BF survival forum knife.

Definitely love the idea of a sharpener, but everyone would have to agree on the same one. Another thing I have done is glue a small DMT sharpener right on the back of the sheath.

The flat grind on Nick's knives above looks super sweet to me. They look tough, but like they're good slicers.

I pretty much only do flat grinds, so if you guys want me to do these it would be a flat ground knife. Sorry if that seems too limited, but I personally feel that the flat grind is the way to go as with a convex one would probably need a belt sander to sharpen the edge and a hollow grind (like already stated) may be to thin to handle light to medium chopping tasks. Some may disagree with me on that but I guess, thats my opinion and you know what they say about those.

In regards to thumb notches I have been using a checkering file to produce a fine yet sharp pattern on the spine. It is not too sharp, but just enough to give grip or allow for a good striker.

Nick:)

Works for me, most of my favorite blades are flat ground. Also if someone had the tools and patience, they could profile an edge to convex.

I think I did see those small thumb grooves on the spine of one of your knives. I have some similar on other knives and they really bite into a sparker and throw a mean shower.

I love your knives man. I would love to have one even if we dont use is as the BF survival knive. That leather sheath and firesteel on page 3 would look amazing with your blades.

This is a great idea guys. I'm working up a design and was considering a finger choil, Is that something that would be a little to much to handle for an independent knife maker??

Not at all, they can be ground in with round files or a dremel with a sanding drum (much faster). Like most things, the trick is in keeping it straight and square. Anyone who can do a reasonable flat-grind can do a choil also if they want/need to, skill-wise.

Nothing wrong with sticking what you like or do best. Your reasons are sound, and it shows integrity to insist on making knives the way you think they should be.

I'm really getting used to convex edges; I don't make them too radical and sharpen them pretty much normally, with stones, so they actually have a micro-bevel on them (I think that's what you call it). Grinding the convex smoothly and evenly is a fun skill to learn, I'm going to stick with it till I get real good at it. I'm happy to say that my machete now cuts like a Mora. But my flat-ground knives cut just fine, too :D

I'm open to blade shape and design. I just wanted to state, the flat grind thing. If someone has a design they like, please post it or e-mail me, and I should have no problem making it.

Nick:)

Flat grind = easy to work with. I'll cast another vote for the flat grind. I like simple.

Things are shaping up nicely here! And so quickly!

I like these. Either one would be a great initial template. Now if Nick could add some wire-breaker saw teeth, a hollow handle (still retaining a one-piece design, of course), and some removable pins that can be screwed into the pommel to make a field-expedient sling shot, then I'd say we would have a winnar!

HA HA!! Just kidding all! Seriously, I'd be interested either of the pieces in the photo above, or something similar on those lines. Simple and plain, yet elegant and functional.

I think this is a GREAT idea and definately if our knife happens to be one of the ones hikeeba posted!! Preferably 3" blade is my vote and I like the idea of having a DMT and firesteel loop.

UH-OH, you had me scared! Lol. Yep the type of designs above is what totally had me thinking that Nick is the man to make this.
I honestly can't think of too much else to add to them to make them better, but some slight mods just to make it a little different and stand out as the BF knife would be cool.

The only other thing I was leaning toward was the slightly bigger one on the bottom. I know it would cost a little more, but I think right at a 4" blade would be optimal. But, since Nick already offers more than one size in that basic pattern, maybe those who wanted the shorter version could choose that instead.

I'm in. Unless my wife reads this anyway. I would prefer the smaller of the two but either will do just fine.

All right! We are getting quite a few people on board here :D
By the way, I shot Spark an email to see if this was all cool with him.

Maybe a more rounded handel instead of having a bump where you middle finger goes?

As much as I like the 3 inch, I will go for a 4 if it doesn't cost too much more.

Maybe for once and for all we can stop the "what's a bushcraft knife" discussion here.

Can we get a little bladeforum logo in there somewhere?

Can we have the shealth till about 45 degree to the front weak side carry? I would love to have this around with me, but if it sit straight it might dig into my ass while in the truck.

"Can we get a little bladeforum logo in there somewhere?"

I was wondering that too, and that's also why I wanted Spark to be cool with it first. Even if not a logo, maybe B.F.W.S.S (Blade Forums Wilderness Survival Skills) stamped on it or something.

This already is shaping up to be a knife I'd carry with me all the time! Whether or not I had a bigger knife or hatchet on me, the size of this one will make it so easy to always have on my belt. Add a means of starting fire right on the sheath, and you're set!

This is really taking shape. Do you guys want to stick with the smaller knife or the larger one? I see it may be runnin 50-50. But which larger one the Scout or the Sportsman? ( Sportsman is what I call the one in the pic. with two knives)

There is a funny little story about the Hunter/Skinner I feel I must tell at this time.

I had originally named that knife the "BF Hunter", but it stood for something else. It stood for Buck Fever Hunter. See, my brothers and I were hunting a few years ago, ( it was when I came up with this design) and Clint and myself were sitting together on our last hunt of the week long trip. I had shot a nice size doe early on in the evening hunt so we were quietly conversing on what I should name this knife. A whole bunch of names got thrown around that night but one name stuck after what was about to happen.

My brother and I had agreed that if a buck were to present itself, he would get to shoot. Well.... a nice 8 point was hot on a does trail and was heading straight for us. We both pulled up our guns, and he started to breath quite heavy, and said, it's mine. I, said ok no problem. As this deer worked it's way closer my brother started to loose his composure, I mean big time. I've never seen Buck Fever like he was showing. Well this deer was aprox. 15yrds. away when I said if you don't shoot I am gonna. He couldn't even speak, but somehow mustard up the juice to squeeze the trigger. The 12ga slug was in flight, with a ROAR. The deer took off like a shot, and I thought he had missed but the 8 point fell about 20 yrds away.

After the shot was over, he picked up the two way to call our other brother, and was shaking and breathing so bad I busted out, I have got the name.
BF Hunter- Buck Fever Hunter. He tried to play it off as if he was all cool but he knew he had it bad. We still laugh about it today.

I never thought I would post that but I felt it was needed.

Sorry if my writing was hard to follow.

Nick:)

LOL, that's pretty funny! It would be cool to base your knives names on stuff that happens in the field while using them (especially if your brother is involved :D)

To be honest, any of the three knives of yours we've listed would be fine by me. If we nailed down how many guys are in on this, maybe we can take a vote, at least get the size we'd like. Then we could start working on other details.

Should we start a seperate thread to see who is in for one and what size they vote for? Or post it in here? I dunno, I'm new at all this :)

Have we nailed down a relative cost range? Was something like $125 suggested?

Whether or not I can get in on this depends a bit on the timing, money will be short for a little while for me!
