Best Spyderco SD?

Dragonram7- Know what you mean, I retired early also for the same reasons.

I did not mean to paint martial arts with such a broad brush, structured training is important for basic skills and discipline, but those instructors who
train people who daily go into harms way the same way they do their kid and "bored housewife" classes are doing a disservice to their art.

Academy basics give an officer a platform to work from, time on the street and with brother officers adds to that, but learning how to stay alive in a confined space or ground situation against one or more determined attackers requires an amount of animal ferocity and determination to survive that most MA cannot and will not teach. And using a knife in your defense has alot of mental and social stigma not to mention the abuse at the hands of a lawyer during the courtroom circus that will surely follow. All of these things need to be addressed.

I won't even adress the administrative BS, this is a family forum. Officers in this day and age need training in situational awareness not political correctness.

Sorry, I'll shut up now.

Thanks for your experience. That's what the thread is all about.
Before I forget
I found a local dealer (no shipping:thumbup:), Let me know if the prices are good?
Police $75.99
Military $92.99
Chinook III $ 102.99

Endura $42.99

Re. the video: The assailant was a homicidal/suicidal psycho with an 8-10" bowie. I don't suppose anyone here imagines that the cops, obviously in neither a homicidal nor suicidal mindset, would have done better if they were armed with folding knives (say, for the sake of argument, a 4" CS Voyager...) rather than firearms?

I'll keep my Glock 36, thanks.

It's pretty bad when you find yourself yelling at the computer screen; "Shoot him, Shot him". Thanks for the video.

My top vote is for the:

MILITARY period.

Now listen as I play the 1995 Windows version of Microsoft's:

TAA TAA! Just kidding.

I can't honestly believe the cutting power of the Military (full serrated)
even over my SS Police; which is way too heavy (I call it the police pounder).

The Chinook is a fine looking knife but the 6 ounces is 50% heavier than the MILLIE.
The Police (in G-10) has a great looking blade but the MILLIE cuts better for me.
The Civilian looks like a total SPECIAL purpose knife - which it is for Self Defense.

I JUST like a light tool that works and has more bang for the buck - like my 5 Glock 23s.

One more for the Military. Let me know if the prices I posted were good. Military was locally $92.99(S30V) and the Endura 4 is $42.99. Military in second place with the endura behind the Police. That for the post.

the cops in that video were overconfident. they figured the dude wouldnt dare attack them because they had guns and outnumbered the guy.

the surrounded the guy with guns lol.....thats a big no no, cause now you cant open fire cause you may hit your buddy.

and even when they finally opened fire, the werent able to get the bad guy at first. he took out 1 more person even after they opened fire cause in their state of panic they werent able to hit the guy who was running around.

I do think handguns are vastly over rated when compared to knives for close combat.
There main advantages are you can keep some distance which is not an issue with close combat(hence the term close). The other advantage is you don't need the strength or the mental stamina it takes to stab a human.
I would suggest going to work on a farm and slaughtering some animals with a knife. When you can do that quickly without any hesitation then you will be closer to being able to fight effectively with a blade. It is not easy ,even serial killers have hesitation marks. I puked when I first saw it done to a sheep.

In my misspent youth I was in a couple of knife fights from either side (twice where I defended myself with a knife and once when I was attacked). It is a LOT harder than it seems in the dojo.

I really like the idea of bead blasting the Police. That is a great idea for looks and can just be redone when scratched.

The best knife instruction for a beginner I think is Kill or Get Killed by Col Applegate.
You can get it free on PDF from Stevespages.

Mercop ,Emerson ,Keating and Wagner are all practical experts in the field.

Reverse grip sucks.

Those are all great prices.

EBAY might have them for less "IF" you know how to SNIPE them at the bidding end (when the bidding actually ends).

Wait for about 30 seconds to the end of the bid - THEN and bid the highest price you'd pay (figuring everything) and remember to figure in shipping and check out the INTEGRITY of the seller too! ;)

Good SNIP(E)ING! ;)

I am kind of late to this party, but my current job description reads similar to yours Sir and the BK6. I would say to keep in mind the overall picture of your job description. When you evaluate your tools and speaking now from l.e.o and protection background, one trick ponies are appealing until you match it with the job. I will narrow it a little bit. The only thing you have is your objective. Gun, stick, knife whatever are just tools that you may have at hand to get the job done. There is too much emphasis on one or the other. In a extreme close quarter scrap, the differences are negligent at best.

I have had great success with the folder in a closed position as oppose to carving my way through a crowd!:o The folder should shine in the closed as well as open position. That may narrow some of your choices. It does not make it a bad knife, just matching what you need for your job. If it is the kind of work that I think you are referring to then being able to safely guide or change someones channel or get your folks from point a to b with the option of going lethal if need be is a win win.

If you are not already palming it(situational awarness), then you want to make sure you can access it quickly. If you chose the waistband upfront, with a sturdy belt, you will have no problems waving, but those who know me will not believe I am saying this, but the wave is not paramount for protection work(though it has its advantages), your folder will be more for a fistload to lethal as far use of force continuum. Sorry so long, but a pop to the sternum or another bony area or redirecting quickly is where you should start.

It's a close race:
Police-8
Endura and Military-7
Chinook is the next closest at 5
If there is a tie for a winner, I might have to buy two.

I like the Endura for the durability, clip adaptability and availiability of a trainer. I use SCDU for the selection of tools. Selection, Carry, Deployment and Use. Using a knife against a human is no big deal since steel cuts flesh pretty easy. The hard part is knowing when and how to deploy the blade especially under stress. Even more so with a folder. For a primary defensive folder I only like tip down folders carried in the strong side pocket, drawn closed into a hamnmerfist grip and then opened if you need to. I have a little traditional MA training when it comes to edged weapons. I think very little of it transfers to the street. In the street it at least starts out as open hand vs knife. Those odds suck, they suck more if that is not what you train for.
