BladeForums 2024 Traditional Knife

I’m sorry, I miss understood. It was actually @Matt_WY who first said “CNC jigging”. I got lost in all the complaining.
No harm done. I was just having a bit of fun. Just jokes, folks.

As I've mentioned in this thread, what appealed to me about the knife is that it is a large three-blade pattern by GEC. I've never had the opportunity to pick up one of those, so I'm excited. At the end of the day, I couldn't give a tinker's dam what covers it has on it as long as they're solid and well secured. I wind up using them all anyway and I don't expect this one will be any different. If in the highly unlikely situation that the covers pose a functional problem to me, I'm pretty good with tools.

Sorted :)

I humbly recommend to Spark that next year’s 2025 knife be an Opinel No. 6 in beechwood and stainless, and the inscription on the handle will read, “how do you like the 2024 BF knife now?”.
Stainless? Are you mad!? This is supposed to be the traditional forums knife! I'll salt the earth if it's not in traditional carbon steel!

And another thing: beechwood is for true peasants but my Great, Great, grandfather who carried an original Opinel had a peerage so I cannot fathom the insult of carrying peasant wood. Mine must be in polished yew.

AND FURTHERMORE...😁

I agree, I hunt deer and have them hanging around my house so I’ve never been that interested in having them on a knife as well (with a couple of exceptions).
Hmmmm a bit like me with that certain blade shape?? I love antler scales....cheers.

Paaaitencce Grasshoppers...is not the beauty of the painting truly t
revealed until the last stroke is brushed? But what would I know?

Are there any of these left? If so where's the preorder link? Thanks
I think based on what Spark said there should be around 200 left once the orders go live. The preorders are closed, but normal orders will go live eventually once Spark announces it. If you follow this thread you should be fine, plus there are quite a lot to sell still so you should have no trouble grabbing one when they open up again.

Thanks. I was hoping to grab one at $250. It's my own fault for waiting too long.

I don't need to throw my 2 cents in. But, I guess why not...

When I first heard GEC was making the city stock knives, I was through the roof excited. Maybe, just maybe, GEC would do a 3 blade stockman on the 81 frame. And, I'd have the chance of getting an 81 stockman once these 2 blades shipped. And then, blade forums announced the 91 stockman. Was it too large? It's a biggun. Would there actually be a 3 blade 81 stockman? Maybe, maybe not. What are the odds I'd land a 3 blade 81 stockman if they did exist? Slim. Was the 91 blade forum knife expensive? You bet. Would a 91 stockman be even more expensive and stressful obtaining one on the secondary market? Of course.

So, I put in my preorder for the blade forum knife. My concerns looking at the render was being unimpressed with the jigging, unimpressed with the color, and unimpressed with the shield. But, the shield was still to be determined. And, looking at other examples of jigged amber bone produced by GEC had me hopeful; granted the examples I found were labeled "ancient" jigged amber bone. Well, the shield I was hoping would be changed wasn't. The jigging is much larger and less random than I would've hoped. And, the color was much lighter than I expected.

BUT... guess what? There never was a 3 blade 81 stockman. And, I'm still getting a GEC 91 stockman without any stress of drops and without paying $350+ that most GEC stockmans seem to go for on the secondary market. Am I jumping for joy, oh my god this is the best thing since sliced bread? No... but, I'm still very excited to get this knife and am glad Spark is doing this for us. Maybe I'll darken the bone on my own, which I've never done before. Maybe I'll take a dremel to the bone to improve the jigging 😮 Maybe, just maybe 😅, I'll get it and be happy just the way it is!! 🤪

I'll sit back and enjoy the conversation 🍿 I don't think anyone is right or wrong here. It's okay to think we should wait and see. It's okay to think we're getting what was shown in the render. It's okay to be upset if it's not what you were hoping for.

tl;dr

I'm just joshing - jocularity all around! 🤣

It's a knife, and I like knives. Even kinda funny ones.

For example, this one has certifiably weird covers - it's hard to capture the full majesty in this light, but there are, like, mica chips, or something, in there and it really makes it more sparkly than I can adequately demonstrate here. Maybe tomorrow in the sunlight. In the meantime, imagine a bright lemon-yellow pearlescent bowling ball. 🤌

There's a moon over Miami, but it isn't helping with these pics. The Under-Microwave light will have to do...

Additionally, it's got a funky choice of shield (and for synthetic covers especially, not particularly well inset), what I like to call the "classic manhole cover." I guess it says things on it, but I can't read them - just a strange design choice in my book. And gold-toned, on yellow bowling ball, with nickel-silver bolsters... like I said, but maybe it's just me? 🎖️

While we're talking bolster engravings - check these out. This takes serializing the bolsters to an extreme I'd never encountered before!! Subtlety? Nuance? Heck NO! Make those numbers as big as the big ol' bolsters on a big ol' GEC 23 can tolerate! And make them thick too! When "064" whips out his daikon dicer, we want people across the street to be able to see who it is! 👀

But, you know, it's fine. It's a knife, and I like knives. A kinda funny one. I guess that kinda makes me like it even more. I'm sure I'll like this one too. I might even like it enough to bother poking fun at it. Who knows? 🤷
I used to have a pretty large NKCA knife collection. That 2012 club knife had skeletons made by GEC, and then sent to Painted Pony in Georgia run by Michael Prater. Michael creates the handle material there in his shop, he called it Sunshine Mica Pearl. He applied the handles, put in the round National Knife Collectors Shields, and did the bolster engraving himself. Also the laser blade etch.

I agree it's not the most attractive set of options when all combined together, but Michael did it all for free to donate his time/money to the NKCA to keep it going (which ended up going out of business in 2014.)
