Bushcraft Knife challenge - Interest?

Gentlemen, while preparing my knife for shipment I had a thought. It would probably not be a bad idea to enclose a check with your submission for return postage when this is over with. If this has already been mentioned elsewhere and I missed it, I apologize.

Marcelo and I were thinking about that also. Shipping out 20+ knives to different addresses with insurance will cost alot of money for us. If you want to send a check with the knife that is fine by us, but we can also figure it out with paypal later.

Besides, some of you may not get the knives back;)

Guys I hate to do this, but I am out. The epoxy gremlins got me. Sometimes new ideas just don't work out, the first or the third time you try it. LOL I was trying to combine g-10 and rubber (my two favorite handle materials) and now I am out of time, can't get the knife there by Sat. I'll try to post pics tonight when I have better service.
Looking forward to seeing how everyone else does.

Are you just talking about return shipping, or are you talking about paying for shipping between testers as well?

Now that would get expensive for you :p

No, all us lucky testers live in the same area, so we are all testing them together

It would just be return shipping:)

Okay, here's mine. I had to sell the first one I showed because I needed the money at the time. This one will probably go out today. I almost dropped out of the challenge because I didn't have the time to make a knife but I really didn't want to miss out on it. I was able to do this one in a hurry in between other projects. It's 1095, micarta, aluminum, 4 5/8" blade, 9 1/2" overall, leather sheath. It didn't turn out perfect but I tried:o.

Well, it looks perfect to me Ray.

....So Tony and I, after noticing that a few makers may have trouble getting their knife here by dealine wanted to put it to the other makers whether you guys mind if we soften up on the deadline. In all reality we won't be nearly through with all the knives for a couple o'few weeks anyway. We realize that some makers have achieved some time management acrobatics to get it done on time, however we think most of the issues are more on the technical difficulty side with the newer makers. We'd like to know your opinion. Feel free to reply here or by PM to either me or Tony.

Also, just to update on where we are with the knives; The ones in Red are here.

Here it is..I know I will win some events with this one!!
UGliest 1st place
Heaviest , 1st place

...you get the picture.
I had very limited time on this one, so I had to whip it out today..I actually like it, but I would have MUCH prefered thinner stock...this thing is a TANK.

Anyway..I will ship it out ASAP

I did the final touches on the handle tonight, and I think its a great blade, hell, I like it, so thats what counts right?
Honestly, It performs well ( I have already tested it) but I will be making another with thinner stock...maybe a few.
I can tell you, making thick stock cut like thin stock, takes some grueling time on the grinder....BUT, you ain't killin the "Sojourn"..
PS, I think the name looked better on the conceptional drawing...now all I can think of is "Frank the Tank" from "oldschool".

If you want to keep the "Sojourn" theme, what about "Bivouac"? Sounds meaner eh?

Mine is going out tomorrow morning, so it should be there by Friday, maybe thursday.
Well, I for one jumped through hoops of fire to get this thing done on schedule, and think all the wimps that didnt make the deadline should start hanging out in "traditional slipjoints" from now on!!

Just kidding, I dont care..if mine gets tested early, I just get it back sooner!!
This is just for fun and bragging rights...a hard deadline is fine, but sometimes things are worth the wait.
So, as long as testing begins, and the other makers can get their knives in within a short period, we should all be fine?

Looks like you got a bunch of slackers. :D Just kidding guys.

we can also figure it out with paypal later.
Tony, I decided to go with the paypal option thinking that would lessen the work for you guys. Otherwise you'll have to keep track of who has payed and who hasn't.

I would like to use paypal as well.

Tony, paypal works for me. Let me know what you need.

I have absolutely no problem with it! I don't want to see anyone miss the deadline.

My knife is on the way to you guys in Andy Roy's box along with his contest knife. Here are some specs for it.

OAL: 10"
Blade Length: 5"
Steel: 3/16" thick O-1
Grind: Convex Saber
Handle Material: Double Black Canvas Micarta
Pins: 1/4" Stainless Steel Tube

A little background on why I chose this knife for the contest:

I know that you guys are going to get a bunch of real fancy looking knives with pretty handles and, in a lot of cases, more embellishments than usual. I thought about doing a "special knife" for the contest to help get some publicity, but after I thought about it for a while, I decided that it just wouldn't be honest.

My most popular model is the Delta Foxtrot. I've been making this model since I first started making knives. In fact, the first knife that I made myself from start to finish was the prototype for the Delta Foxtrot. Everytime I make a batch of knives, I keep one for myself. It's never "special". I always pick one out after I'm done finish-grinding the blades, and it's always the least pretty one.

The knife I sent you guys is a standard Delta Foxtrot out of my personal stash. This one came from my second batch of knives. Other than having double liners (I like a slightly thicker handle) this thing is exactly the same knife that my customers get.

Out of all my models, this one is my favorite. It is built for work ONLY. This knife isn't meant to be pretty. It isn't meant to be elegant. It's meant to function ,cut and be as comfortable as possible. That's it. All of my knives are designed in this mindset. They are user knives, nothing special, nothing glamorous. I know part of this contest was about looks, but a low score in that department doesn't bother me. Looks don't factor into my designs. I didn't want to show my future customers how pretty I can make a knife. I want to show them how my purpose-built knives perform. So here you go, a no frills Delta from my personal collection.

If you want to know what it looks like, just look at any black canvas handle Delta on Bladeforums. It looks just like all the others, maybe not as pretty. Here's a picture of one:

EDIT: One other thing is different from a standard Delta Foxtrot that a customer would get. Everyone else's has the spine edges sharp from the end of the thumb ramp to the tip for striking ferro rods, scraping, whatever. Normally, I leave them sharp for all the survival and bushcraft guys. I don't strike ferro rods with my blade so mine has the spine edges smoothed out. Feel free to use the cutting edge to strike the ferro rod for the fire building task. It can take it.

I thought about that after I mailed it. I will be sending some money in the next week or so for return mailing. Or paypal is actually prefered, just let me know. By the way I just realised i mailed my knife with no information on it. It looks like you already got it sorted out. I will send details about the knife later.

As long as all goes well tomorrow (fingers crossed), Mine will be boxed and ready to go in the mail Friday... which I know is a day before the deadline.

(maybe late Thursday... but I doubt it)

If you can't run with the big dogs,
Stay on the porch!

Those who didn't get done on time should be left behind - slackers!

Um, er, wait a minute.... my knife isn't there yet:o
Maybe start testing and accept the other as they roll in:D
