Camping with sheeple and big Busse blades.

Will banning a knife stop a mexican gang member from stabbing you in the neck? Because it seems to me murder is already illegal and that doesn't seem to stop them.

Bring just about knife you want, but don't get it out until you hear "DOES ANYONE HAVE A KNIFE" asked about 5 or 10 times! :D
....
Also, if anyone asks about it, get it out and point the handle right at them, and say "have a look"

Its California. The Vegans and PETA types will be outraged you are cutting and burning up a log that may be home to worms and bugs, the hippy's will want to weight for the wood to split its self when it is ready to be fire with out all that violent chopping, the clueless will be amazed you can make fire with out a propane tank or brickets and lighter fluid and at least one a$$ hat will want to explain to you how your fire will melt the ice caps and kill polar bears.:rolleyes::eek::jerkit:

I grew up in No. Cal. There are all kinds in CA.;):D:thumbup:

If you don't take it you will miss it. If you don't need it stash it in your tent/bed roll/car/pack. You don't have to strap it on and parade around with it. If you use it act like you have some sense. No harm no foul. Better to have and not need than need and not have.

Would you be this worried about appearance if you just got a new hatchet or a 12 inch machete?

I here where you are coming from and again this is a tough call.

It is NOT a tough call. The criminals will STILL have weapons. Criminals will ALWAYS have weapons. Criminals BREAK laws. The difference is you as a law abiding citizen will NOT have a knife or gun or ANY method of self defense other than your hands. By banning knives, guns and similar, you just make a criminal's jobs WAY easier. And you make you and your loved ones EASY victims.
Further, if LAWS are passed, criminals WILL know that people who appear to be law-abiding citizens are almost assured to be un-armed - therefore, EASY targets and EASY victims.

Banning guns and knives MAKES crime easier for criminals. Therefore, and there is PROOF, crime and attacks will and do increase.

MOST criminals actually DO have fear of dying or being seriously injured. If there is a possibility of you having a sufficient means to defend yourself, most criminals will likely consider other options. There are no guarantees. But, those who "LOOK" like easy targets .... tend to be.
If you "LOOK" like a law abiding citizen and your laws don't allow you to defend yourself, you will become a target.

+1 ... it is THAT simple. Criminals are going to FIND ways to accomplish their tasks. If you as a citizen are un-armed - and worse, can't simply use a knife as a functional TOOL for everyday needs, you have GIVEN UP your rights.

Do you REALLY want to give up your rights and freedoms?????
To have rights and freedoms, sometimes you have to take a STAND!

If you can't or are not willing to take a stand, maybe you don't deserve rights or freedoms. Your choice.

Our country has lost MILLIONS of lives of soldiers who have TAKEN A STAND for our freedoms. In my book, people need to take stands against people like Fienstein and Clinton and others trying to take away our rights to own guns and knives. To me, THEY are criminals against our country and our rights as Americans. I wish more people understood. :(

If it is SO bad where you live that you fear for your safety and your daughters safety, then you should probably start gathering support from locals to clean up the mess..... or move. I am a realist as well. From what you are saying, you are willing to give up your rights and be a sheeple yourself. You are somewhat SUPPORTING Nanny state mentallity - at the very least, you are conflicted on where you stand. Do you REALLY believe banning more and more everyday rights and liberties is going to make you safer? Do you believe the BAD people will become better people by banning knives or guns? You CAN NOT remove weapons from criminals - it won't happen. Banning guns and knives is HORRIBLE as it takes your ability for SELF defense away and makes you a sheep - HOPING to be defended by STUPID laws that don't mean $#@&@ to criminals.

How long do you think it takes for your NANNY protection to show up to protect you?

How long do you think it takes the criminals to harm you and be gone?

Good luck!!!

This is what I agree with here. ;)

Ted is a FANATIC, but I generally tend to agree with him. He is just a bit extreme about how he presents his arguments.

-----------------------

To the OP: It seems to me you are accepting of your friends' different outlook on life. More sheltered, protected, the gentle life, sheep if you will.
Why are you worried they will not do you the same courtesy? Accept you as YOU are?

I will never call a person who does not accept me as I am a friend (and I don't 'hide' my FBMLE from my friends). I wouldn't even accept them as acquaintances. If anyone doesn't like my knife- or gun passion, then that's their loss. Certainly not mine, anyway.

+1

Whatever happened to expecting people to accept who YOU are?
What happened to standing up for who YOU are?

"Pretending" to be someone different for the benefit of others.... there are probably a few terms that could be used for that. None are very flattering in my book - So, I won't throw out the few that jump to mind. I am not trying to bash anyone here. My point is hopefully to help some here have a bit more insight and objective views into what they might or might not stand for.

I know who I am and what I believe in. I am NOT willing to cast aside my beliefs to appease others. Granted, there are times when it might not always best to "FLAUNT" certain beliefs in the faces of others. But, I see gun and knife rights as something that RIGHT NOW needs support and needs to be defended as a SIGNIFICANT right.

If you are out being a crazy lunatic with knives, you probably deserve to have people think you are crazy.

But, it is CAMPING for crying out loud. Camping is when you USE these tools (.... along with MANY other applications). I almost see it as criminal to NOT use the RIGHT tools if certain chores are best suited for a knife. If you are a respectable person using "TOOLS" as they are meant to be used, and they think poorly of you because of it. I QUESTION any value I put on actually wanting them around or carring what they think.
I would feel an obligation to SHOW these people that knives have a purpose and should not always be so dreaded. If they can't except that, then VERY SAD! :thumbdn: :grumpy: - Even sadder is the high probability that if the can't accept your uses and justifications for knives - especially when CAMPING, then these very same people who you want to hang out with are very likely to be the ones to vote to take your rights away from you. :grumpy:

I know a LOT of people who are leary of knives. I myself am sometimes a "little" more cautious or descrete around certain people. - Meaning not Flagrant about my uses of a knife. My intent is NOT to put more fear into these people But, I still do what I need to do and I NEVER apologize or actually HIDE my beliefs in my rights to use knives and how I consider them VALUABLE, functional and USEFUL tools. If and when I can show these people that a knife DOES serve many valid uses, I try.

Also, it is NOT the knife that needs to be judged. It is the PERSON that people need to judge and feel safe around or LEARY of.

Can you take your knives and use them where people feel comfortable around you?
Sadly, some people will and do judge "People" by the simple fact that you have, carry and use a knife - even if you use carefully and in a non-threatening way. But, you can either let them think that makes you a crazy lunatic or show them that your uses are valid, justified, resourceful and NOT crazy.

.

I think the whole thing is very simple.

I have the right to carry any knife I want when camping, that is my Constitutional right. ;)

So I really could give a crap less what anyone else thinks of me or my knife I choose to carry and it's none of their freaking business what I do anyway.

The way I feel is if they don't like it then they can just go away and leave me alone. :D

Use it as an opportunity so show those who are interested how useful of a tool it is. Maybe they'll shed the misconception that all knives are weapons.

Absolutely.
As long as the only exposure non-knife people have to knives is from news reports and horror flicks, they'll never understand.
Seriously, if they cannot grasp the usefulness of a knife after seeing it in use in THE WOODS, they are hopeless.
I say take it.

The same people that would whine about a large knife on a camping trip would be the first to whine about lack of shelter, prepared food and warmth in an emergency/survival situation. I can only imagine who would be the first in line for above mentioned comforts.
It's easy to say you want nothing to do with something or someone. Until they're needed.

I kept that knife so minty safe for so long,O well,,,,Look at it this way, when your buddys are batoning starter wood you can be spliting logs, when you baton,,,Give her a wack for me

Who knows maybe I'll just keep it safe to or trade it for Mojo, or something else that is grail material. We'll see. But after holding that knife I know that FSH is a great knife design that would do wonders in the wild.

Now laws,
California suffers not from messed up laws, but from rather ambiguous laws, that leave a lot of discretion to the individual police officer. There are a lot of good cops out there, but then LAPD has a rather menacing reputation about it. My best friends brother is LAPD, and he said that everybody is out to get them, and therefore they have to remain constantly vigilant. I'm not going to go into the more ridiculous things he said, and some things that were just plain wrong. But that statement alone shows that they will try to go and look for any excuse to take your "weapon" away from you. now I can't stress this enough, not every cop is like that. But I don't carry a fixed blade or a folder the way I want to, not because of the law, but because with my luck I will not run into a descent police officer.

And who am I to fight for those rights you speak of? Unlike many of you here, I was given them, thats is to say I've been a US citizen for few years. I consider what I have a privilege. Now I can agree and support you in your struggle. More over, I do sympathize with your cause and find it sad at times that questions of similar nature even have to be asked.

Also lets all keep careful here and not cross into politics.

once again I HAVE NO PROBLEM IN USING THE KNIFE IN FRONT OF THE PEOPLE I MENTIONED IN THE OP. What I do have a problem with is the way I legally can carry it. The law at least in my opinion, automatically forces me to show of the knife. That combined with the fact that most likely they are going to buy the firewood in bundles for like $5, and it will be dry. Makes a big knife less of the necessity on the said trip. Its just pros v. cons comparison. Pro being I'd improve my own skills and get some practice with my tool, con being I creep out some people. Now I doubt there will be more then 30 minutes of required knife use, the rest I'd just chop or try to carve something out. AFTER ALL THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THIS TRIP IS TO SOCIALIZE AND NOT SURVIVAL. For crying out loud we would be like 200 feet from the cars. I'm planing other trips/hikes where I'd go and use the knife the way it was meant to be used...chopping up random chains or motorcycles I find abandoned in the forest.

I also see a lot of support for SAR8, unfortunately I do not have that knife. It does look like a real sheeple friendly tool, that could do job right. Oh well, as I said if anybody wants to let me borrow one for the camping weekend I'd be happy to cover the shipping costs and would take it with me. I'll also edit the OP to reflect that.

I actually do carry a small folder and I always have taser (thats shoots 15ft or so) on me. Also I have a couple golf clubs and a baseball bat in my trunk. One on one, Id take my taser over a knife. Id also take an aluminum baseball bat over a knife as well.
I understand your logic. And I understand 230's point about laws not really affecting what a gang member does. I wish I could move but my house depreciated too much. I wish i had more control over voting and stuff but i dont. Im just a normal guy who is too busy with work and fam to really get involved in collecting signatures and organizing protests. I see you guys are very upset about this subject and its prob just best to let it go. We will agree to disagree on this issue. You are too one sided to see that there are both positives and negatives to these things. Its not black and white. What you are suggesting is like cowboy law. If they are packing then so should we. Thats a very fine line and every community has different needs.

I wish they would pass a law that said if you get caught in a gang related violent crime you and your entire family would be banned from living in my county. But I am pretty sure thats unconstitutional as well. People are F*^%ing crazy now-a-days. Let me ask you a question. If it was ok to carry a pistol here, do you think there would be more stabbings or shootings? Are you more likey to pull a gun if you have one on your person? Are you more likely to pull a knife if you have one on your person? If you are allowed to have a ten inch knife on you at all times and you go to the bar and get into a drunken fist fight with another, are you more or less likely to pull your knife out?

You are prob right when it comes to hardcore criminals. You need to protect yourself. but what about border line criminals? Or just regular people put in tough spots? If carrying, the confrontation may escalate to killing. Now if knives are regulated to some extent, then border line criminals may leave that stuff at home because they dont want to go to jail for carrying. Then when a fight breaks out in a bar, its not stabs that are exchanged but fists. You make very convincing points and have given me much to think about, but I still dont see the absolutes you see. I see alot of gray areas and situations that could go different ways.

Sounds like your original question answers itself. Simply a matter of weighing the options and deciding which are most important to you personally. That said, there’s nothing wrong with carrying something discreet.

Just tell them it's made from spikes that tree huggers put into trees to kill lumberjacks and the dead lumberjacks chain saw blades- forged with a stone hammer on a fire made of sheep poop, free range chicken feathers and recycled chainsaw oil all collimating into a tool really intended to defend pulp trees from toilet paper manufacturers!

Volk, don't you all have the occasional mountain lion attack up that way. I myself would definately be prepared for something of that nature.
Just tell them its better to be prepared than not. And if some disagree then they can just be the bait. ;)

I have an easy solution to keeping acquaintances from getting weirded out by the knife thing.

Camp on your own.

Problem solved.

Like I and many others posted you are way too worried about what other people think. ;)

Just being around those types of people you will likely be around would creep me out........ Sheeples, Pansies, Wimps, Tree Huggers and other assorted unsavory types who really shouldn't be camping in the 1st place.

This topic reminds me of something I had come up this past weekend.

My 8 year old son had a new friend over for the first time on Saturday. After getting them set up with snacks and drinks and PS3, I holed up in my room to clean a gun. It wasn't 5 minutes and the kids were back there wondering what I was doing. I got a little concerned that his parents would get upset when he went home and told them I was playing with guns while he was over there.

So I was telling all this to my boss, who is a big gun fanatic. He said his house is a gun house. If people don't like it, they won't be invited back.

I kind of liked that response. Plain, simple, and realistic.

I realize these are your friends you are talking about and you don't want to isolate them. But I agree with the general concensus that if you are using a knife for its intended purpose and not wielding it like a crazed maniac, it shouldn't be a problem. And if the friends don't like a knife carrying friend, well....

the amount of acquiescence in this thread is disconcerting.

here's to hoping I never worry about such things. (cheers)

It's the whole PC thing today that really gets on my nerves....

I will do what I want, when I want and how I want and I don't care if it's PC or not. ;)

They can take all of the PC crap and sell it someplace else because I am not buying.

Be a Leader ....... not a Follower.

"PC" is not for me either. I can't stand politics and/or bureaucracy.

Doesn't "PC" stand for "Global SUCK UP" or something?
