BLADE SHOW 2011 Update Thread

Thanks for those pics Joe - and it was very nice to finally meet you in person. I'm glad you got a shot of that Hanson / Hogstrom collaboration - easily one of the more memorable pieces for me at the show.

It was good meeting Sam Lurquin as well - a great guy making terrific knives. He seemed to be soaking up every second of the show.

Roger

It was a pleasure to see John Lloyd at the show:

I have seen stag brought into the show in buckets before, but John brought stag AND slipjoint folders he has made to the show in buckets! John has been giving some of his folder work to kids with parental premission to promote custom knives, but started selling some at the show this year. They were a big hit! And, look at all of the nice stag!

Good to see you again, John.

Same here, Roger. A real pleasure to meet you.

Sam is a great guy, and he said his English would be much better by show time next year. He was like a big kid in a candy store, and enjoyed every second of the show, I believe.

Great shots, Joe! Enjoyed the trip with ya. Great food, company and all.

Yeah, was cool to see John selling all those slip joints so cheap. Just pile em up on the table.:D:cool:

WoW that pile of slipjoints is unbelieveable! John made these? where does he find the time and how come they are stacked up with the stag? How much were they?

Bruce, John is on the forums off and on. He may pipe in later on. John has been making folders for quite some time. I think he has the building part down (he does 8 to 10 a week when he stays after it). If he decides to take more time to concentrate on F & F, watch out! He dumped them out on the table out of Glad bags, and started writing prices on the bolsters. That might have to change, too. :D

He definately has plenty of handle material to go on them.

David, I can't see any of your pictures, I really want to. It says your band width is exceeded.

It was truly a great show, stock market be damned. I had a great time, and enjoy seeing the pictures here.

Hey Joe....dumping those slipjoints out of a plastic bag results in a good "tumbled" finish. Sold 160 knives....gave away 30 to kids. The giving to kids was much more fun than selling them! Time to get to work!! This time however, better fit and finish.....maybe.

Good for you!! You had better hit the grinder!

Lets see John, that'd be about 3-4 gallons of slip joints, right? :D

I was happy to get to meet Sam Lurquin at the show, up and coming maker from Belgium. I introduced Sam to Kyle and they really hit it off, language barrier and all.

Watching them study each other's work was a treat.

Congrats to Kyle for passing his MS test, and look forward to Sam's testing for JS next year in Atlanta.

- Joe

I wanted to correct this post...Sam will have a wait period to be able to take his JS test. All part of the language barrier process. Sam just informed me by e-mail that he was mistaken about being able to test next year. He is taking a class to improve his English and expects that to be much better in 2012. He has a bright future.

Thanks, Joe

Great thread with some wonderful pics! We had a busy weekend and it's always a blast catching up with friends and meeting new ones. Pretty much all of the makers I talked to said that they were having a good show with good sales. We definitely had the best show ever and I even came home with a new piece to add to the collection! My shoulder's still a bit sore from our neighbor(that danged Don Hanson) twisting my arm so hard that I finally had to give in and snatch up the little EDC he had on his table. Well...maybe that's not exactly how it went, but that's the story I told Susan to keep from getting my butt kicked:D It's always surreal for me to get a piece made by one of my heroes! The show was just great, and we're already counting the days until next year!

This year I was too lazy to bring a camera to Atlanta, but here a couple of shots taken today back home.

A gorgeous 10" OAL stag damascus hunter from Karl Andersen, JS. Made like a takedown, but then all glued up to be extra solid, this one has damascus fittings as well.

I also came away with a real user from Dave Lisch, JS. This one in forged W2 with hamon and wrought iron guard and butt. This one will taste blood come hunting season!
