The major negative with any sort of livestock is that you are commited to daily care, so your ability to drop everything and travel disappears. You can still travel, but you'll have to arrange for someone to let them in and out of the coop and handle feed and water.
You also need to consider whether you'll free-range, confine them, or a combination. We have an 8'X10' shed that we use for a coop and a triangular fenced area as a "run". The run is about 49' by 39' and then the hypotenuse of the triangle...which makes it about 955 square feet. It is fenced with chain link with chicken wire hutch-clipped to the bottom 3 feet of the chain link. I also added 1-1/8' bird netting to cover it and the net is hog-ringed to the fence to make it nearly impregnable. It only took a month for the chickens to completely defoliate the run area...probably better than Agent Orange (or Roundup). If we could have kept the Vietnamese from eating them, we'd have been better off dropping chickens in the jungle. My wife lets them free-range the rest of the backyard for an hour or so each night, but that's it so that they don't consume all the grass back there.
We've not had predator problems thanks to the fencing, but you might plan for an extra one or two just in case. My wife had a friend from work buy 6 fully-grown hens (we bought day old chicks) who started laying the day after she picked them up. The next day, her dog killed 3 of them and the other 3 just disappeared. For the $120 spent, I think she got 3 eggs. Day old chicks run between $3-5 here, $20 or so for 5-6 month olds ready to lay.
They do start laying less often as the days get shorter unless you add a light in the coop to stimulate them for several extra hours each day. We're getting an average of 6-7 eggs a day from 13 hens. You might also factor that into your planning.
There is a ton of info on backyard chickens on the interwebz, so enjoy your research!
I have a feeder that easily holds a 50lb bag of scratch or mash that I made out of a 20gallon bucket, another bucket has chicken nipples on the bottom. This will feed and water them for a week. I have 7 hens and a rooster. There's lots of things you can do to feed and water them while your gone so its really no issue.
Multiple waterers and a trough of scratch or something, they're pretty hardy...if theyre not then they'll die leaving you with just the sturdy birds.
5 11s?Who are you making happy for Christmas? Lol
I need ideas what the hell I want for Christmas, haha. Sad, I know. I have a birthday coming up, and I do believe the wife is getting me an HPG Tarahumara. Score.

Was just out the back yard with the missus having a beverage. Saw am awesome opportunity to kill 8-10 blowies (flies) in one fell swoop. So I picked up my wife's thong and smashed em. Literally two minutes later, swatted half a dozen more. After a few more goes, I'd killed in an accurate approximation, roughly 30 flies. With my wifes thong. How did I manage this incredible feat? I had fly bait. Dog $#!+. My darling little wife now refuses to wear her thongs now.. hehehe..
^ was reading this and was like "how do you kill flies with, oh he's talking about sandals."
Man I love you guys! I'm in hysterics right now! It's only just occurred to me that 'thongs' to you guys are little stringy undies. Hahaha! :'D Life in the colonies..

..Im not currently proxying knives anymore but thats really only because i been lazy after my move to Florida LMAO..... That being said... for a knife like the M-18 im sure we could work something out LOL
I have sent many a knife down under for fellas that had issues getting certain blades down there, or just to help consolidate lots of blades into one or two monthly shipments..... Mostly Busse knives, expensive blades, Never had a single issue.... My fees are very reasonable too.... FREE.... You pay actual shipping charges, that is it.... The catch? Same catch i have had for years..... I get to open the box and fondle the blade. Check out the ergos and weight of it. I will not use the knife in any way unless you authorize it. But i may drool on it a little.
If there's ever an issue getting a special blade down there hit me up brother. Sharpmindz@live.com
Man, glad I wasn't the only one. Here's what I got from Springy's story the first time around:
-Wife sunbathes in the nude.
-Whilst this is happening, Springy's more concerned about killing flies.
-Wife now goes commando.
Now I REALLY need to send her flowers [emoji6]
When I was a kid thongs meant flip-flops. Then I heard someone on TV say something about a model in a thong and I wondered why he'd be excited about a girl in flip-flops..
