Bear Grylls ultimate knife... or ultimate failure?

I honestly believe that most folks who would put themselves in a "Survival Situation": already know how to pick out a quality survival tool.
You'd be surprised by number of tourists in fliplops Croatian rescue service had to rescue from mountains. They usually have nothing but their phone and sunglasses.

Do you actually like knives, for any reason?
He only likes the ones best for tilting at windmills.

At any rate, I'm not really sure what this thread is going to prove. We all know the BG knives are overpriced garbage for what you get.

Bear does have some credentials with the SAS, but he is mostly known for having the means to do what others can't and having a show where he both stayed off site and had most of the survival aspects shown to him by experts right before they started filming.

Because all lighters use flint...
And because plastic bags or wrappings don't exist, and plastic bag is so heavy and can never be useful for anything in survival situation.

Why would anyone keep their fire making stuff dry, right?

This is exactly what you're doing entire time 😂
Oh if we are going to play “imaginary world of make believe” games where you can add to the mix whatever makes the kit better, this should really get fun.

Look, before you take it too personal, I wouldn’t buy the knife either. I don’t like it. But don’t get mad at me just because I’m not satisfied with your initial comment. If you say a knife is garbage without saying why, I’m not going to just agree with you. That would be stupid, wouldn’t it? To make decisions just because someone says something is garbage?

If they're dumb enough for that: it only proves how smart Darwin was.
You can't save everyone from their own foolishness.

So explain why it’s garbage.

How many more responses about shoddy materials and design will it take before you accept the explanation?

Cheap steel is fine with me, but this knife seems to be both soft (poor edge retention) AND it still seems to break readily (which is a HUGE problem for a SURVIVAL knife).
And the handle seems fragile.
And the tang seems weak.
The knife doesn't hold an edge and is still fragile, serrations are breaking off, handle is falling apart...
I'm guessing it's because of the materials, build quality, and suitability for the purpose of being an outdoors knife for people who don't have specialized knowledge and just want to buy a decent knife off the rack

What’s all this, more of you not liking particular people? All I asked was for the OP to explain why the knife was garbage and this is what it leads to. Sorry for asking for objective evidence on what someone calls “garbage”. I should just shut up and agree with you and never question why, correct?

Several rescue missions every year, usually Velebit and Biokovo. Mostly Czech tourists.
Some of them even get hornet stings or snake bites in the process, and to make things better - there's no cell signal up there.

The good news is that I've found a much more reliable "As Seen On TV" knife and this one comes a bunch at the same time!

You can question all you want, but most stop asking the same question when it's been answered at length, by many people, multiple times. Some folks are special, though.

I equate this particular set of knives to a cash grab.

The show was wildly popular, so it must have made sense to mass produce an inexpensive bunch of products that they could distribute to large box stores and online retailers.

They are certainly not that great in quality, but likely helped generate income and brand buzz.

I would also imagine there are royalties paid to Bear, which would raise the price for these tools to the advertised price.

Not great quality for sure, but an understandable business move. Not one that I would have made personally. To market the knife as a survival tool, but then make it with materials that are subpar is not the route I would have taken.

But then again, I don't manage Gerber.
