Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread

I know you can do it. Just got off the phone with the nice people at Jantz. Might actually start the Machax mod sooner rather than later. Also ordered a little 1095.....

WOO!

1095 is a bit more demanding to heat-treat than 1084. It performs pretty well it you just give it a 1084 heat-treat, but you can get more out of it with a more controlled process. Jantz doesn't sell 1084, and it's nice to be able to shop in just one place at first. All my early steel was from Jantz.

Yah, I'm pretty psyched. They had 5160, but only one thickness. More for forging, I'd guess. I still have to grind up the small piece of 52100 WW gifted me, but first gotta take care of a couple obligations for another BF member. You might see those projects here, but I want to talk to him first to make sure he doesn't mind. That was the impetus to order stuff from Jantz in the first place. They have big blocks of Micarta.

Finally getting to putting scales on my sister's birthday gift (5" damascus santoku) and a nakiri for myself. Tiger maple. Brass or SS pins?

....and also having a Smuttynose Durty - mud season hoppy brown ale. SFG I could drink it all.

Brass.
Stainless will be SO MUCH HARDER than maple that they will stand proud and be very hard to sand evenly.

Got me two kinds of dark beer that will be posted when my phone cooperates.

Too late. The brass pinstock was tarnishing already, though color-wise I thought it would look good. Plus, I like a challenge....especially one that I probably can't rise to. You know, self flagellation. It's in my blood.

I was in the beer store tonight and was overwhelmed with choices. Got the Shipyard IPA mix pack ('cause it was only $11.99), a 4-pack of Founder's Imperial Stout and a 4 of SNBC Narwhal (before it disappears).
I looped through that damn place 3 times, and still felt like I could have taken home a LOT more. There was a special on Shipyard Mint Chocolate Stout, but I was hesitant to take the chance on a box of 22 oz. bottles, though I would love to try it. Their XXXX IPA is pretty yummy....to me, anyway.

Here is the sheath I put together for my big knife setup. Still not settled on the loop setup. I am thinking about doing a twine braid with mesquite toggle.

Ok, it's on its way to its new owner, so here's a screamshot.
Mr. Moderator Dude better post some pix when he gets it sheathed and all. :D

That looks a little off, like maybe you were drinking at the grinder or something. Seriously, who does your quality control?

....sorry, I know I should leave the snarking for the dedicated thread.....but I didn't want your ego to explode by saying it looks beautiful and flawless and as timeless as Lena Horne. Envious of Moderator Dude.

Awesome Work Daizee!!!

Well at the behest of our own GSOM here is a little KA-BAR 1211 mod I knocked out yesterday. When getting pics together I realized I have probably modded this knife a little bit by bit since it came into my possession years ago. So I grabbed some similar pics to show the progression.

When I first got it, it was just beat up KA-BAR with no edge, and some chewed up blade coating. A lot of the edge had been eaten up already, so I sharpened it up, stripped it, then gave it a hot vinegar bath.

After that it was just put to use, over time the edge just became more and more convexed... Also sometime around here I sharpened the clip on it for giggles, didnt like it much so I knocked it off which exaggerated the clip some.

Finally it got to the point it was looking pretty rough, so I gave it a little spa treatment. This included a hand done regrind. Basically reground the bevel on a course then medium stone, then gave it a little hand stropping. This helped with the thick grind/edge a lot and made it such a better cutter but after some use I thought it could be better.

SO just the other day I took it to my 2X42 and thinned this sucker out a lot. Brought the grind up probably 1/8" or so... much slicier... Also exaggerated the clip some more on it.

Well speaking to Hoss over in the snark thread I decided to go ahead and mod the guard. Like it a lot this way. Also stripped the paint off the of pommel and guard then hit everything up with a wire wheel. Gave it a quick buff and I think its ready to go!

Who knows what will happen to this knife over the next couple years. :D

Added an older pic, then a current one to better show the difference.

I've never seen him myself, but I'm certain he drinks. There was a mysteriously empty porter on the workbench this weekend.

Glad you like it, fellas, thanks. :)

IWHAF: grind off the top/back guard!! it's almost there. Looking great.
Oh wait, you did! *WIN*

Oh yes, very happy...

Seriously though Daizee fantastic stuff.

These gotta dry for 72 hours and then they'll be getting many coats of wipe-on poly. I decided just to use Bush Oil for the colorant and not eff around with dyes. I did overheat the pins a little, but I think they still look OK.

Pics not doing justice to the wood. Once they're done done, I'll get a few more.
