Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread

Old GRANITEHEAD?????

Also, two of those knives are Pleistocene era, the other two MUCH older....couldn't you have kept the names from the same epoch ;)?

They're all lookin' good, zzyzz. Looking forward to seeing them in action.....

I picked the names based on my favorite extinct creatures. So many people that put a name on a knife model pick overused names like "Hunter" or "Skinner". I thought about imitating Randal Knives, with "1" , "2", etc. based on the order I designed them, but since I designed 1,2,and 3 all the same day, that would have made them 1A, 1B and 1C. And since no one else is using extinct critter names, I'm different. More ways than 1. :D:D.

They've already seen quite a bit of throwing. The top 3 probably have nearly 5K throws each on them. I made a set of 3 for each version and 1 of the three sets gets thrown 50x per day minimum on "no rain" days, although I skip a few days when there has been so much rain that my range is swamped under standing rainwater.

The Smilodons have fewer throws on each of them. Probably less than 1K each. I made a set of 30 for practicing "speed throwing", which is sticking as many knives as possible from 2 meters (1/2 spin) in 20 seconds. I've stuck as many as 22 / 20 sec. The world record is 30 in 20. That was set at the IKTHOF Canadian National throw back in June or July of 2015, and then tied by 2 folks at the US throw in Austin back in September. Part of my slowness is my knives are too heavy. At 11+ ounces each, I can only control about 10 knives at a time in my off hand and manipulate them cleanly. I loose time grabbing the 2nd/3rd stack from a table. The record holders are using really thin (1/16" or 3/32"), narrow (1/2" to 3/4") blades. They can hold 15 to 20 at a time and can be "fanned" with their off hand thumb easily.

My next versions are a slimmed down Mammoth - 1/4" to 3/8" narrower, 2 leather handled Bowies for Mountain Man throwing competitions based on the Western W49 and the BK9, some smilodons with less taper to the handle, and finally some throwing stars cut out of rotary saw blades.

I no longer have all 30 Smilodons. Right after the speed throw back in September, one of the other throwers bought 5 off me. He is primarily a no spin thrower (won IKTHOF No Spin this year) and wanted some spinners. The Smilies were very similar to his no-spin knives and he liked them.

I've not ever seen something like that....I think what most makers do is use a threaded barrel and screws from both sides for that kind of look. Problem is, those BK&T tangs are pretty damned hard to drill out, so trying to find a barrel that will fit and the ensuing CF of trying to make everything work is too aggravating, if you ask me. What some folks do is use phillips head screws and chicago fasteners....seen it done on wood scales, never on the factory Grivory. Also have seen some "chain ring" bolts that look pretty good....

I'd say just make some nice scales and epoxy those suckers on with some nice SS or nickel silver pins. Done.

Hadn't thought about the Chicago screws and I'd never seen the chain ring bolts so thanks for the tips and help! Anything similar to those would be fine as long as they're the right size, just looking to get away from the hex shape in the one scale. I do some machining and could make something custom but it'd be far simpler to buy something just for this one. It will definitely have new scales but I'm not sure yet what I'll use.
Thanks again for all the help and advice!

And thanks again for all the kind words fellas, it feels great to be working on a knife again after such a long time... even if it's just mods!!!

As i mentioned I've been out of the knife making loop for a good while now. I like the idea of the removable scales but hate the looks of the hex nuts on the one side. Do any of you fellas happen to know if anyone makes or where one can get a male/female hex bolts (hex or as some say socket head on both sides).
Thanks,
T

I used the brass tube from Lowes "hobby" drawer in the hardware section. It's an exact fit for the factory screw hole. Tapped it out to 8-32 and used 8-32x3/8 flat head hex screws.

The 15 was drilled out to fit but the 5 was perfect.

I used a drill and a tap bit. Carefully and slowly back and forth until the bit bottomed out, then cut to length, ran the tap thru to deburr the cut. Worked like a charm.

Cool, thanks for the tip!

This is totally unrelated, but an excuse to try a picture sharing mechanism.

My friend Hans doing a difficult freehand grind:

(hmm, not working. I think I see why...)

BK9 Mod 4 Re-profiling the tang/handle.

Profile lines roughly drawn out.

Ground out just needs a little fine tuning.

Thanks guys! I wish I'd had my plan sorted out 100% before I ground the choil, the drop is at least 1/4" further forward now than I'd like.
Live & Learn ;-)

ETA: It would be fine for someone with large hands, but the handle fit is going to be on the long side for average hands.

send it to Dubz - that's just a little steak knife in his mitts!

I've wondered what it would look like without a guard. I'm loving everything about this mod.
Man, what a way to come storming in with this! Thanks for keeping us in the loop on your great work!

ETA: I see you added a few more Waynes up there, Iookin good!

Thanks Slice! LOL Yeah I've got a few more Waynes laid out but haven't filed them yet, he just looked too lonely by himself. :-)
The only handle material I have left over from the knife making days is some olive green micarta and some red, black & gray fiber spacer material. Not sure if I'll go with that or order something.

A Sasquatch size man huh!? ;-)

I am curious if using the stock grivory, will the material removed (from the scales) end up revealing the hollowed out core?

I'm sure it will. Stock Grivory isn't a real good choice for scale mods on the large BK's, given that they aren't solid. I'm pretty sure He said he was going to use some left over Micarta or get some new stock for the scales.

a little extra handle length never hurt anyone.....
