Broke my ankle

Sorry to hear that Gary .
I was hoping that it was a quicker more simple fix than that .
At least you know the enemy your fighting now and the uncertainty of the unknown is over .
Do what the experts tell you to do , that's why they are experts and you will be better before you know it .

Thanks guys, while waiting for the doc to come back, I took my wife's camera, which I gave her ;), and took a quick snap shot of the x-ray

The Fibula right at the base...here's a crop of that image.

Just back from Urgent Care, verdict? BROKEN BONE so they had to schedule an appointment for me at another facility, was going to be next Monday but got a call back that they can fit me in this Friday.

Doc says I'll probably need to have it pinned and maybe a plate, the smaller bone Fibula broke down near where it connects...ugh
Have a makeshift kind of brace and they gave me some crutches, which is also MUCH fun to try and use...

I'll report back a later. Thanks for the support guys!

It's cold comfort, but a broken bone is better then a damaged ligament or tendon. They heal faster and cleaner. Most of my breaks (8 to date) healed up without a problem, but soft tissue damage (both knees, left ankle) lingers for-freakin-ever.

EDIT: IANA doctor, but I broke my 5th metatarsalia the same way as your fibia, and it healed without a probem.

Well, they didn't rule out other damage, just fix the obvious and the rest will heal along too

Gary, by the time this is over, you will love those crutches. With crutches, you don't have to be a couch potato!

Heal up well. Now that you know what it is, healing is straightforward.

Gary I am sorry to hear about this mate. I hope that you are fully healed quickly and painlessly.
Best wishes from down south……….Steven

Hi Gary.

Rolled my right ankle off the edge of a sidewalk in October, heard the bone break, went down hard on my left knee and then toppled onto my right shoulder. Aggravated something in the right shoulder (arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis?) and bruised the left knee pretty good, irritating a nerve that provides sensation to the outer part of the thigh. X-ray showed fracture of fibula, on crutches and in an immobolizing boot. Did not want to use prescription pain pills due to concern about being woozy and falling down the stairs right next to the door to bathroom. Took ibuprofen instead, which might have been a mistake. Using non-steroidal anti-inflammatories seems to be a cause for a fracture to fail to heal with bone, called non-union of fracture. Supposed to be getting an electronic bone stimulator to promote bone replacing the fibrous scar tissue supposedly stabilizing the fracture.

This getting old is heck.

Ouch man that sounds very nasty, the doc did ask and checked my shoulders back neck an head to see if there was any collateral damage, certainly the time for it, I just said my pride was the only other thing that's hurt.

My wife is full of cheer, here we are on the verge of selling our house n moving and the best I can do is barely move my self!
She's reading things like at least 6 weeks to heal, it's depressing to say the least, but it is what it is, do as I'm told and things should come together.

When I was 14 I twisted my foot playing football in wet muddy turf. Hurt like hell. My buds kept saying "Walk it off!". Right.

Then I went into shock. Yup, broken ankle.

That looks nasty. No good deed goes unpunished. Dang.

Best wishes for a Summer recovery all well! Spring won't be easy.

Geez, G2 this can't be fun. I had a bit of experience with broken stuff, I'm betting you'll heal fine. First mistake was not having your wife carry the shingles!
Hope you get better real soon.

Geez, Gary. That's a tough one. Didn't come at a very good time either, they never do.

Heal quickly. Make sure your wife gets you a little bell that you can ring when you need her. They like that...

haha yes a little bell would be handy or a shock collar, one of the two.

Well, just got a call from my place of work, seems that they are of a mind that I'm to be placed on Disability until the doc says I'm able to go back to work, hopefully soon. I've been working from home and my job is such I can do just about 95% from here, but I guess that ain't enough for them to allow that. So they are severing my work accounts so I can't access them at all, fun stuff right? It wasn't easy sitting and working when I need my leg raised up higher, so it's probably for the best, but I sure don't like it !

Gary,
Good Luck on Friday, It will be good to get the surgery part over with.
It was probably better to get some of the swelling down first.
I hope that you have a smooth recovery.

There is some GOOD that this happened and it will be YOUR job to find it.
Sometimes we need a little nudge to go down a different road, enjoy the scenery, or at least look in the rear view mirror and see where we've been.
With spring coming, take some time to enjoy the flowers and trees in bloom.

Thanks Tim, good idea, I received a package today, was hoping it would cheer me up, a replacement of my Case Peanut, one with slanted bolsters and stag scales, but the main blade has side to side play, sending back for exchange :( well, I will send it back once I hear from them. It's pretty nice except for that one problem and while slip joints can get some blade play and you can fix it sometimes, I don't want to start out that way on a fairly expensive Case folder...but the pen and other knife was nice so that wasn't too bad ;)

Gary

Seeing that I'm an Aussie and don't really understand your systems and lingo sometimes , can you explain to me what your work has done ?
Have they laid you off , fired you , sent you home on full pay , sent you home with no pay , I just don't understand what they have done .
I know there's not much I can do from over here , but if you think of something , let me know .

Ken

Hi Ken, well, in their eyes I'm not fully capable to do everything my job requires, while I can argue they do need me to work from home, they won't change their mind.

NOW, what they told me was, I would still get paid, but some from them and some from a disability account, the company will make up the difference. SO, it SOUNDED like I'll be ok and not lose any money while I'm getting better, time will tell, as I don't trust them all that much, over 33 years with the same company doesn't account for much it seems with these guys, but, that's another story altogether.

And I dearly wish I could put this off time towards leather work but it won't work that well with the leg, so that'll have to wait for a while...

Thanks for the offer sir! And if I could, I'd zip down there and spend my days healing up in Aussie land ;)

Thought I was getting surgery today but just an exam, at first the X-Ray looked like I could get away with just a cast, but the doc wanted another view and that proved to be telling, the space where the larger leg bone meets up either ankle showed as not being evenly spaced so next Wednesday they will tKe another X-ray and if it still appears uneven I'll get a pin in Thursday

Right after the post above G2 broke out the stitching prongs and fixed the darn bone himself. When the doctor saw it upon next visit he couldn't believe how well the stitching was done. Almost like he has been doing stitches in skin and other natural elements for years.

Gary does it right folks - laid that stitch right in the grove and stitched it wet. ;)

Smoke for you G2. To one of the nicest guys on the board.

Fair winds and following seas brother.
