Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread

Dude, that 9 looks great!

Thanks bro!

Just finished up part of mod number two. The area roughly marked with pencil will be taken out and a custom handle made but I wanted to show the knife with a choil in case anyone wanted to make that mod the theirs. I actually messed up a little (nothing that can't be fixed though) on this part as I was originally going to go with just a normal choil and stay with the factory shape/profile for scales, so the where the choil is now is actually a little far forward for where I'm going with the mod (A high centered handle, not sure what it's actually called). I think it'll be ok though, it'll make more sense once the custom scales are put on. ;-)

I like that idea! It's gonna look great once completed!
I prob don't have to tell you this, but...
This could be a potential weak point

Eta: we love some work in progress pics!

I like where you're going with this. Question for ya, if you're going to remove the front guard are you going to keep the rear the same?

Back to work now, time to remove a thumb ramp. :-)

Nice looking 9, removing the ramp will leave you with what is referred to around these parts as a "Wayne".

There was a thread awhile ago asking if anyone has removed a ramp and if so, how does it look? The result from bringing the spine down to level leaves the lowest "jimp" left in the spine and this raised a question. What do we call this straggler, this lone survivor forced to tell it's tale of the encounter with a horrendous machine that devours steel and spits out what's left of its fallen comrades in the form of crumbs and steel dust?

We know that his name is Wayne and how he is formed, but the rest is a mystery.

Thanks bro! Yes Sir. I realize that, I wish I had 1/4" of that steel back :( where I started the choil to far forward since I changed my mind about it) but that's life. As I always say... you can always take some more off, but ya can't put it back on once ya take it off! LOL

LOL Cool, I've got a Wayne now. :-)

Not exactly, the rear will be modified too. The top rear will be smoothed/rounded slightly and the exposed pommel removed.

As i mentioned I've been out of the knife making loop for a good while now. I like the idea of the removable scales but hate the looks of the hex nuts on the one side. Do any of you fellas happen to know if anyone makes or where one can get a male/female hex bolts (hex or as some say socket head on both sides).
Thanks,
T

A while back old granitehead made a comment in another thread that I had not posted any pics of my throwing knives that I mentioned there that I had made. Well, finally getting around to posting a pic of them. My pics usually draw heavy vacuum as I don't do "photo composition" well.

I have made 4 versions of throwing knives, 3 of which are based on the BK9 (one only somewhat loosely). I have 3 more in the design phase, one being based on the BK9.

All of the throwing knives I make are IKTHOF (International Knife Throwing Hall of Fame) legal - at least 12 inches long.

The smallest one at the bottom is based on a knife based on a knife based on a knife...... Everyone else's version of that one is usually around 10 or 11 inches long - in fact the first throwing knives I bought for competitive throwing is what I used as a pattern. The only problem with those were I foolishly believed the maker - he told me they were 12 inch IKTHOF knives. Practiced with them for about 5 months and then one day I set them down alongside a 12 inch piece of 2x4 I had lying on a bench - that was I KNEW was a foot long and my knives were shorter!!! Apparently he started with 12 inch pieces of steel and ended up with 11-3/4" knives. So I made a bunch that I KNEW were legal, by a mile. :D

Specs: A36 steel, 3/16" thick

The picture is deceptive - the top knife is the largest of the 4, but appears smaller. Probably because of the camera angle.

For emergency maintenance in the field, I put in stainless Phillips head screws that have two slots open for flat head as well.

As far bolts, any hardware store should carry them. They aren't exceedingly hard to come by.

Looking good by the way.

I've not ever seen something like that....I think what most makers do is use a threaded barrel and screws from both sides for that kind of look. Problem is, those BK&T tangs are pretty damned hard to drill out, so trying to find a barrel that will fit and the ensuing CF of trying to make everything work is too aggravating, if you ask me. What some folks do is use phillips head screws and chicago fasteners....seen it done on wood scales, never on the factory Grivory. Also have seen some "chain ring" bolts that look pretty good....

I'd say just make some nice scales and epoxy those suckers on with some nice SS or nickel silver pins. Done.

Old GRANITEHEAD?????

Also, two of those knives are Pleistocene era, the other two MUCH older....couldn't you have kept the names from the same epoch ;)?

They're all lookin' good, zzyzz. Looking forward to seeing them in action.....
