Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread

What you are looking for is a VFD, that will allow you to moderate the speed of your grinder/belt sander.
But, take a look at the Polar Bear Forge Sling kit. All you would need would be some bolts, a drill, some bits and a motor.

I have even seen a thread on here where someone made an impromptu VFD from an old treadmill... I will see if I can come up with a link for you, but there shouldn't be many threads for you to wade through when searching for "treadmill" lol.

Good work folks!

I have a spare set of tweener scales that will be modeled to fit my 24, thanks!

All this talk about grinders....I still need to replace the table on my 2x42 (I bent it when I fell on the grinder and knocked it onto the concrete floor) but the rest of it is useful. Finally finished up my little 16 project. Re-profiled the blade a little, crowned the spine a little, added a firesteel notch (crowned spine doesn't strike the steel too well  ), put in subtle yellow cutting board liners and rounded off the sharp edges of the KB Micarta. Finished of the Micarta with some natural Danish oil and power buffed it with carnauba wax. After I was done re-grinding the blade shape, I also took it to the slack belt to redo the edge and thin it out a bit. Pretty happy with how it turned out; now Imma gonna hafta make a sheath for it. Oh, yeah - took the blade to a 600 grit semi-polish. Made it hard to take pics...

POIDH!

Lost about a ¼" of blade length dropping the point a bit, but so far it cuts great on cardboard and my scrapwood test stick.

Thanks very much for the info, I appreciate it! To be perfectly honest though after all my time at work I'm tired. I don't want to build anything. I want to pull a grinder out of a box, put it together. Mount it to my bench. And then make knives. I am fortunate enough to be able to expense this purchase out to my business. So I'd like to get one that is set up and ready to go.

It's hard to hate on a KMG....

I replaced the factory motor on my lathe with a treadmill motor, works great! My 2x72 I built myself and use a variable speed bench grinder motor on it. Got around $350 total in it.

Don't blame ya, If I could have afforded it I would have went that route also and saved all the time I spent tweaking. Not twerking! ;-)

Try harder next time. ;)

I'm trying not to use the whole steel so I'll have SOME left when I am in a SERIOUS SURVIVAL SITUATION. SSS's do not come along that often.....BUT - I am trying to be prepared. Don't wanna have a little toothpick of firesteel when the chips are down because of wasting it in a bacchanalian sparkfest.

But I'll test it out a few more times.....'cause it's pretty!

You mean a Beerchanalian sparkfest :P

My KMG has a 1.5HP 110V $50 used motor with 3-speed step pulleys. For what I've got into it, it's awesome. I have a treadmill motor etc., and would LOVE to mount the control panel so I can crank the speed up to "Fat Burn"! Not sure it would be actually better, though. The current motor is TEFC.

Oh, and yermom.... wants this knife (this is not a sales post, this one is spoken for):

Some vaguely sunlit pictures in the gallery post:

Welcome any time-house is a little crowded, so might or might not be able to put ya up, but you're always welcome. Lemme know ahead of time, just to be sure I'm here. Show season startin' up again.
