Shifts and Expedients of Camp Life. Travel and Exploration.

A how-to manual written in 1876 by two Victorian explorers to help other would-be explorers plan their explorations into Terra Incognita. A fascinating book.
And their thoughts on pocket knife choice:

That sounds like a fascinating book, indeed. Thanks for sharing it.

Would you mind telling a bit about the knife you paired with it?

It's my Trevor Ablett barlow with rosewood scales. Since Mr Ablett sadly passed away I only ever carry this at home so I'll never lose it.

WhittlinAway, thank you for starting this thread.

I've been home bound for the past week due flu like symptoms, I had to work the weekend but only made one shift before having to trade it out. I thought I was better but no energy. So at home trying to get better, just a slow process.
I initially read this book way back in the early '70s, and certainly was the introduction to me about the various altered states of mind that a teenager often thinks about, maybe it was just me.:p:D There was no peyote in Hawaii. When we moved to CO. in the early 80's, I reread it. I am now contemplating reading again, with my body full of any number of cold remedies. I've already finished my 5 day course of Tamiflu. It is a great read despite some or many of the facts may have been conjured up. With Case CV Swaybackjack

donn, that looks like an interesting book, and I enjoyed reading the excerpt on cutlery.

So far I've read about building copper boats, making candles, casting rifle bullets for muskets and calculating powder charges for brass field cannon amongst many other things.

They ship worldwide including the US. As far as I can see at current exchange rates delivery to the US would be just under eight dollars. The above title is $35 but it is an inch and a half thick.

For any fans of military/exploration history the above company stocks a real range of titles. The usual disclaimer-no connection to them.
