For those of you looking for a gift for the dog who has everything, just found this on fleabay. If I had a dog, it would DEFINITELY b getting one of these for Christmas:

One of the guys I work with has a golden that wears a rig like that. The dog is his service dog but it carries so much gear it's pretty funny. Funny thing is at work. For 150 employees, we have 21 service animals.

That dog setup is cool Mike. If I got that for Becker we would have to fill the pouches with treats and toys. Then try to strap a stick bigger than he is to it because he has to have one that is at least 3 feet long, sometimes up to 10 feet long. Lol

Anyone hear from Dex lately? Sent him an email somewhere last week...

Yessir, I have talked with him on the phone... And received a box from him early this week.

But that may be an expensive phone call for you...

I'm waiting on several more knives to be delivered to him, so he can ship to me, but if I speak with him again before you, I'll let him know your trying to reach him.

Thinking about getting a few chickens... 4-6. We easily go through 4-6 eggs a day... And would eat more if they were free lol.

I have the space, just never raised chickens, or built a coop.... So I have a bunch of reading to do...

Lots of people around here keep chickens.. I can hear them all the time, sometimes one or 2 make their way to my yard... Seem like they are easy to take care of... If you can keep them in a good secure coop.....

Wife likes the idea too...

So, for you guys that raise chickens.... What's the down side? The negatives on raising chickens for eggs ?

No problem bro, I ordered 5 bk11s.... So I'm thinking he can do it lol.

He goes straight through KA-BAR, so I'd guess any you wanted he could get...

Pretty cool my phones autocorrect knows the name KA-BAR.

Neko got a squirrel for breakfast this morning.... Little fluff ball didn't even ask if I wanted some... Stingy dog lol

He is the most badass small dog ever! We had 3 wasp in the house last week... I killed one, Neko killed one, and injured the 3rd so it couldn't fly and I could stomp it.. He chased a bee away from my daughter another time... He is awesome.

The major negative with any sort of livestock is that you are commited to daily care, so your ability to drop everything and travel disappears. You can still travel, but you'll have to arrange for someone to let them in and out of the coop and handle feed and water.

You also need to consider whether you'll free-range, confine them, or a combination. We have an 8'X10' shed that we use for a coop and a triangular fenced area as a "run". The run is about 49' by 39' and then the hypotenuse of the triangle...which makes it about 955 square feet. It is fenced with chain link with chicken wire hutch-clipped to the bottom 3 feet of the chain link. I also added 1-1/8' bird netting to cover it and the net is hog-ringed to the fence to make it nearly impregnable. It only took a month for the chickens to completely defoliate the run area...probably better than Agent Orange (or Roundup). If we could have kept the Vietnamese from eating them, we'd have been better off dropping chickens in the jungle. :D My wife lets them free-range the rest of the backyard for an hour or so each night, but that's it so that they don't consume all the grass back there.

We've not had predator problems thanks to the fencing, but you might plan for an extra one or two just in case. My wife had a friend from work buy 6 fully-grown hens (we bought day old chicks) who started laying the day after she picked them up. The next day, her dog killed 3 of them and the other 3 just disappeared. For the $120 spent, I think she got 3 eggs. Day old chicks run between $3-5 here, $20 or so for 5-6 month olds ready to lay.

They do start laying less often as the days get shorter unless you add a light in the coop to stimulate them for several extra hours each day. We're getting an average of 6-7 eggs a day from 13 hens. You might also factor that into your planning.

There is a ton of info on backyard chickens on the interwebz, so enjoy your research!

Nice chopper.

Saw a BK77 on the exchange today too, out of my price range heh.

I have a feeder that easily holds a 50lb bag of scratch or mash that I made out of a 20gallon bucket, another bucket has chicken nipples on the bottom. This will feed and water them for a week. I have 7 hens and a rooster. There's lots of things you can do to feed and water them while your gone so its really no issue.
Multiple waterers and a trough of scratch or something, they're pretty hardy...if theyre not then they'll die leaving you with just the sturdy birds.

I confess, our chickens are spoiled. My wife dotes on them. She makes 3 bowls of snacks every night just before dark. Rice, pasta, oatmeal, fermented grains, tortillas cut into strips, shredded cabbage, sliced cucumbers, sliced baked sweet potatoes, etc. Depends on what we pick up at the store or what we have as leftovers. Usually one veggie and one carb. Sometimes she drizzles on a little olive oil and herbs.... This is in addition to the Layena and water.
