Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread

Heh, I thought the same thing cept maybe sammich some cardboard in. I fell asleep way early last night and missed all my late night foruming...

Jim Bensinger made a pattern welded 4-bar seax blade.
I put handles on it and made a wood lined scabbard.

This is the blade I was hammering on at the gathering - finally got it heat treated and handled.

the handles on both knives came from the same chunk of oak I harvested -- the one I forged was wiped down with vinegar and it darkened up from a reaction with the tannins.

Thank you! Awww shucks!

Thanks! And as I put in the op, one of my "intents" was to make a way for anyone to add "gription" to their scales that was cheap, easy, and effective. Just takes the tiniest bit of elbow grease.

I have played around with stipling including different ways of toning it up or down, rubberizing, and all that, for a user blade that is in your bare hands constantly, it just doesn't work out for me. However, for a knife that would be used on a boat, over or underwater, or in super greasy environments it might be beneficial. For woods work or general work though, ergonomics and smoothness win every time for me. This mod though adds some grip without adding unnecessary "roughness" it's a smooth/soft/warm texture. To chop well with this knife I use a 2-3 finger grip holding onto the butt, this gription will just make that a more secure endeavor.

Also as a side note I would recommend using trimmed up gorilla/duct tape to protect the edges of the scales. Different rocks will probably produce different effects, you can buy tumbling media, or just walk outside ;) think sharp and abrasive. I would also recommend shaking for a short time (30 seconds or so) then checking your progress, (it's plastic and doesn't take much) then repeating until you find your desired level of damage. And above all else.
.. try to have fun!

The stock grips on one of my bk16's I had sandblasted, which produces a very similar effect. More grip without any problem areas, and a soft feel to the handle. Nicely done sir, nicely done.

I guess I shoulda put this in here, tho it's minor. Mostly, I did it so I would have an easy way to carry this knife that had not been getting carried.

The snaps are screwed into the eyelets, so....easy on/off. Gonna do this for a couple of my other small EDC fixed blades.

Thank you very much! I think sandblasting would definitely be an excellent route to go for those with access.

I have wanted a Wilkinson Sword Issue Type D for a long time and one popped up over here awhile back. When I got it the handle needed a lot of work, but I have to hand it to Wilkinson, the geometry, the steel, the grind, all FIRST CLASS! Unbelievably well done for an issue knife. Oh yeah, 7mm thick!

This knife chops like a hatchet!

Hey fellas, long time member but just started posting. I did an intro in the general discussions thread and posted a photo over in the Becker Knife & Tools thread of a BK9 I'm doing some mods on. I was asked to share here as well so here's a photo of the first step in my mod of the 9. I prefer the looks of a drop point over a clip point profile for most knives. Even though the 9 is listed as a drop point I wanted to soften the hard lines with more of a slight radius to the spine. More mods are planned and I'd be glad to share the progress.
Thanks for taking a look.

Nicely done, and I see you've drawn in a choil too.
That will be a nice intermediary between a regular 9 and a 21. :-)

That's freaking beautiful! Can ya show a pic of the tip a bit closer or undervbetter light?

I've been contemplating something to this affect and man, you nailed it!
Gonna give the sander its innagural run tomorrow with some deramping and guard grind downs tomorrow. If I get the nads, I might give this a try!

Welcome to the Becker back yard...
Pull up a seat and hang out a bit!

Thanks bro! I sure can no problem at all. I haven't blended the edge back in yet at the tip so it looks slightly blunt.
