Breeden Knife Number Three, and some Firestarting Under Very Wet Conditions

This knife incorporates almost every single aspect I have ever wanted in a knife. If it weren't for badges, idiots, and sheeple I'd never take it off my belt.

Almost LOL . I am with ya on keeping my the Warthorn on your belt. I wish I could to but the paster of my church frownds on that LOL so my Warthorn gets put in
my bag LOL. Then after church I put that knife back on and then I am a Warthorn carring happy dude LOL

Yep...mine gets it's share of bag time too lol....I'll explain the almost in an email later.

I learned today that this knife, with the sheath and an Army Model Swedish firesteel weighs 21.4 ounces or 610 grams. This makes it one inch longer (over-all), and 2.1 ounces or about 60 grams heavier than my old S1 Bowie. Not really a noticeable difference in weight to me. I didn't weigh just the knife itself...wish I had thought about that at the time.

Hi all,

mistwalker thanks I never thought about wieghing them.

So what do you think this MEGA Warthorn:eek: wieghs in at?

here are some pics.

The Mega Warthorn by it self.

Then the Mega and my smaller Warthorn.

101_1973.jpg

I have it now with a forced mustard patina.

101_1980.jpg

I am going to take this Mega out today and play some. I will make up a new spear that I seen in a new survival book while at camping store this last weekend. I am going see how it makes up that spear that I seen and thought now that is slick I am going to make one up too.

Well anyways I will see how it does today while out on my walk with kelly Girl.

Bryan

Thank you very much LOL.

This one is in 3/16" with a 12" blade. and about a 5" handled. But the next one I make for me is going to be made out of 3/32" thickness and it would be just a nice light wieght cane cutting knife for clearing the cane that grows in with the milo or soybeans that we have here on the farm. Now for thicker brush the 3/16" does pretty darn good. I will have some more pics up later of what I did today with this MEGA Warthorn.

Bryan

Wow lol, that Mega could make Crocodile Dundee blanch!

How long do you leave the blade in the mustard to create a patina like that?

Man, now there is one that should chop great and has a good useable point too. That's really sweet!

Hi all,

Caine thanks.

Joben I put the mustard on and then left it over night. But you can do a couple of hours to. Some even put on severeal coats.

Ok here is what i have done so far the last couple of days.

First I made up a sheath for it. I put a small knife in front and then did the normal pouchs for a firesteel and then a ceramic sharpener.

101_2026.jpg

I wanted to make a spear but not just any spear so I made this kind op in stead it reqires a bit more carving I think then the normal ones that I make.

Ok I went to a area that is going to be cut of all locust trees. ( by this guy that has a tree cutting service named Breeden LOL)

I found one that I thought would work just fine and it was pretty straight too.

101_1987.jpg

Then I cut it down.

101_1988.jpg

Then I sliced off the outer bark with my MEGA as you can see in the pic.

101_1991.jpg

Now here is the interesting part of the tip of the spear I needed a Y.

101_1992.jpg

One thing about a longer knife is that when you are cutting around in a tree that has thorns it sure is nice cutting what I wanted not getting stuck. It is also nice to be able to carry that thorn covered Y back to my little camp.

101_1993.jpg

I skinned the bark and the thorns off and now it looks a little different would n't agree LOL

101_1998.jpg

Now that I have the Y peace debarked and the point sharpened some what.
I put some notches in both the Y and my shaft at the end as you can see in the pic.

101_2002.jpg

Well I attacted the Y to the end of my spear shaft , but instead of using 550 cord or some other typr of cord I used some good ole wire, I hope you all carry a least a little bit of wire in your kit.

101_2007.jpg

The nice thing about wire is that is will not burn when i put it in the fire to help dry out the wood and fire harden the tip.

I will show that in the next part.

Bryan

Hi all,

PART 2 of my spear making with the MEGA Warthorn.

To get my fire going I collected some wood and then split it up. in the next to pics I wanted to show what 20 chops looked like with the MEGA then my hatchet and then my Axe that I carry. Well I only did 15 chops with my axe in seasoned locust wood.

I thought the MEGE did just a little better than my hatchet and the aze of corse did way better. But with a longer knife like the MEGA I it really was way more veratile than my hatchet would have been. When you consider the thorns in the trees that I was cutting my spear parts from. I know from my own testing that my longer knives with out do my hatchet when cutting wood. but it will not oout do my Axe. and I was using my 24" S&N that I got from Brian Andrews.
101_2005.jpg

101_2006.jpg

Ok I also got some Walnut wood and split it up into smaller kindling peaces and then made a hand full of fuzz sticks with my MEGA Warthorn as seen in this pic.

101_2011.jpg

Then I arranged my fuzz sticks and kindling.

101_2013.jpg

I do not use matches persay I make mine up in camp. I took from my tinder capsule some cotton and pj mix and then wrapped that around a stick. as seen here.

101_2012.jpg

Then with my MEGA Warthorn and my firesteel I struck the steel and sparked the cotton to life shall we say as seen in this pic

101_2014.jpg

Then I lit one side of my fire lay and then the other side. I like suing that method to light fires it really keeps my finger from getting burnt by a short match. and when I put on enough cotton and pj mix I can have a match that will burn for a nice long time 1 to 2 minutes with the little that I put on .

101_2015.jpg

101_2016.jpg

Once I let the fire burn down some I had a noce bed of hot coals and then started to fireharden my spear tip. Like I said using wire for this instead of string really works great.

101_2020.jpg

Well this is what I did so far with my MEGA Warthorn. I have a few more pics but will post that later.

I am so far really happy with the MEGA and the sheath that I made.

So how is that for seeing what this MEGA Warthorn can do?

Bryan

Hi all,

PART 3

Well in this part I only have a before and after pic but here on the farm we have some plants that get pretty tall over the corse of the spring and summer and into fall. So I decided to make a path way throught some.

Here is the before and the after pics.

101_1981.jpg

101_1982.jpg

Well that was pretty easy.

Thanks for looking you guys and the kind comments on the
MEGA WARTHORN :D

As I us this knife in the upcumming days and weeks and years I will post some more pics of what I and the MEGA Warthorn do:D
