Bm 710 m4??

distorted,

You should send that in to BM. I had a 710 years ago that had the problem you described with the blade hitting the backspacer. I sent it in and they fixed it.
I don't see why these blades get out the door. Reminds me of the BM of old, where the number of problem knives seemed so high that I would brace myself everytime I unboxed a new one. I kept buying them because I liked the designs. Later my impression was that the quality control improved a great deal.

Just got #297 from the UPS guy, guess I barely made the order. This is the first 710 I've owned and I really like the feel of the knife and the scales and it has a nice action in opening/closing. Hope somebody can come up with an easy adjustment for the cosed blade.

{edit} The thumb studs do rest on the scales and there is a mark where the blade edge contacts the backspacer. I cut a thin piece of paper and slid it in between the blade and the spacer with the knife closed and there is some clearance so the blade's not actually resting on the spacer. It must over-travel a little on closing and bump it enough to make the mark. The paper will not fit between the thumb studs and the scales when closed.

Received the two from Roger and Dana. Kudos to both of them and Benchmade for the project.

The 710 is a timeless design and the two I received, blade centered, super sharp, in fact, two of the sharpest Benchmades I've ever received.

The 710 M4 is a knife that will most probably outlive all of us. Super strong drop point, great recurve, easy to sharpen on a Sharpmaker and did I mention, M4 steel!

Benchmade I admit, could have built this with micarta and left it possibly uncoated. But what the heck, a top of the line knife!

My thumb studs actually make contact with the G10 when i close the folder. This is evidenced through two shiny areas on the G10 where the contact is being made.

Secondly, also when closing the folder, my blade actually makes contact with the underside of the backspacer. I can actually see the grrove in the plastic backspacer where the blade is cutting into it.

Thanks for pointing this out. I just looked and noticed the same thing on mine. #146 of 300 When I get home tonight, I'm going to look at my D2 710 and see if it has the same thing going on.

I think I can live with it. But if someone can convince me otherwise, that it's especially bad or dangerous to have these 2 defects, only then will I bother with sending it in for warranty. I just got the thing and don't want to send it away so soon.

I got #135.
Great knife, great quality, but... that one is my first 710, and I don't understand 710. Ares is the best.

Is that minor clip finish wear from carrying it?

I tried the little paper trick under the blade as suggested by HSJackson, and like his, there is clearance. So overtravel upon closing is probably the culprit.

Thanks for the advice AF, but I'm in the same boat as Bucktool, i just got the knife and these little things don't really affect the functionality of the knife so i'm gonna keep it for now. I carry all my knives so i'll just pretend it's pocket wear or something.

Still it sounds and reads like the knife was rushed to completion. I'm hearing about the blade hitting the backspacer inside, which it did on my 710BKD2 forcing me to use barrel spacers instead...

Then I'm reading about the spacer not being flush with the liners, and now the thumbstud hits the G-10, which should have been Micarta and with a satin blade...

Too many problems and changes is why I canceled my order and stand by the decision.

Mind you I'm a huge BM fan, I just don't like reading about all the problems and issues, although some are perfectly stoked with theirs!!

M4 stains so easily they were wise to go ahead and coat them. It's a fantastic steel that is one of the best blade steels I've ever used, but it does stain easily. Satin finish really wouldn't offer any protection from that.

Personally, I'm happy with mine. I wish I would have bought another. Joe

What's prettier? Marred BK coating or some stain or even better, a patina?

In this case I'd say marred BK coating. Better yet unmarred BK coating. M4 doesn't Patina very well at all. Joe

There might be a case or two or even a couple of 'issues' out of three hundred and most people know that so-called 'problems' mentioned on forums get multiplied exponentially with a new knife but from what I've read and seen with my own two 710 M4's, Benchmade's project was a good one... maybe not their finest, but certainly nothing to be ashamed of.

I counted three people in this thread who have the 710 M4 with a blade that hits the backspacer. That's not 3 out of 300. That's 3 in this thread. That doesn't count those with off centered blades (like mine) or the sloppily manufactured backspacer.

Fit is nice on mine... but finish is a little short. Its a user so I don't really care, but all these pix are straight out of the box.

I really like it, and I kind of wish I had ordered one, but what the hell were they thinking when they chose the font for the "Limited Edition 1 of 300"?

IMHO, doesn't fit the knife at ALL.

The font is the type one would see from someone who knows how th print in a legible manner.

I'm happy with mine, but I'm a big 710 fan.

One of my pet peeves is those giant LIMITED EDITION labels on knives like that. I don't see why they can't keep it subtle and humble. Nice looking knives though nevertheless. BM's green G-10 looks better than Spyderco's IMO because it's a bit more subdued.

I just got the call from KnifeWorks, and I landed an M4 710 after all...WoooHooo!

Evidently a few people that got on the list didn't take their knives so a few lucky ones like me who just missed out are getting a second shot.

I'm stoked! I hate missing out on an awesome knife deal, and the 710 is one of my favorites. You won't see this one on the Exchange.
