Becker folder

I'm not sure it actually makes his job harder, just, well... different.:D

Bladite actually does have a good sense of humor, it's just that it may differ from some of us on occasion. He's trying to do a job as moderator, whereas I'm immoderate as heck.:D

Still, he has put up with my silliness without too much complaint, which makes him almost a Saint.

i'm just going to start deleting threads i don't like ;)

maybe ;) i'm not bitter though ;>

someone had better send me a Machax soon though ;)

i have a list of things i need to buy Becker though, the new BK-02, the new necker, some slabs, like that. nothing major.

me? i'm super looking forward to the new Magnum Camp - that used to be a grail object for me, right after the MachAx goodies. thank goodness i have nearly all of those locked up. i mean ALL of them. minus a few ;)

btw, did you notice there's a rule in the FAQ now about saying tweener? yah, made you look :)

I mightve missed it, but what're everyones thoughts on steel choice for a blade like this? I like the AUS8 stainless kabar uses in some of their folders, and it'd keep costs pretty reasonable. The blade out of 1095 like the rest of the Becker line would be pretty sweet as well, so long as take-down of the knife wasn't too bad for occasional cleaning.

Yeah, sure. Fess up, now... you love these threads.:D

If I had it in my power, you'd have your MachAx. I'm right there with you on wanting the Magnum Camp, and the new version of the BK-2, too. As soon as I have the money, they're mine! Mine, I tell you, mine!

I think the only Beckers you don't have locked up, are the ones they haven't released yet.:D

Oh, yeah, something else I'm waiting for: the Tweeners!

Tweeners! Tweeners! Tweeners! (coming soon to a Blade show near you).

Oh, by the way, could I interest you in a nice Becker folder? I know you don't have one of those yet.:D:D:D

You didn't miss it; we didn't talk about it yet. When I was designing that beast, I did have some steel in mind. I made it so all the parts are easily cut, and it uses a simple stainless that's been around forever. While 1095 CroVan is my favorite all around carbon for a fixed blade, I was thinking of a stainless for the folder.

Yes, AUS 8 would be a good steel, but what I actually had in mind was... are you ready for this? Plain old 440C. 440C? Why that old thing?

Well, I admit that it's not one of the sexy new super steels, but it's relatively easy to work, relatively inexpensive, and I think KA-BAR does a good job with it.

Any thoughts?

have two :)

Bladite

Sigh. If anyone would have a Becker folder, it would be you.;)

I beg forgiveness: I forgot who I was dealing with for a moment.

Someday, I, too, will have neat goodies like you do (though never as many — at my age, I can never catch up).

I dig it. I think some sort of super steel would be kinda un-Beckerish. Straight forward, hard working blades is what I think of when I think of Becker, not the latest whiz bang, flavour-of-the-week knives out there. I never owned a blade in 440C, but I haven't heard anything bad about the steel for what it is, so I'd certainly support that steel choice.

By George, you have the Becker spirit! Simple, straightforward and hard working.

No, 440c isn't a whiz-bang super steel, and some folks look down their noses at it for just that reason. I, on the other hand, am a firm believer in the old adage of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," and 440C certainly isn't broken. There's a reason that it's been a popular steel for so many years: it works, and it works well. It takes a good edge, holds it relatively well, and it really is highly rust resistant.

I have an old Buck 112 in 440C that's still going strong, that's still razor sharp, after about 40 years.

What steel would actually be used wouldn't be up to me, but 440C is what I had in mind. There are other, newer steels available that might be better — I don't know, I'm not a metallurgist — but I had 440C in mind because it has a number of factors that make it a good choice for this kind of folder.

Other thoughts? I'd be interested.

License the Triad lock from Mr. Demko and use it with this knife.

That would be up to Ethan Becker and KA-BAR.:D

I designed this one with a strong lockback to keep the costs down while providing a beefy, positive lock system.

The Triad lock seems to be a good system, and I like it, but it would be an added expense, and that would be up to KA-BAR.

Handles look lots like the Ontario Hossom Retribution folders. (And the BK2 of course :x) The grip on those things is really comfortable (and micarta) Maybe add an opening hole?

Although the handles on the Retribution are nice, I don't think the handles on the Becker folder are really similar at all. I designed the Becker folder to have a "folderized" version of the traditional Becker handles, handles that have been in production for over twenty-five years.

As far as putting an opening hole in the blade (that was what you were talking about, right?), it already has a thumb stud for opening. Personally, I like thumb-studs better than I like holes. Thumb-studs can be more easily operated when wearing gloves than a hole can, and since this was designed to be a hard use knife — where many people might be wearing gloves for various reasons — the thumb stud makes more sense to me.

A final decision on that kind of thing would be up to Ethan and KA-BAR in any event. I can design 'em, but it's not up to me whether they get produced or not.
