Just my two cents John, but I think that a polished or even ground nail nick looks washed out. I've done it both ways and I like the crisp look of a DARK nail nick better personally. With that said, I would rather have it black than brown........ but on that knife by that maker.........I don't think I would send it back! If you know what I mean.

Just my 1 1/2 cent for what ever it is worth. I think polished or cleaned off nail nicks are for the most part seen on really fancy knives like your are knives and folding daggers and so forth. I also think that on a tradional folding knife like a slipjoint or a lock back, dark nail nick look crisper and give it a more custom made look to the knife. I try to make mine as dark as possible by pulling the blade out of the foil wrapper as soon as it comes out of the oven to get.

A swell center Moose Pattern by Reese with Remington bone scales. This knife is 4" closed. You don't very often see this pattern.
