Beckerhead Gear

Agreed. Props to Ethan, Bladite, and Moose. That's sincere. Not my usual joke.

I put all the credit on DawsonBob and RABII, they were the guys that started the ball rolling.

Exotac is already doing this, on a small scale, perhaps we better revamp the whole project to put some distance between us and the others that are making similar products. I agree with JV3, we would never hear the end of it, and it gets really close to copying products already out there.

I own a exotac and its pretty sweet, the firesteel is kind of thin, 3/8 is perfect IMO.
Whatever you guys come up with sounds good to me, I'm pretty simple.
Damn I wish I had my new lathe now, so I could bust out some prototypes....

This forum is awesome....

Here are those pics of the K&M knurling I promised.

Yes with the waterproof capsule and the steel...

Here are a few videos for those who do not know what a lathe is.

this is a mori seiki cnc machine, I dream of having this one, I ran one for a while and its the Cadillac of cnc lathes....

I had a seiki for a bit and while it's a great turning center I liked my Mazaks much better.

Can I have a Mazak, I will test it out and let you know what I think about it...;)

The K&M looks pretty sweet, but ours will be awesome.

I dunno guys, I am kinda put off on this idea. I mean the firesteel kit with a capsule on the end of a firesteel seems like two things to me. 1-Played out. 2-Not Becker style. I mean if I have this metal capsule, and it has a little rod sticking out the end of it, and it is only .5" deep into the tube, I really feel like there is a chance that if I fall and land on this thing it could snap the steel right off. If we epoxy the firesteel into it, you are out a whole kit. Even if it was attached in some other manner, like a through-screw type thing, it would still I think suffer from this rather glaring weakness (IMO).

...I may have just had an idea. Gimme a bit.

well damn-it DerekH, you need to tell us what you would like to see.....;)

I want the fire-steel to be 3/8 or even thicker

i'm not sure about that. any kind of capsule-shaped firesteel handle is a rip-off of the esee design and we'll never hear the end of it from the esee fanboys. either way, a capsule handle is already played out...a mini-becker handle is truly our own. besides, in an emergency if you can't procure a dry tinder i think that's the least of our worries.

I'm in for a unique Beckerhead item.
But I think we should junk the firesteel idea.

What about a fold out firesteel, something that could be milled into something, I like the capsule idea, but it has been done before. I open to anything right now, and I'm about to start drinking in about an hour, and I was thinking about going and stirring up some trouble in the ESEE forum. Haven't decided yet. I'll post up something if I decide to go, bring some homies with me.

Then what's your idea trailbum? I personally think a K&M sized rod handle would be awesome, something you can actually hold on to.

The way I look at is like this, if I'm have a handle on a Ferro rod, I want it serve an alternate purpose, not just a handle.

Another option would be an o ring sealed pocket that is sized for he pocket on Becker sheaths, with an alternate model that bolts to the BK2 sheath.

On the other hand, Machined Remora handles, with knurling and are hollow to store tinder or what have you would be bitchen too.

Like I said, gimme a minute, I am working up a model.

I'm grooving on Bladeite's exotech-oid idea, with a 3/8" rod instead of their smaller than a pencil jobs.
a 1.5" long BK2 shaped striker is pretty cool, too.

Why not all of the above? Here is my idea, in rough form.

Okay, so we have a capsule that is about 4.5"~5" long. At the tip is an indention to hold a button compass, whatever. Then we have the main tube. Down one side of the tube a half-round channel is ground, that is 4" long. At the other end of the tube, the open end, we have a small lip that is about .25" deep. Fitting over this end we have a small sleeve that will only slide on one way over the open end, and has a hole milled and tapped to allow a small set screw to go through the outer sleeve to hold the firesteel in place. Around the circumference there are other holes that allow other small set screws to go directly into the main body of the tube itself, holding it into place, and helping to stabilize as well as secure the firesteel. Then the open end has an internal thread, and the cap (which I didn't draw) has a thread with o-ring to seal it all up.

The exterior of the main tube could be knurled however it need be done, the firesteel wouldn't be sticking out and in as much danger of breaking, could easily be replaced, and the whole thing would be tough as nails if done in steel. Plus you could toss a button compass in the end. Tons of storage, heck, you could even put a small allen wrench and extra firesteel in there if you felt like it.

And yes, after looking at it here, I realize it looks like an uncircumcised penis. Thems the breaks.

Like I said, rough idea, the measurements are all kinds of off, but you get the idea. Also the firesteel would fit the groove exactly, I made my demo firesteel in the drawing smaller to show the groove detail and whatnot.

Good idea and it's somewhat different from the rest.
We could call it the Becker "Dick Firestick"... :D

The only problem with that is how the hell do I drill the side of the shaft to add the firesteel.

A mill will do it but I'm still not sure about getting one......

Drill hole lengthwise then remove the rest of the stock until it is the right height? I dunno.

Good god man, I am a computer nerd, not a machinist!
