best knifes under 10 dollars

Under $10 the pickings get quite slim. Most of these are a few dollars more. Of course, $2-5 extra dollars here is +20-50% on the price, so maybe these don't count?

  • The stainless Bahco branded Mora companion is available online for ~$9 with free shipping. Great deal this one.
  • Opinels are found for under, or around $10 every so often. I love them, great cutters, great sharp spine for striking fire steels (or smoothing a carving, making fine shavings, etc), and are lightweight. They tend to be ~$12-16.
  • Old hickory 7in butcher. They run ~$9-11. Its a simple but solid 1095 knife with a pretty good HT. No sheath though.
  • Svord peasant mini. They come a bit rough, but can be had in the ~$12-15 range, and are again a simple but excellent carbon steel.
  • Victorinox paring knife. Not a rough use knife, but otherwise a perfectly serviceable little knife. Cost $7-10.
  • Opinel 112. Same as above. Effectively a fixed blade version of the opinel folder (the handle is smaller though). I've seen the two pack for under $20, and the single blades for $7.

Thats about all I can think of that are worth it in the "bargain basement" price range. None of them are fancy though, and most aren't "flashy" or "cool". They all get the job done though, and I'd trust them for what they are (ie, within their design limits/purpose). Otherwise, I agree with other posters. The options get much better starting around $20-35.

SAKs and Opinels are pure inexpensive fun, I just got all these for $30

great for spending some time modding and tuning them up without caring if you mess up!

Victorinox paring knife. Decent knife, great to practice sharpening with.

Best knife I can think of for that price would be an SAK, provided you shop a certain auction website.

Stanley aluminum handle folding box cutter with replaceable blades. I carried one at work for years. It did the job admirably.

I don't have a favorite knife under $10. But if you can refrain from eating fast food for a few days, you'll have about $35 bucks, at which point things get interesting.
This. I have found most knives at that price range are garbage,

This. Opinels cut better that many kitchen knives, and leave the average "tactical" folder in the dust. It's a two-hand opener and is about as un-cool as you can get, but when there's things to be cut you'd be hard pressed to find anything better.

They come in almost any size imaginable, fat or slim handles, or unfinished handles so you can carve it yourself. The basic ones usually go for $8-$12, but you can get fancier woods or fillet knives or whatever if you want to spend more.

Actually, plenty of Spydercos cut as well or better than Opinels. I'd put my PM2 against an Opinel all day long. And after about five minutes, when the soft-steeled Opinel lost its edge, I'd just keep on going with the PM2.

I know folks love their Opinels, but we really need to start understanding that there are actually plenty of knives which cut just as well (and better). It's not all ZTs or Medfords with obtuse cutting angles and a seventeen-inch thick crowbar blade out there, alright?

All the kitchen knives I own will out cut an opinel and most will hold a better edge and a few will hold an edge 10x longer. If your kitchen knives can't out cut an opinel you are doing it wrong.

Tend to agree. I've got a great handmade knife from my home state. The Amish are good at making cutlery. ;)

Then again, I've never used an Opinel for food prep.

Thank you Sir for speaking out what I wanted.

hey pals! just wondering what your favorite knifes are under 10 bucks. i was just looking at a budk catalog that a buddy of mine pulled up and i was amazed at how many selection there are in it. so many options! i was looking at picking one up but i can't decide! :) i know there are a lot of good ones but i wanted to hear yours opinion on which on is best that i should get. the timber wolf assist rescue has been really catching my eye. seems like a lot of knife for the money. anyone here got one? is it as cool as it looks in the picture?

thanks.
There are good knives for under 10 dollars but that was never their retail price.

I usually experience a brief period of buyer's remorse regardless of whether I spend $10.00 or 500.00 on a knife. One exception was the purchase of a 15.00 Mora. It simply cuts

SAK Classic. One of the most practical EDCs ever made for the average person, and often $10.
