But what if the folder is born and identifies with being a fixed blade and wants to transition?
Could be it's just trying to make a point. But I'd refer it to a sharp psychiatrist to be on the safe side. ;)

I suppose you could have some kind of weird converting friction folder like so.

That's an awesome diagram and you definitely win the thread. As soon as that second handle pin/screw goes in, that thing becomes a fixed blade.

Sorry. If it folds . . . and it does fold . . . it's a folder. In fact, it's nothing more than a modified friction folder. But I'll give it "E" for effort.

Yes, that actually works. It's a fixed blade that incorporates folding blades in the handle. So you're technically correct. Well done! :)

Had I said "can a knife with a single blade be both a REAL folder and a REAL fixed-blade", you'd be wrong. But I didn't say that. And I'm not about to change my question mid-stream. So you win!

I voted yes. (I'm sure I'll be told it's a piece of art, or that I'm wrong LOL)

I was given this by a friend a little while before he passed away.

Hmm the plot thickens. Def not what OP envisioned but going by the thread title, an argument can be made. That one fixed blade is still...fixed though/.

Sure he means a singular blade. Fixed.

Name itself suggests it's nothing else but what it is. Fixed means FIXED in that one position perpetually.

True that. But if anyone votes "yes" from this point on, they could refer to AJ's example and they'd be correct.

Well hrm... that Is both a "folder" while being a fixed blade, I think that it in essence would be considered a fixed blade knife. Primarily since the (main) Blade of the Knife is in a Fixed location relative to the handle.

AJ: Nice piece with a Great amount of history with you attached. My condolences on your loss.

Tldr= blade fixed to handle without intention of movement of said blade = a fixed blade knife.

Thanks. Yes, great history. Hans was in WWII (on the German side, Coast Guard), immigrated to Canada after the war because of the assistance he had given the allies.

He asked me to use it on a deer sometime and I fully intend to do so. I've opened a couple bottles of wine with the corkscrew.

Yes, I suppose I could use that technicality to say it's really just a fixed-blade. But AJ legitimately opened a back door and I've got to give credit where credit is due.

Though considered a technicality or not, it is everything but the knife that folds.
Folding corkscrew, check
folding file(?), Check
Folding saw, Check

Folding Knife? error 404: file not found

I still would carry one in a heartbeat though.

Edit: if what I called a file is indeed a knife, then that should be considered two separate parts of one knife, a fixed bladed knife With a folding blade, or a folding knife With a fixed blade. Depending on which the owner views as the primary blade, most likely stating the fixed blade as the primary since it would likely be the most used.

Since one accompanies the other, it cannot stand anywhere but along side in regards to classification. Being not one blade that is both, but two separate blades that each does their own separate act independent of one another and serves as two individual blades on one knife. Hence, not being a folding fixed blade, but a folding And fixed blade.

A subtle yet significant difference.

OK. Seems as if it hasn't changed the voting much. And I can see both sides of it. Still, hat's off to AJ for coming up with the best contender in this thread. Well done, sir.

But once you put the second handle pin in, there's nothing that really distinguishes it from a fixed blade. Is the problem (for the purposes of this game) that you have to add and remove a part to change between friction folder and fixed blade?

Not a file, it's a blade with a protected point, I assume for gutting.

"FILE FOUND" ;-)
