"Black Box" Winchesters

Sleek and slim 2967 from '88. Kinda purty.

I came across this thread when SAKguy started posting photos of his new acquisitions. As I went through the previous pages of the thread, the model above - 2967 - caught my eye. (MerryMadMonk's outstanding group shot was also a photo I kept coming back to.)

It's not something that I usually go for: too long at 3 7/8", the blades looked too slim, I prefer a small secondary, bone never really appealed to me, etc. But, man, what a looker.

I tracked one down online. The vendor had a no return policy, which is usually a big no-no for me, but I took a chance. It came it today, and it is indeed lovely, and surprisingly substantial in weight despite it's sleekness. No photos from me yet, but sometime soon hopefully. There are some superficial issues (blades not centered, and a small ding in the shield), but I was aware of those from the photos. What I didn't see was the gap at the outside pivot end of spear main; the end pin was not tapped in snugly. As a result, the spear wobbles from side-to-side pretty badly (imo).

I don't have a vise, nor do I trust myself to try to tighten this myself. So this will be put aside until I can track someone down who can do it for me. Usually a situation like this would really sour me on a knife, but I'm looking forward to being able to throw this in my pocket at some point in the future. And anyway, there are far worse things in life!

I'm really sorry to hear this buddy....... :(

Robert, I think you are going to amass all the remaining stock of these!

Thanks for your commiseration, but no worries. You'll be happy to know that my alox Pioneer Settler is keeping me company in the meantime.

Y'all have got this thread heated up! Good deal.

SAK, that 125th Anniversary also comes in Sterling Silver handles. I believe less than 500 were made. Something else to watch for ;)

3995 Whittler in Dark Brown Jigged Bone and Yellow Smooth Bone (looks like GEC's Rotten Banana Bone... once again, I see the hand of Bill Howard).

Some beautiful knives in 1095 , I really like the sowbelly and a couple of others . So far I've been sticking to Case and GEC but it looks like there's a Winchester in my future . Thanks for the pics .
