BF2020 Blade Etch

Alright, this is the last one I’m doing for now. Some of you suggested a thinner border on the letters (or “no black background”), so here’s an (even rougher) approximation of what that would look like. (Sorry, the more I mess with the logo, the worse it’s going to look.)

Looks like a winner to me. Would be nice to be a hair smaller or raised enough that the bottom 2020 lined up with the bottom of the viper logo. Just nit picking though... it looks good otherwise.

I tried (approximately) to make the height of the smaller letters in BladeForums the height of the entire Viper logo, with the tops of the B and F extending above, and the 2020 below. Otherwise I think it would look too small compared to the Viper logo.

As you can see, I was off by a little, but not too bad. :D

I think you did a bang-up job with the mock-up. :D

Seriously.

I like this version, but I think I like the original, darker version better.... but I'm ok with either. Great job!

I'd vote for that. Great work.

Thumbs up on this one, this is the best understated Blade etch, this would of even looked good on the tang if possible.

Perhaps I misinterpreted Mike's suggestion (post 78), but my read on it was to add the logo portion only of the Viper etch - sans text. That acknowledges them, while keeping the emphasis on it being the forum knife. It also reduces the overall size of the etching by about a third.
Take the rendering shown in post 103, crop it right in front of the V...and see if you agree with him. (Obviously, I do)

Quick and dirty crop on my phone

Mike, could that be done on the ricasso/ tang, opposite (or with) the M390?

It probably could. Just not sure I want to ask them to create two etches for two locations. And to be honest I don't really want to risk offending them by changing their etch.

I will have a conversation with them when they get back and see what the options might be.

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

I was still favoring the darker outlined version, too, but the lighter one has grown on me. I think it’ll look really sharp if we can get the thickness of the outline/bordering around the letter to match (or at least come close to matching) the lines on the Viper logo.

No, I think you interpreted it correctly. I stated with the first one I posted that I knew it wasn’t exactly what Mike had suggested. He had requested the BF logo with “Viper’s snake head just behind it.” I wasn’t sure if he was talking about a different logo they had (like the one at the top of Viper’s website) or just the tongue part of the logo already on the knife. So I just went with the logo as it already existed in the photo I was working with.

Wouldn't it mesh a bit more if the Bladeforums lettering were filled with the same grey hue as the viper lettering? Nice looking etch for sure.

Eric

I completely agree, and I actually tried to do that, but after altering the logo to thin the outline, then scaling it down to put it on the knife for that last mockup, it became so pixelated that when I tried to fill it with the same color from the Viper logo, the fill bled through a gap and turned the whole picture grey. :D

(This is a perfect example of why it needs to be a vector graphic.)

(I should also mention that I’m not actually using Photoshop, but rather a photoshop-knockoff app on my phone. It works well for some things, but certainly has its limitations.)

It just occurred to me that the blade has to be marked with country of origin. So Barrett's may be the better solution.

Email or PM me the last version and I will check with Viper when they get back from holidays.

Email sent.
