Beckerhead Knife Making and Modification Thread

Yeah, Tapatalk shows one, but not the regular, web page BF.

@pollock9131: just use the emoji button (the one that looks like a yellow smiley face) or type ": thumbup :" (colonthumbupcolon, no spaces...) Works like a charm.

unless you don't like the post, then there's :thumbdn: ( : thumbdn : )

Ah, yep no taptalk for me just my computer.

 ;-) Thanks bro!

So, finally decided to mess with my BK5. I chopped it down square:

That allowed me to make up a guard from some scrap 5160, which I slid on, and then affixed some wood scales. Trying out some koa I have. It's not got fancy figure so far, but we'll see what it looks like when I finish it. Rounded the bottom to a striking point. Choil now gone.

That looks pretty cool, CF. Like a trailing point...kwaiken - or something. The handle has a Japanese look to it. Except for the guard. Interesting so far.....

Daiz- what does silicone bronze pin mean? Is it simply made of silicone in a bronze color?

Oh, and gorgeous work as always.

Hey, DE, thanks.
It's a particular bronze alloy, not silicone the squishy stuff. This pin was a piece of silicon bronze brazing rod. It takes a really nice color when polished and buffed, though in this case it's only at 600x and there isn't enough surface to really be able to tell.

That's a nice looking slicer, daiz. The one question I have is about the hole for the tang - it looks oversize...so is it, or does the standard heat up the tang and drive it in method apply? Or is it OK and just gets filled with epoxy?

burning in the tang doesn't work so well with micarta, and I don't like the stresses it creates. So yes, it's oversize and completely filled with epoxy so it's like the tang is now embedded in a solid block (and pinned).

That looks awesome!

Doing some recommended upgrades on the Craftsman 2x42. Kinda hard to commit to cutting up the brand new guard I got after bending the old one by falling onto it....but I'd like to run some thicker belts and this is necessary for that to happen.

Cut down the (also bent) table for quick belt changes:

Nice looking.
I will be working on mine this weekend, if I can get the tims...

This is my latest knife now in hand sanding. Blade is 5.75" x 1.375" X .20". My work has taken a back seat to the challenges life has thrown my way, but thanks to the encouragement of Dex, Daizee and Todd Hunt during my Becker modifying days I am slowly up and pursuing my avocation. I still have an 8" fighter and a 4" hunter to complete.

Hawk, that looks amazing!
This one is from scratch, not a mod, right??

Thanks TBL and Daizee. That's a from scratch blade. In late December '13 I bought a Wilmont LB 1000, put it together and completely ruined a piece of scrap metal and a 3" blade I had sitting around. Realizing I was going off the rails, I went back to review how the pros do things. I profiled some blades from Aldo's 1095. I had some heat treated 440C from my grandfather and worked slowly as I learned to become part of the grinder. That blade is convex grind. I used my Blackjack Trailguide as a model to get the contour correct and double checked with my contour gauge.
