BF survival forum knife.

Hi guys, I have been watching ever since I posted the first time. I would be more than happy to offer suggestions, some may disagree with what I have to say, so I pretty much just sit back and read, as I don't want to get into a urination contest over blade shape and grind type. I have posted how I feel about this project, and I'm all for it.

I hope that didn't sound harsh, if it did that wasn't my intention:)

Nick

oal:8.5"
blade:4"
steel:1095-easy field shapening
full tang
green micarta slabs
convex edge is the best
blade thickness:.170

Again here is mine opinion:

I want a 4" blade, O1 carbon Steel, and green micarta handle, a leath neck sheath with FireSteel loop. 1/8" stock thickness. the spine on the blade needs to have nice 90 degree square edges to be able to spark a FireSteel. Scandi grind is a must for woodcraft. The Blade should be marked with a simple BF07 ( BladeForums 2007)

The Scandi grind is a choice for you - not a universal truth. Two things to remember for this project: 1) Woodcraft (while significant) is not 100% of outdoor knife work and 2) This is a collaboration between members with vastly different expectations of what it will do in the end- we all must be willing to flex a bit in regards to some design features.

I think that 1/8" is a good compromise for cutting efficiency (I would personally prefer 3/32" but...); Something like Micarta is preferable as it is stable, strong with some character/ figure, good grip when wet (but the blaze orange sounds good too), flat grind that can be modded somewhat by the end user if they desire (ex.convexing). I think that the leather sheath is a good idea with the firesteel/ sharpener combo as it is quiet, unassuming to sheeple, and adds a traditional look. 3.5" - 4.5" length seems small enough yet big enough to do the tasks we will require of it.

Not trying to impose my opinions too much; I am just trying to look at this from many angles- not just what I want.

Whether y'all realize it or not, you've entered the mysterious and maddening realm of marketing. No way in heck can you please everyone... that's (partly) why there's so many half-vast knives on the shelves.

Does anyone know what the RAT-3 blade thickness is. That is the perfect thickness for this type of knife imo.

gunknifenut, could I get you to post some more photos of the sheath?

I would love to see the back, and from the underneath looking up.
I want to know how the little pocket thingy is attached and how it works...

Allan, here is one better, I can still give you more pics tomorrow, but here is a scetch of the sheath as I built it, or all the parts. The pouch is sewn to the back of the pouch before closing the pouch. the front edge is sewn into the main seam. the snap is a long loop that is folded from the bottum.
Also, there is also a scetch I whipped up on the Computer, I think this is about what I see evolving here....I like the forward belly on the handle for carving and inverted grip slicing. I hope you guys like it. Gene EDIT: now looking at the scetch...lol Allan or anyone else for that matter, the compass pouch has to be reversed to work, I scetched it backwards, the long side raps the pouch around back.

Here's a knife I made a while back. I can't make it but you're all welcome to use the design. :)

Although I personally also would favor the scandi grind, I agree with you that the knife will have to be a compromise to what all of the people here wants.
If it does turn out to get the scandi grind - I'll be a very happy chappy indeed!!!
If it doesn't - I'll have to bow to the majority preference.

The consensus seems to break down into two camps; The guys who want a Scandi, and the guys who want more of a standard utility style.
I'm all for both styles, I have both types and like them.

Regardless of what we can come up with for a forum knife, I'm working with Nick on a design that I think will be my go to blade on all my trips to the woods. His designs really speak to me, and he seems like a helluva nice guy. In a month or so when I have it in my hot little hands, I'll post pics and see what you guys think of it.

Otherwise, I am still in on a forum knife. I still haven't heard from Spark though. I wanted his input on it, and whether we could use a logo or reference to BF. If not, it can still be an "unofficial" forum knife.

Ray's knife above looks like another great style. I'm really leaning toward something like that.

I'm with tknife. I will be happy with either style. I'm personally more interested in the grind being flat ground, with a distal taper to the tip. O1 seems to be a very good option that will keep cost down without forgoing quality. 1095 would fit the bill as well IMHO.

Maybe we should go with a poll.

I agree on the poll idea, although we may have to do several polls in order to narrow things down. We may have to do polls to figure out what to put on the poll!

Funny:D  I created one. May need to expand it. If you can't place a vote (your idea is not listed) just a short statment on what you would like to see would help.

Why not something a bit more manly? lol. 6 inch, forged W2 with convex edge, a bit over 3/16ths thick, NS hardware with the buttcap screwed onto the htreaded tang, African blackwood handle wih a Sullivan sheath made for a 6 inch Randall Model 1.

I just had another thought, maybe we could add in a dollar amount or percentage to the cost, and donate it to BF? That would make it a forum knife that also gives back to the place we love here.
