mods, before you issue me a red-card (which I'll gladly accept for telling this blowhard internet liar what I think of his stories), I ask that you go back through Boris' posts and look at AAALLLLL the times he's made these snide insinuations essentially insulting everyone on this board over liking expensive knives, his constant inferences like "Well, MY knives do ACTUAL work, unlike all the other people on this board!", and his spewing bad information in threads made by new users looking for information like "Meh, you don't need that expensive Spyderco/ZT/etc. Get you a 1095 Schrade, or an 8cr13Mov knife, it's all you need, and better than any so-called supersteel!"

Seriously, I don't understand why these constant snarky remarks have been tolerated.

Lol

What do you do with your knives? You have a passion about you that tells me you must use them and have a lot of experience with 80crv2 and 1095. So instead of posting what you have. Tell everyone your experiences. That's how you look like you know something. You just can't tell me I'm wrong because you say so. Don't work that way.

Boris, you ARE wrong, and you're a liar. You seem to keep purposefully missing it, so I'll ask you again. Your 80CRV2 knife you claimed that wasn't as good as your 1095 Schrade. Where are the pics? What are the details even? What knife is it? Who makes it? What blade shape does it have, what grind is on it? What was the testing media? Over what timeframe? Where are pics? Show us some FACTS. This "Well, it's MY experience that..." doesn't mean anything. Sorry. And for some reason, you keep trying to turn this around on me (same as you did Mr. Winkler), you can't refuse to answer a question, and then demand an answer to that same question from the people asking it. That's not how rational debate works.

If you can't show us pics or give details, then no one here cares what you keep spouting, you ARE wrong, and you're a liar. 1095 being a better steel is only in your head, and I maintain that you've never even so much as been in the same room as a knife with 80CRV2, much less held or used one. I personally think it's like all your other stories you've spewed on this board. One of my especial favorites was where you were claiming that 8Cr13Mov is a better steel at edge-holding than S30V.

Let me get the popcorn, TELL US ANOTHER TALE GRAMPA!

This will be my last post in this thread because lying internet trolls irritate me, and at this point, just aren't worth another second of my time. Good luck, Boris.

I told Mr Winkler in my response to him. He is being civil so I answered him. I don't have to tell anyone anything who chooses to take the low road, so many of them (requests) are ignored.

Go back and read it if you need to know so bad.

You crack me up, man. If you ever find your way up North, lemme know. I'll buy you a beer. :very_drunk:

@Boris: At this point; I think we all want to see some pictures of your fabled knife.

The irony as Mr. Winkler pointed out is that the steel type is not even close to being the end all be all in regards to overall performance.

That sounds good but what are you trying to say? If you drive down the same road every day and there is a dip in the road closest to the shoulder of the road and you hit it everyday and it rattles your teeth, are you going to keep hitting it everyday and just go to the dentist, or are you going to move over in your lane and miss the dip? Experience tells you your teeth won't rattle if you go around it. Should that experience be trusted? I have such a dip down the road from me and I miss it every time, because my experience tells me missing it doesn't slam the suspension on my truck.

Your science (steel charts) does not match my experiences. If you lack the same ones I have you wont notice and default back to your charts. We all know you get honey from a bee hive, but you can't just walk up to it and take it out without getting stung a few times. Same applies with experience with different steels, and here is the part all of you get so hurt feelings over, in my experience.

Your science don't match up to what I have witnessed with them steels in my hand. I'm not talking about what you (don't) do with your knives, I'm talking about my activities in the woods and what I've noticed over the years. Yes, 1095 does better on hard woods. If that hurts your feelings then by all means buy every 80crv2 blade you can and take it after a stack of hard woods. It only matters what you enjoy. I enjoy doing my hobbies with steel that holds an edge longer, that's it, get over it.

This is like an Andy Kaufmann thing, right? Internet performance art using some backwoods caricature to annoy knife-aficionados? Or something like that? It's kind of abstract, but I think I'm starting to get the joke... no, I lost it.;)

I'll leave it to someone from the US to order the knife, but just send me a PM with your Paypal address, and I'll send the money.

So the wood is of the same density? And the knives have the same grinds? The blades are treated to the same RC hardness? Same thickness behind the edge? Same stock thickness? Steel grain running the same direction? If any of these variables are significantly different your experience with the 'steel' is meaningless. Controlled testing is always, always required. I'm actually with you in that I think under most conditions 1095 should exhibit better wear resistance than 80crv2, though even then it will really only matter with optimal hardness which your Schrade simply does not have. The problem is that you assume your experience trumps everything and it simply doesn't. I'll tell you right now that, for my everyday uses, the edge on 1095 will completely crap out before I get through the morning most days. I cut lots of cardboard and 1095 simply does not have the carbide content or abrasion resistance to deal with much of that even with an optimal heat treat and geometry. These days I won't look terribly seriously at anything that won't hold an edge at least as well as D2.

All true, but you do realize Schrade hardens their 1095 at 57-59 HRC. Esee is a solid 57 and everyone else is lower. Of every 1095 blade I've ever had this SCHF37 by far has the hardest heat treat for 1095 and it shows in edge retention. The only way you learn that is by getting out and actually using them. I thought the higher HRC would be bad but it survived borderline abusive testing before it went in my rotation. Toughness is unaffected by its higher HRC, might have something to do with its thickness, don't really care. The darn thing can handle anything I require of it. So it earned its spot in my kit. I didn't just add it to the rotation because it has some snazzy name or because it's made by a popular brand. If that were my goal I'd get an Esee.

For the haters, here is the chart Schrade sent me when I asked what HRC they treat their steels to.

Are you going to chip in the last $5 so that the rest of us can purchase your famed knife to be put up to the test?
Time for you to put your money where your mouth is Boris. Or can you not trust someone with a whopping $5?

You squirmed your way out of the challenge, tried to reset the terms to some idiocy that you invented. This is simple.
Are you willing to donate $5 to seeing your knife "win" the challenge and will you accept the results afterward?

That's a knee slapped right there. I already invested full retail in one, I don't need to donate $5.00, I already know how it performs.

I have not yet reached a point of laziness where I need someone else to test my gear for me, or rely on youtube for my knowledge base.

How about you donate $625.00 to send me the camp knife. I'll send it to you in 4-6 weeks when I'm done testing it.

Just as I thought. I now deem all of your tales as completely hollow. Have fun with your chinamart knife. ZERO credibility, ZERO follow through.

I registered here several days ago before I saw this thread. Wanted to get that out of the way before someone accuses me of just registering for this thread.
I really wanted to post, on other subjects, and be a part of this forum. But after seeing the outright rude and child like behavior by supposedly grown men I will not be posting again anytime soon.
The ganging up of "men" on Boris is pathetic. None of you have posted anything of importance to the discussion at hand and have not refuted one thing Boris has said. And I am not even saying that he is right or wrong. I don't know. I do know that many of you are posting and threatening but have no clue what you are talking about.
And Mr. Winkler, I wouldn't pay you $100 for that knife. I don't care how proud you are of it. But if you can sell them then more power to you. I would never begrudge someone getting paid what the market allows.
Have fun in the kiddie pool children.

Science = steel charts. That says it all right there. You don't have a clue what Insipid is talking about when he mentions science.

Mods, look at the post from quiet. He makes a valid point. In almost every thread he gets deeply involved in he belittles and insults everyone. Now he is taking it to a well respected maker? I don't know why this is being put up with. The rest of us don't want to go as far as he does because we care about this community and want to continue to be part of it. Can we say the same for Boris? Nope.

Anyway, I'm done with responding to this poor little man. We actually have something good going in this thread, the challenge set forth by Mr. Winkler. And I am fairly sure the good members in this thread have raised the funds to go through with it. Hopefully the thread won't get so derailed by Moose and squirrel guy that this challenge gets lost.

So cranky. Moral of the story, don't solicite money from me where I get nothing in return. You expect me to buy credibility from you through small scale extortion. As if you would claim to all I am credible if I caved to your demand and gave you $5.00. You are such a ray of sunshine.

So what's your personal experience with 80crv2, more specific the knife linked in the OP. If there is none there than your empty chatter is just that, empty.

Small scale extortion!!! Oh . Mah . Gawd .
Serenity now!!!!!!
If anybody really wants to do this test we can get together and get it done. Hell, I don't even care where the knife goes after the test. I sincerely hope it's in a million tiny pieces actually.
So, who wants to be the job foreman and oversee the special project? The second somebody volunteers to collect the money I'll send my part. I've got my finger on the paypal trigger!

Well hello Boris.
If you are NOT Boris, I suggest you do some research on his modus operandi before you come in here all in a tizzy.

But I can tell you are an insecure child who has to be part of a gang to feel strong.
Goodbye

The humor is no one needs to donate anything. I've already invested all the money fully myself. I've already told y'all how well it does.

Here is a photoshopped picture of the blade wear.

This is from about a month ago, so the wear has spread since then, maybe I need to touch it up in Photoshop again. If anyone has specific questions I can answer them for you. Since it looks like no one is actually going to follow through on donating.

As I stated in an earlier post in this thread, I did am not in the market for a camp knife and I didn't happen to like the sheath on that one. Thus I don't own it.
I do have a small collection of Mr. Winkler's steel for personal use so I do have a little more experience in this matter than you do, which is none by the way.

Um.. here's a pic of a couple that I decided not to keep. Again, have fun with your chinamart knife, I'm quite done with your silliness Boris. Good day!

LMAO, yep that's me.
Bye Boris.
If you decide to stick around and participate you will see that by and large we are mostly reasonable gentlemen who like to discuss knives. If you do decide to stick around, I bid you welcome. Kick your shoes off, sit a spell, read lots, post when you can.
