Be Honest... Would you pay $625 for this knife?

True. To me, it sort of starts to come off as a passive judgement towards those who would buy this knife.

Certainly. There is judgement present in some folks making each of those three statements. But whatever. De gustibus.

The only one I objected to was the one I replied to earlier, where the claim was made that the knife was not worth $600 because it was not the work of a well-known master...which is just untrue.

Nothing wrong with spending the money on it if that's what you like and you have the money. But it's not for me. I've used too many knives from $13-$100 that perform better than knives $200+ to pay $650 on a knife. Maybe in 30 years when inflation catches up to the $650 mark I'll have to change my answer. ;)

From what I hear Daniel Winkler makes great stuff and is known within the SF communities. You're also paying for his name.

If I was in the market for the WKII Camp Knife I would also consider the Chris Reeve Impofu with a 10" CPM-3V full-tang blade that's 0.27" thick. A little bit lighter, only 500 made and goes for $600.

This thread seems to have degenerated into a series of "Well, I'd never pay..." as though that's some huge slam on Winkler's work.

I personally wouldn't pay that much for a knife, and it has nothing to do with the product. I don't have the discernment to tell the difference between a $200 knife and a $2,000 knife. I know that there's those out there that can tell the difference, but I'm not one of those people. I'm glad that there's makers out there that cater to that crowd, and others that cater to my tastes. I don't understand getting upset that somebody out there is making a knife for a price that you don't like, but I also don't understand getting upset that somebody doesn't want to buy that knife. I also have no interest in buying a $600 bottle of wine that does the same job as the wine that comes in the box. It doesn't mean that no wine is worth $600, it means that good wine is wasted on me. The same holds true with knives. I think anything made by Mr. Winkler or Mr. Reeve would be wasted on me. I mean no offense in making that statement.

No offense taken. I think you have a reasonable view on the topic at hand. After all, you're right, super expensive high-end versions of normal items aren't for everyone. Like you, I wouldn't pay $600 for a bottle of wine, because I'm not a wine guy. But I recognize in solidarity through those hobbies I DO spend a lot of money on (like craft beer) that that price probably has multiple factors figuring into it. Of course, I wouldn't go onto a forum for wine enthusiasts and say "Meh, totally not worth that!" either. In any case, I just watched a video on the knife at hand and it seems to be pretty neat. I am all full up on choppers, and given that I already have a customized Swamp Rat Rodent 9, I don't know that I'd get any additonal functionality out of this WKII Chopper to make it worth buying. I'm glad that DW is making products that his fans enjoy, however.

Most people wouldn't pay $10,000 for a Randall either. Price is not an indicator of functionality. You could make the same argument with Ferrari, Rolex, or any number of other products.

I would have no problem paying that much for a knife, if it is a knife that appeals to me enough to spend that much. However, this knife does not appeal to me at all. So, I guess my answer is no, I would not pay that much for this particular knife.

Wait just one second. I thought if you wouldnt spend that much on something that automatically meant you cant afford it? ;). Just razzing you.

LOL I don't necessarily think that, although I've certainly seen that sort of logic used before in this and other hobbies (such as the car world) often enough. I have seen plenty of 16 year olds with $800 5.0 notchbacks come in on various Mustang boards to trash talk the new Stangs like "What crap!!!! They're worthless! My super cheap car I bought for $XXX is better!". It just comes off as SUUUUPER ring-sting at that point, in my eyes. But here, kinda different. Don't want to spend nearly $700 on this thing, I can't blame you. It's not for everyone, that's for sure.

Next Wednesday at 4:00PM by my calculations. ;)

It was for me also, brother. More amusing, I figured it was you almost immediately. Like me, you have a fairly distinct typing style. LOL

lol, yeah. You could say we have a signature style. Its called bigger hammer.

Hmmmm. Let's see. Should I put my own bacon on the line and be a operator or should I spend hundreds on a "Tool of the trade" so I just look "badass"? Several knife companies making a living on that decision, from BudK to Strider.

Thanks for clarifying that widely known marketing practice for us all with no real addition to the topic.

Models selling beauty products, beer being sold by "the worlds most interesting man", athletes selling underwear and muscle rub to Martha Stuart selling crafting supplies. People think that if they wear certain makeup or if haynes underwear are good enough for M.J. then they are good enough for them, same as guys who want to use military equipment. Or maybe because they feel that their purchase has been tried and tested by some of the best in their respective field of interest, I'm not sure. There is no single motivation to buying products that can be proven.

So.. Mr. Winkler still gives the best military discount in the business and as a veteran I respect and appreciate that. As mentioned, he is also a master in his craft and his products are quality. So if I wanted or needed a chopper I'd probably get on his list and wait out my time until he made me one. If I wanted the knife ASAP blade HQ has also had years worth of my business. While not rich, I live comfortably enough to splurge on a knife once in a while, so that price tag, for his work, doesn't really bother me.

GronK I'm really not certain of the tone of your post so I'll just say if you are a veteran, thank you for your service and happy independence day. If you meant it in a different way, I don't know who's going to really notice you looking "badass" in the woods using your chopper that they would probably never recognize the maker of. I just sold my Winkler Belt knife so I guess I lose my operator status, but I'll definitely be holding onto one of his other full size models for personal use.
Take care,

This threat made me think about using Tuf-cloth.

PS: at the original question: no, not at this time.

Let's do CRK and Busse next; they're overpriced.

Yup, Busse is like Rolex. You think you are paying a lot to get into one and then you sell it and realize you just got your money back plus some extra cash. I guaranty nothing you own will give you that return except maybe Randall.

But Overpriced is a tenuous term. You can buy a $100 knife that is overpriced junk. Take Ontario for example. I have seen many broke Ontarios and then many who had satisfied customers. I would not stake my life on inconsistency.
