Beckerhead Gear

I'll get some better close-ups of one of my K&M's tomorrow. Google Images has a few good pics, but I can do better.

Side note: Sadly, Keith and Marge lost their compass supplier in Suunto, which discontinued the 20mm version they used, and so they're scrambling to find a new source. The Chinese compasses they're currently having to use look pretty good, but... they're Chinese compasses. I hope they are able to resolve their compass issues soon. I want one or two more of the K&M's. Wish I'd gotten one of the original brass ones.

Me too. I been looking for a good brass button ever since Marbles went downhill. Too bad I found them too late.

That damn cad/cam program almost blew up my computer.....shit

everything looks good so far.

I'm working on a drawing right now...

So, given your measurements, something like this? (Keep in mind, rough draft. I am eating pizza.) With an end cap that fits over the end, texturing, and a groove on the beveled front part, etc...

i'm not sure about that. any kind of capsule-shaped firesteel handle is a rip-off of the esee design and we'll never hear the end of it from the esee fanboys. either way, a capsule handle is already played out...a mini-becker handle is truly our own. besides, in an emergency if you can't procure a dry tinder i think that's the least of our worries.

I can make a solid one with knurling, either way we all need to decide on the same concept, besides we are not copying anything we are creating the beckerhead firesteel for men, not those little esee girl ones....:D

here is my blueprint picture, I can machine not draw.

It will look alot better once DerekH hits it up....

i think capsules are hugely overrated. how about thinking of enclosed design, the hold a steel, and some tinder, unscrews, reserves, and becomes a longer, more useful handle.

the key elements: length for holding, but *thin*, anything as thick as your thumb is RIGHT OUT, just large enough to hold a generic (but good) rod. we want these things ideally to be easy to store anywhere and not be bulky right? put a hole at one end of a lashing point.

extremely ideal: make one of the end be a tap in point for inserting a 1/2" long tool steel hex, that can take the handle of a Becker off :)

Now we are getting there....excellent

I know I'm not a Beckerhead (yet), but what do you guys think about a handle where the fire steel slides back in? So that when not in use there is only a short (like 1/4") bit sticking out. Then unscrew the tip a little bit and you can slide out the rest of the fire steel. Thing is it would make the handle very long. Just throwing it out there.

I've never put threads on a firesteel, but I bet that it would spark like crazy trying to do it.....

Exotac is already doing this, on a small scale, perhaps we better revamp the whole project to put some distance between us and the others that are making similar products. I agree with JV3, we would never hear the end of it, and it gets really close to copying products already out there.

I don't know what the possibility of this would be but what about a fire steel handle shaped like a shrunken down Becker handle and to make things a little more unique have the fire steel replaceable by having a hole in one end and have a screw or something that would attach it to the handle.

Maybe someone could draw something up and see what that would look like?

Lets look into a 2 piece Becker handle, that comes apart and the firesteel is placed and locked into position using a collar ring and compression from the handle assembly bolts.

That sounds pretty cool if the handle is big enough to be functional. In other words, I wouldn't scale it way, way down. Would there still be room for some tinder too?

I would like to think so, imagine a 3 finger full grip, with the standard Becker profile, leave the dimensions close to the same, but hollow, with an area large enough for a 3/8"x 3" GG firesteel. I think so.

Maybe a fire steel side by side with a chunk of fatwood? You'd just flip the steel, correct? What I mean is that the collar would be engaged if the steel is inside or outside of the scales. That way, there's not a big hole in the end of the scales when the steel isn't deployed for use.

I've got a lot of full-sized Grivory that came off my users. I may have to play around with this on a full-sized scale.

To add: I'm still down for a $20-$30 machined version from Flexxx. I'd be proud to own the work of a fellow Beckerhead.

You know what would be super awesome? A firesteel scraper that looked liked a miniature BK2 or BK3.

Now you are onto something.

PS, I still want a Beckerhead firesteel kit though

PAY HOMAGE TO THE MODS!!

Personally id prefer a waterproof cylindrical container of some sorts. Something like Exo-Tac's Match cap, thatll fit some NATO matches, abit of tinder plus maybe a fishhook and some line? Add a hole for some paracord for neck carry?

It dosent get more simple than a cylinder shape.

Ive got enough fire-steels as it is incl. ESEE's firekit. If something is made for the BeckerHeads, it would be cool it was something else. I mean firesteels are all over the place, know what i mean?

Anyways, this is turning out to be a great group
