Beckerhead's Other Choppers

is "Jest Bolo" a term of art, or the name of certain things? Siegle and Bensinger have one of each?

I like Jim's a lot :D

Those Thai choppers look super cool. i should have scored a couple years ago, but forgot. carbon steel? :D

is that a Busse I spy with chips? cewl. it worked hard for that!

good choppers...

M18 of course :> some guy name Becker, esp the old Machax and the new Reinhardt...

I adore my Koster WSK like nothing else. great thing. need more people making stuff like that :D

lots of khuks. the bonecutters are awesome. old HI is also awesome.

parangatang gets weekly use as it's in the field cart for wood chores. often, the kershaw or some other big blade gets in there too.

If you're talking about the E-nep, she's 5160.

5160 A steel popular with forgers, it is extremely popular now and a very high-end steel. It is essentially a simple spring steel with chromium added for hardenability. It has good edge holding, but is known especially for its outstanding toughness (like L-6). Often used for swords (hardened in the low 50s Rc) because of its toughness, and is also used for hard use knives (hardened up near the 60s Rc).

.
"JEST" refers to the Jungle Evasion Survival Training that the US military ran in the P. I. for pilots and aircrew headed to 'Nam-it was taught by a local tribal group called the Aeta (if I remember correctly) and they still run the training for tourists.
A lot of the pilots bought the locally made bolos they used at the school-local word is "sinampaloc". This is an original 'Nam era JEST:
They're thinner, partially to conserve material and partially because they were meant for vegetation and bamboo, and I make mine for north america where there's more knotty hardwood and more splitting/batoning to be done.
The geometry on that 'Nam era JEST is not unlike a BK9 if it was a spine-to-edge convex with a little distal.

fine jim. fine.

i'm just going to assume you're going to JEST me.

dammit :D

JESTs are nice. I either want one, or want to design one. Big inspiration for the Junglas, I understand.

Heck yes, thread back from the dead!

When I'm not packing a Becker I usually have a TM Hunt. The mighty M18 is my go to, but my new Patrol Machax is amazing! The bowie is one nice chopper done right, quarter inch thick, full flat. Todd hasn't made many of these so grab one if you can.

Some of my others include my Bensinger JEST bolo, I have never seen such an amazing convex grind.

Next one of my newer mods (i can't remember if I posted it here already), I call it the BKXX. The Case bolo that inspired the Machax with the handle ground down to fit Ethan's much more comfortable handle.

Third is my LT Wright Overland Machete, this is actually my second. I liked my first so much I had LT make me one with black polished micarta handles.

Lastly is a new one I haven't used yet. Ethan strongly recommended this AG Russel kukri to me, but it took me a while to find one. Very similar shape to the Reinhardt mini kukri, but the weight and balance are completely different. It's much lighter than it looks at only 1/8'' thick.

I do suppose these don't really count as "real Beckers" any more, so these heavily modified ones are technically "other choppers" haha.

I have been growing very fond of my Gransfors Bruks Wildlife hatchet.
