benchmade mini ritter & large m-390

Mine arrived today, very nice knife as we all know, made 'better' by the M390 upgrade. Now I will warn some of you, the clip on mine arrived a little loose when clipped to the pocket, there was some clear space between the clip and the handle, so, I tried to bend it a little to make it retain just a bit better, rascal snapped right off at the spine of the E in Benchmade :( I called Benchmade up right away, just got it ;) and begged if they could help me out with a clip and she was very nice on the phone and felt bad I did such a thing, pushed just a tad too hard I guess, so she said she would work to get one out right away for me, in the mean time, I'll lace some paracord that will help draw it out of the pocket.

Here's a couple shots taken today

Arrived nice and sharp and ground down fairly thin edged so you know it will be an excellent cutter/slicer for sure.

Thanks again to Mr Ritter and the good folks at Benchmade and of course to our friends at KnifeWorks that helped to make this possible.

Don't suppose you could take a shot of the clip, could you?
So, it snapped from trying to bend the clip toward the scale, right?

Here's a couple shots and no, I wasn't pressing it down to the scale, you'd never get it to bend down any further, so it was removed from the knife, held the one end solid as I went to bend it down a little so that it would retain better, as it arrived there was a gap between the scale and the clip, so it didn't grip much like that. Just went a tad too far and you can see in the photo where the letter E's spine shows deep into the clip and that made a weaker spot and she snapped, surprised me as I've had to do this before to other clips without any troubles at all.

That looks like a design problem to me Gary .
I would be sending that photo to them to so that they can see that there may be an issue with how the clips are made .
The integrity of the steel has been compromised by the stamping of the letter .
The security of the knife while clipped to you could be an issue .
Nice knife by the way

Thanks Gary. Yeah, I didn't see how you'd be able to bend it in w/out taking it off. Just didn't understand what I thought I read.

I've had to do the same thing that you actually did to other clips and never had a problem. Wonder what's up with these clips? Other clips had "BENCHMADE" stamped in them, and didn't snap for me. Fortunately, my Ritter clip came tight to start with.

I'm old but I'm still a little tough ;) I guess I'm more than a match for a weak clip, in this case at least, it snapped suddenly so it didn't seem to really try and bend and stay put, I over did it and when I called the good folks at Benchmade they did take pity on me, thankfully!

The steel for the clips seem harder, I had to bend mine as well. I bead blasted it after and it was a pain in the butt to get it done.

Me too I found two of my M390 ritters and mini M390to have a lot of room . The clip curve is absolutely not touching the scales, and so it's almost useless. Tried to bend slightly with no success.
I sent a mail to Bechmade. let's what;'s happen from a customer sitting in the ol' Europe.

Yep, they left a lasting impression on that clip for sure ;) and mostho I hope you can get some clips to replace yours, otherwise, be careful trying to bend them down! It might have just been this one that was this way.

And Ken, yes sir, it's a great knife, tempted to also get the smaller Grip as well, but that will have to wait until funds build up a bit more.

Been thinking about something like this myself. How hard is it to swap the blade? I have never tried before?

I'm just worried I'm going to lose my percent centering and zero blade play by changing it up

Re: the clip issue, I hadn't paid much attention to mine, as it hasn't gone in pocket for daily use yet. So, I got it out last night, and the clip on my Mini is fine. Touches the scale and had what I would consider " normal " retention.

The blade grind is even, and the edge is decent, but it's a little toothy, and could use a little work. It's sharp, but not like I am use to with Benchmades.
I did a quicky comparison with my old Mini in 440C that I touched up a couple weeks ago, and the old knife performed much better. Not a big deal though. It can be taken care of...

I hope too! Still not received any news from my enquiry.
Probably because I'm so far?
I don't know!

Officially, it would void the warrantee. Unoficially, it is rather easy with patients and very good pair of Torx screw driver. Make sure you dot get a cheap one that may strip the screw head.

Other than that, it is easy to do. :D

Igored- Coarse Texture Coyote Brown with green liners and titanium barrel spacers.
This is a dream knife now with that durable M390!
Sorry for the Photo size, I cannot get into my photobucket for some reason.
After I acid stone wash the screws and clip in a few weeks, she will be a happy camper.
