Beckerhead Jobs

I used to do some Land Surveying in High School and College. Still got my Ontario machete ct5 22" I used every day. Got an associates in Corrosion Technology and Work for a Gas Pipeline Transmission Company. Been there for the last 6 years. Started as a Data Technician and now a Pipeline Integrity Specialist. I keep pipelines from blow'n up.

Well, since this thread started, I haven't had anything to contribute.

Now I do.

As of today, I am an industrial electrician performing facility and mechanical maintenance at a powdered metal facility.

Yay me!

Moose

Glad to hear it, Moose! Congrats!

I'm a software developer... Like others, I wish I could earn a comparable living by doing something that involves knives and guns, but it isn't likely. So, by day, I sling code; at night, I dream of Beckers and boomsticks.

Software hack. The work I do is not really development. I configure and extend the software we sell to meet the customer's needs. Out of the box, it's pretty useless. Much of the work uses the software's own configuration gui, but also often includes html, javascript, and .net web services. A little over half my job is the technical stuff, the balance is working with the customers, identifying their needs, and designing the solution.

I'd have more becker money if I didn't spend so much on cub scouts, boy scouts, girl scouts, and fostering for a boxer breed rescue. But at least the scouts give me an excuse to use the larger blades.

Hey, I resemble that remark! Senior GIS program coordinator and survey services manager for the world's busiest airport. I help our local Trimble account rep make his monthly mortgage payment :)

I worked in restaurants for 7 years while in high school and college. Changed gears and worked on motorcycles for 11 years, all brands and types. Loved working on bikes, but got tired of working in the filthy shop day in and day out. Went to electronics school and I have worked on survey grade GPS, mapping and GIS GPS, optical robotics and total stations, and construction lasers for about 10 years now. I am surprised there are no surveyors on here, they are mostly knife toting boy scouts, lol.

I am an Architect and work with a Chicago Based International Property Consultant as a Senior Project Manager in the Projects & Development Services Vertical.

Regards
Moin.

I recently started working on the north slope oilfields in Alaska. Where I'm not allowed to carry a knife. But the opportunities and schedule almost make up for it. Prior to that, I was a police dispatcher/dispatch supervisor for six years.

I knew you had to be in the industry with that user name... :)

Out of curiosity, why do they not let you carry a knife? Seems like the kind of place where you'd need one...

One year ago, I started an apprenticeship in a small metal shop near where I live. We make gauges, you can get a little impression of the stuff we do here:

It's very difficult and takes a long time to get everything right, because sometimes you just have to get it right, with accuracies down to a few thousandths of a millimeter. That's not a lot of room for failure, guys :D I like it so far, it's not always easy and it's not always fun, but I guess that's just how life goes. It's good work though, we sell to large companies around the world (like Audi, VW, Volvo), and it pays very very good. Most of the work I do is high-precision stuff, but I know how to operate a lathe and milling machine too.

I'm 21 years old and I'm able to afford the rent for my room in the flat that I share with my best friend, along with everything else I need to live, and I'm incredibly grateful for that. If everything works out as planned, I'll be finished with my apprenticeship in 1.5 years.

Like 911 dispatch? There is an opening in my town for a 911 dispatch job I'm considering applying for but I'd love to hear more about that type of work.

As a knife toting Boyscout, scoutmaster if you must, I have to protest the display of geodo-anchor equipment....

Oh... I've been a surveyor for over 40 years.... And a professional (registered) land surveyor for over 26 years....

Ok, fun's over. I'm moving on shortly.
