benchmade mini ritter & large m-390

my Sebenza has sat in the safe since my grip came in and i dont see it coming out any time soon, thinking of maybe selling it and getting a mini and 2 sets of wilkins

I just sold both of my Sebenza's. GREAT knives but man it's hard to wrap my head around a 400 dollar pocket knife. I was so worried about losing it.

I haven't had a Benchmade in my pocket for a while now. I've also never had anything with M390. I'm highly considering this knife though as I think the mini grip is a great EDC option.

I'm very tempted to also get a mini ritter, but right now unless I can sell my Boye folder, I'm too tight on funds to be able to get it. With that said, I went for the large one first, as a main carry, blade isn't that large and the handle shape and size seems about perfect.

I did alot of cutting today with the M390. So I just wanted to give a run down while im finishing off this late night by the fire. Here are a few of the tasks it was used for.
-zip ties
-cutting directly though copper wire and two extension cords for repair. Stripping as well
-scraping PVC pipe to remove burrs before cementing
-2"blue board for sound proofing, approx 100ft of cutting distance;)
-thick clam shell packing and lots of cardboard
Then I make marshmallow sticks for the whole family and cut up a bunch of kindling

The edge held up amazingly and came back to life easily on the green strop. No edge damage, rolling or chipping and still shaves just fine.
My main point here is that this steel is tough as nails. Edge retention is great, but the sheer durability of the steel just puts a smile on my face.

How hard is it to sharpen M390 with ceramic stones? Is it more difficult than, say M4?

I completely agree. But not if using diamond and the right compounds. With that I notice no difference in ease. I found m390 can be sharpened with a plain ole true hard Arkansas stone.

M390 is easier to sharpen than m4 in my studies

I gave up on using Arkansas stones for high chromium stainless, since it seemed much easier with Spyderco Ceramic stones. It is nice to know that I can use them on M390. I have been reserving my Norton and Dan's stones for woodworking tools in high carbon steel.

I had given up too. I always have my pocket sized translucent with me for my traditionals. I had beat up the edge on the m390 and I just have it a try. Glad I did. Very good results. Not going to use it all the te. But in a pinch.

I'm rather impressed with the utility of the Ritter shape, and the m390. I finally managed to take the shaving edge off it cutting a corrugated cardboard box that had had rocks and shells sitting in it for probably 15 years. Still cut aggressively, just wouldn't shave. Think I may have to get another.

Nice, I'm seriously thinking of also getting a Mini to go along with my large Ritter, folks on here that own both, do you prefer one over the other? I know it's not an easy question probably, but hey, I'm curious ;)

IMHO, mini is a bit too small for me to have a firm grip on the handle. Although I have not tried DOAT "Death Grip" G-10 handle, so I can not state "Mini is too small in any way.", but to say stock handle feels a bit slipply to hold on to.

Some has a reservation in grivory stock handle with full sized Grip, but I feels it is adequate. Of cause I may be biased, because I have changed with 551-1401 G10 GrBk handle soon after. As usual, YMMV.

I prefer the mini.

I think many go for the regular Grip because they feel the Mini will be to small... I have big hands, and have used Minis since they first came out in 440C.
A few years back I decided I would give the full size Grip a look, so I headed to the local Sportsmans Warehouse.

Nope. Wasn't happening. It has a totally different feel than the Mini, because it doesn't have the full liners like the Mini, which gives it a more solid feel.
That, and in all honesty, I've never felt I needed a bigger knife. There have been quite a few here that had the same sentiment going from a Mini to a full size Grip.

Of course not everyone feels that way. I am curious to see your thoughts going from the full size to a Mini.

I've been toying which one to get. The mini or the full size. I've had a few full size grips in the past and while I think the are a GREAT knife they were just too wide for me to EDC them daily. Now, I wouldn't mind having a full size to use for harder work that I would only carry occasionally but I don't want to carry one everyday. Whenever I buy a new knife I have to fight the urge to buy the big knife. I naturally want to but I hate carrying heavy/bulky knives.

So...I just bought a Mini-Ritter. I hope I dig the M390 steel.

The more I use mini grips, the more I can feel the perfection of they EDCness.
Really! I'm getting addicted to them!

Nice, good thing they don't wear out too fast, otherwise it would be an expensive addiction to keep up with, of course, buying scales for each will also keep that need growing ;)

And buying custom scales doubles the perfection (and the price as well :D)

I miss just two that are not in this picture
