Bear Grylls Knife

I think they should offer a pink version. That's more of a Bear color. If you are going to the wilderness take Les Stroud. If you are going to mall of America and need a guide take Bear. For $600 you should be able to get one in pink.

Do you really think you are as good as Bear Grylls? Why don't you challenge him? Or are you just another arm chair internet macho man?

MY BM FB Griptilian in 154cm looks similiar for $100, but to each their own. Heck, it might increase in value due to it's 'collectible' nature because of his controversy. But still, $600+clams for it? that's Busse coin if you ask me, but I have no idea what RWL powder steel is.....3G by Fallkniven commands a higher price than their standard VG-10 steel so maybe RWL is a better steel than 154cm.

When I ordered mine, he said he could make it without the "bear" signature, which is fine by me, since I didn't even new who the heck bear was until I started hanging out here and found out he is mostly hated in these forums.

I seriously like the design. As for the price, well, I think it is a fair price, compare it to other custom knives out there and remember that our dollar is weak compared to their paper right now, heck, you should have seen the conversion prices when I was looking for a handmade Samurai sword in Japan. I ended up coming back empty handed.

I don't think, I know. I can beat him all day long laying around a hotel and living it easy. :D

Bear is just an actor in a remote movie studio with folks holding his hand if his stupid fake stunts get him in trouble before going back to the hotel and sipping tea and eating biscuits at the 5 star hotel he's staying at before being "tucked in" by a cameraman.

While someone said a SOG Field pup would do anything the Bear knife would I would just get a Spyderco Moran for $60, which is about what the Bear knife should sell for. You can hammer a Moran into a stump and it will not break, according to Field and Stream magazine. Now that's a real survival knife, tested by bonafide American woodsmen in the American wilderness areas.

I just think it is funny that a cool knife, well designed, hand made, from a rare steel, gets so much crap just because the guy who put his name on it, not the guy who hand-crafted it, is a douche, or a wimp, or a punk, or whatever you want to say about him. What would happen if Michael Jackson endorsed a Busse knife, say the Badger Attack, would that make the knife any less cool?

Actually, Bear is not an actor at all. He is a former SAS commando, a renowned mountain climber, and a survival expert. He does have a support crew, but his "stunts" are not faked. If he stays in a hotel some of the time, who cares? In my youth, I went through some tough training and spent a whole year in the jungle. Even in my peak of training and conditioning, I would not put my skills up against his. Actually, I think some of the things he does take unnecessary risks . He is British, so his way of speaking and mannerisms are not American. He is not some pansy in pink, though. As for the knife, I think I have covered it. Yes, a $10 Mora will do most of what his custom will do.

I own a Mora, and come this summer I will own a "Bear" knife....the universe will implode!!!!!!!!

Horn Dog, thanks for your honest review.

That is a harsh accusation. No matter what anybody says or thinks, TV is just that, TV. Besides, I thought Grylls was a "weekend warrior." He may be in slightly better shape than me, but I'll live longer since I don't do crazy, idiotic stunts that are life threatening and then go around telling people to do "that" to survive in the "wild". Bear is just a TV show host that happens to have the backdrop of the "wild" in the background.

my problems with it are that its overpriced, wayyy overpriced for what ya get, even if it does have bares name on it,

I am not endorsing any of the stunts Bear does. A lot of his survival techniques are based on worst case scenarios and are very risky, even for a young man in top physical condition. But he is what he purports to be, not a phony actor. Some of the more dangerous stunts he performs make for good TV, but are not what I or most survival instructors would recommend. Fact is, the show is popular and generated a lot of interest in his knife, so I thought a review of it might be of general interest on Blade Forums. It is fine to criticize his actions or techniques, but to accuse this accomplished outdoorsman of being a phony is a "harsh accusation". Personally, I find the information Les Stroud imparts on Survivorman to be more useful. TV is geared toward entertainment and action more than eduction in many cases and that criticism is fair.

HD,

You're a class act. Thanks for the honest review and photos. Enjoy your Bayley knife. I really like it!

LOL I haven't seen a topic since religion that gets people so riled up as bear gays I mean grylls. lol makes for entertaining reading.

It has been a surprise for just a little knife review. Who would have guessed such a reaction? The "Hotel" scandel broke after I had ordered the knife. I collect survival knives. As overpriced as it was, I thought some might be interested in a review of it. Maybe 2 or 3 people! The rest just wanted to trash Bear Grylls.

The cutout section looks like it aligns with the external cross-strap on the sheath, the leather piece with his name. So I would guess that sheath retention is it's primary purpose.

I would have guessed that also, but the Bayley knife website shows all of their knives with the handle cut the same way and none of the other sheaths have that strap there. Perhaps it helps with the grip; alligning with finger placement??? No other guesses.

It is very expensive for the look of it. A Randall Fireman Special looks pretty similar for a good bit less. There are a lot of Custom knives to be had for less that are very very good; a Bill Sanders G1 comes to mind at almost 1/3 the price.

cool knife and congratulations. I simply cannot affort it or any number of other expensive knives for that matter.

as far as Bear doing the tv show... let's remember it's TV. I couldn't care less if he slept in a hotel with blind hookers either. It is the first ever show of it's kind and we are all envious of his position. Every one of you on this forum would of done this or done that different than he but ALL would of loved to at least being a consultant on his show. His show has put on the forefront basic harsh natural realities in the face of many civvies (sheople). Just for that he deserves respect. He is ex SAS, in my book that is pretty way up there in the special forces department.

The show has captured the imagination of many; just a guy, a knife, a canteen and an active-open mind. As an audience, we should do the same instead of looking for any and all errors he makes.

it's TV... it's TV dammit. get over it.

i don't give a rat's ass where he sleeps.

one thing i truly appreciate, he has shown that you don't need a huge bowie to survive... I spent enough time in long distance hiking to know that a 4 in blade is more than enough for survival. I have never, and will never be involved in a grizzly versus man fight, and will never need to chop 4 in diameter logs ... or big hanging ropes in one swipe,

once again, congratulations on buying the knife, i know it's expensive, it has good qualities i am sure, the good thing is you bought it before loads of imitations come about.

when paying that much for a knife, and with laser etching technologies being so quick and easy: one would think that the mfr could at least number the knife, and etch the identity of the owner.

I agree with you guys about the knife, it is a great looking knife, just a bit overpriced for me. I do appreciate and watch the show regularly, and I don't question his stunts in the show (especially the elephant crap episode). His show is one the the best things to happen in bringing some viewers a bit closer to nature.

I just don't agree with calling out a fellow member on what they do for a living by accusing them of being an, "armchair internet macho man." We all love knives and the outdoors, that's why we're here, but there's nothing wrong with stating one's opinion about a TV show host who has made false claims about his shows credibility.

I'm grateful that somebody bought the knife and was generous enough to write a review about it. Hell, if I had the money I would still buy it regardless of bear's credibility. It's a great looking knife. Money to burn = stuff to buy.

I guess asking Silverdagger is if he was just another armchair internet macho man was over the top. Sorry. It isn't my purpose to defend Bear, he can do that himself. He is not a phony, though. I sure hope the next knife I review won't be so contoversial. Judging by what I've seen on this forum, it can't be a Cold Steel. I could do Les Stroud's knife, but everbody already has a Buck Special. And I just will not buy the new Rambo machete. Anybody know where I can get a Crocodile Dundee knife?

Did Peewee Herman have a knife? ;)
