Bill Bagwell Knives

Masterduck,
did you go to the link that Kevin posted? It has some very interesting reading.

I posted some more questions above in regards to this since I'm trying to figure it out and my metalurgical knowledge is weak to say the least!

i totally agreed, but i am just saying this from my experience... i will get some pic any maybe folks here can tell us.

Hi masterduck.
I don't have time to address the questions at present, but as stefanj suggested this topic was discussed at length by very knowledgeable practitioners of both forged carbon and pattern welded steels on the previous thread (link below).
I believe you will find answers there. If you still have questions or comments, I would resurrect the thread for additional discussion as I'm afraid this damascus vs carbon steel discussion is taking this Bill Bagwell thread WAY off course from where the author intended it to go.

The carbon steel vs damascus discussion is always an interesting one and there's sure plenty knowledgeable folks here on the subject. :)

Nah no prob, Joe will come along soon and we'll keep talking about the beauty of Bagwell knives think I've another twoish weeks to wait for mine :D. Go quicker time :P. In many ways its bit stupid of me to buy a Bagwel cos they are pure bred fighting knives and I can't carry, legally :P, anything of that size on my person. Such a shame.

Take it camping, go bear fighting:D:D

I would carry it just to carry it on some packing trips/back woods as well as other places but that is just me. Of course i would try and arrange a packing trip just to justify carrying it!

Yea I'm usually a safe queen for the first year then decide to use my knives and end up wrecking them :D. This is my first custom knife ever. Some knife to start off with ain't it :D

Bagwell's cause alot of grief too. i want to carry it and have a few times but it is illegal. i would hate to have my most prized possesion taken away from me but i equally hate leaving it at home:grumpy::p

Yea tis the way of the world. Never changes. :D Would love to be able to walk rond with a beautiful practical knife on my belt. The way it should be. :D

I am not telling anyone to break the law but I carry what ever knife I want. You basically have to treat it like a handgun where proper carry clothing and not carry it when out drinking and getting into bar fights. Point is do not flash it around and do stupid things when you are carrying . Just like a handgun. I have a carry permit for a gun but that does not cover a large knife. In my state I could actually carry this blade as long as I do not conceal it and could say a legit reason something outdoors. I carry large knives concealed and do not do things to draw attention to myself and or break the law to risk a search. I think they would be more interested in my gun than knife.

Yea I was thinking I might have been treading a fine line cause I know the British Blade Forum is very strict on law matters. Yea I carry my slipjoint everywhere cos it is handy and I have no need for a huge bowie when I am about my business during the day. If I did I prob would. Afterall it is a tool as well as a devasting fighting impliment.

Just to let yas know Bill sent me an upate this morning. He finished the blade and tested it. He will hopefully have the guard and all fitted and the sheath made this weekend and all :D. Can't wait !!!

i know you will get us some pics right;)

after talking to Bill about blade lengths he made the comment that he always does one blade at a time start to finish except for one time when he was working on a couple at once. one had a longer blade than the other. he said he never realized it until they were side by side that the longer blade is also wider to balance it out. this means it is quite a bit heavier.

when i asked Bill to make my damascus safe queen with a 12 1/2" blade he said he would do it but it would be too heavy for even him to wield. i figure a guy that swings a forging hammer would be pretty strong so i dropped the length back down to 11 1/4"---11 1/2" to be safe.

i bet your bowie will be quite a bit bigger than Joe's. here is a link to Pete Kautz's website. this bowie dwarfs mine which has a 10 1/2" blade.

Pootsy Just talked to Bill and he said your blade turned out great and that he is fitting the guard tomorrow. We talked more about recent hunts but we touched on the carbon damascus question and he gave me some input. All I know is that you are getting one bad ass knife and you should be psyched.

Did you share on the carbon damascus question? and when will someone post pictures?

In Bill's opinion the properly forged carbon blade will be tougher and the properly forged Damascus blade will cut meat (flesh) better. I imagine it is the toothyness (if that is a word) of the damascus that causes this. He did not elaborate and I do not like to post or represent someone elses opinions on a public forum. ya just get in trouble that way.

Thanks, and I can respect that!

I honestly doubt someone like me or anybody else for that matter would ever be able to tell a difference in performance of the two!
