Camillus and Schrade of Old Given Short Shrift Now-A-Days

Over time my dad has become a fan of the schrade 2 3/4” stockman pattern, he uses one all the time as his primary knife. He’s still usually carrying a sak also but I don’t see him using it for cutting nearly as often as the small stockman.

Now my dad is not a knife guy, but he does appreciate a good tool and I enjoy supplying him with schrade jr stocks. He’s had a delrin 808 and an uncle henry 807uh, both of which got lost. At one point he lost this 1950’s stainless 808 and it returned, and he has an old timer 108ot. I’ve had another old walden 808 collecting dust for a while that he’s also going to get when I return the other two from sharpening and maintenance. The usual arrangement is he uses one until it dulls, then switches to the other one while I sharpen it. I ended up with them both in for sharpening at the same time, but that way he was forced to try out a schrade 835y that I gave him. He said that knife was “too big” 🤣

Paul, funny thing, my Grandad kept his knives razor sharp. My Dad on the other hand not so much. When I’d go home I’d grab some off his dresser and see what I could with just an old stone to give him some kind of cutting ability.

That’s real funny because apparently my grandpa kept his knives sharp but my dad will not do it to save his life. I can’t even get him to oil the blades even though he’s always around the garage with ample supplies of motor oil.

When I tease my dad about it his response is usually something like he doesn’t need to because I’ll do it for him. Fair enough.

IMG_0821.jpegIMG_0819.jpegI’ve been packing a stockman pattern the last few days. The always boring but very capable 34OT yesterday and a 98OT today. The rounded bolsters of the 98OT could have very easily made it my favorite knife to carry if I would’ve handled one before I ever got my first 34OT.

315 315 Jim, couple of nice Schrade’s. That 1903 wearing the issue barrel or has it been rebarreled? The section I can see looks very nice. OH

For New Years Day thought I would give the Herman Williams modified 834UH a ride in my pocket. So far it has cut open a new package of bacon (tough work, eh?). OH

Bruce, I think it’s the original barrel but it’s been smoothed up, polished and re-blued. I had 4 of them but sold one to a buddy for a .35 Whelen project.

Camillus four line #12 and a short line #68

Outstanding vintage pocketknives - gorgeous bone handles!

Down to one, a M1903A3, this one all original in a PG/cross bolt stock - shoots like a dream but not a hunting rifle. Always like seeing them. I have one picture, me shooting it about ten or twelve years ago at a range, not the best picture but my only one right now. OH

TheChunk91 TheChunk91 For the longest time (about 18 years) I agreed with your Dad. I carried a 807UH or a 108OT everyday when wearing dress slacks. The heavier knives bounced around too much and the small Stockman pattern fit my needs. I lost the UH first, then in 2005 lost the OT. That loss sent me down the rabbit hole of over-accumulating when I learned the Schrade replacements were off-shore built. Switched to a Case Knife but started looking in pawnshops and hardware stores for USA made Schrades, now I have a bunch of them (The above is a pawnshop replacement for my lost 108). Funny thing, as I had dropped dress slacks for more comfortable pants, I went to the medium size Stockman and Jack Knives that I already preferred for ARNG use. OH

I’ve got a 34ot and Dad is carrying the 835Y until it goes dull, then he will go back to his preferred jr stockman.

Dad isn’t a knife guy and for years all he used was a swiss army. It’s a proud knife knut moment that over the years I’ve been able to convert him to use older schrades and similar knives on a regular basis, in addition to him still carrying a sak. When he took the 835 out of his pocket for the photo he also two schrade walden 808’s in his pocket. Now that was an accident because he meant to put them in the house last night after I handed them back over from sharpening, but I told him he was really a knife knut now.

I was about four years old when my father gave me my first knife, which he bought at the base exchange at either NAS Lakehurst or NAS Glynco (don't remember which). Fast forward many, many years -- he had a pocket knife that he had carried for a long time. Best I can remember now, I think it was probably a jack pattern. Anyway, sometime in the 80s we were back for a visit and he told me that he had lost that knife. I figured this was the perfect opportunity to return the favor by giving him a knife, so when we returned home I went shopping. Although I had almost always carried a slipjoint of some kind I didn't know much about brands at that time. There was a knife shop in the local mall that I thought carried good brands (I recalled looking a Buck fixed blades there previously) so that's where I went. I thought this 885UH looked like something he would like and use, so I bought it and sent it to him. Years later when he passed away it came back to me. It showed signs of use 😊 and some rather aggressive sharpening, and the tip of the clip blade was bent a little, but otherwise it was in good shape. I peened the tip back in alignment, resharpened it, and put it back in the original box, which he had kept. I got out my 897UH a few days ago to carry for the new year and thought it was time to get this one out too, to spend some time with.
