Canadian knife law specifics.

I live in Toronto, Ontario and I'm 17, and I'm a bit confused right now. Is it illegal for me to carry an Endura 4 with the Emerson wave feature in my pocket if I am using it for utility purposes?

It is not illegal.

If you are not committing another crime such as a robbery, are not carrying it for general defensive reasons, and are not threatening anyone with it, then it is not illegal. We have very liberal knife laws in Canada in general.

I bought a Matriarch 2, with the Emerson wave feature a few months ago, and recently started carrying it. I never use it for utility purposes and I only carry it for self defence purposes. What consequences if any would I expect if I were caught carrying the knife in Toronto, Canada? Would it be a fine or something worse?

I think this means the laws here are relaxed enough to fixate on 'intent'. I've carried knives of every description around with me in and all over Canada for the past 50 years and no one has ever bothered to question the motives. I have never carried nor used a knife for the purpose of self-defense. If in fact your self-confidence is low enough that a knife is openly displayed entirely for the purpose of intimidation then maybe you want to start using a baseball bat or sledge hammer handle as a substitute for a walking cane. In anger poke somebody just once with a knife and you will undergo a life-changing experience psychologically. Take my word for it. I skewered a guy's hand with a SAK 35 years ago, entirely by accident, and police and hospital staff were not at all sympathetic.

Thanks 300Six for the advice.

I am driving Down to the US and buying some automatic knivesto bring back to Canada, does any one know the consequences for being caught trying to cross the boarder with illegal knives? Would I get a fine or something worse?

All Day Still, I can understand your interest in automatics but keep in mind this is a public forum.
Not only is the discussion of illegal activities against the rules here, there are a lot of police officers and probably some customs agents who frequent the site too. For your own good, please be careful what you post, and don't smuggle illegal goods across international lines.

I mean no disrespect, only trying to help. Welcome to BladeForums.

No doubt you'll be the first to let us know. Likely as not you will financially regret having tried it and then being caught. Take some Karate or Judo courses if you're really fixated on defending yourself against imaginary foes. This is peaceful country and most folks living here only manage to find trouble by specifically looking for it.

Just don't.
Or you could end up finding out how great you can defend yourself in prison...without any of the illegal knives you bought.

I got a Lighting OTF in the mail today, from ebay, I have no idea how they got that across the borader.

:foot:
You're seriously stating on a public forum, observable by everyone, that you are now in possession of a completely illegal item?

Minus several million points for lack of good thinking.

Never mention self defense to a police officer. ever. ever. rescue knife, watermelon knife, picnic knife, anything else at all. Carry for self defense falls under federal law, and is illegal.
As for provincial, and local law, I can't help you there. But what I can say is that a weapon offense will haunt you for a very long time. Might be time to look into swiss army's and opinels, before you end up a non-willing resident of kingston. (or your local prov pen of choice)

I have been caught at least twice by officers carrying knives. The first time I was around 19 with a CRKT M16 in my back pocket while driving some friends home late at night/early morning. This was in a rural area and the officer "wanted to hold on to it while he was dealing with us". In this case I had no problem and told him he could hold on to it, the last thing I wanted was a nervous cop. When all was done I forgot to ask for it back and it took me about a month before they shipped it to me.

The second time was a ride program with a lone officer. He wanted me to take the breathalizer in the back seat but asked me if I had any weapons on me. Knowing that a knife can easily be classified as one I told him I had my SAK Cadet on me. He asked me to lay it on the roof of the car before I got in the back. Once all was good I took it back. This was a semi rural area.

In both cases niether cop displayed any real concern with the knife. I would say though that if your knife didn't suit your reason for carrying it then you could be in trouble. Likewise, any knife on you weather used or not during a criminal act is likely to carry a charge for it.

Hello, just found this forum. I'm American and I'm going to a powerless cabin in the Yukon for 2 straight weeks. I would like to bring my Cold Steel Black Bear Classic fixed blade knife. I am going to be a few hours from Whitehorse. I plan on using it as a tool, but I really don't want customs to confiscate my new knife, is this going to be a problem?

Pack it in your checked luggage and declare it if flying.

If driving pack it in the trunk etc. and declare it.

Nothing to raise an eyebrow with that knife.

Don't bring; switchblades, balis, or throwing stars. If you're bringing firearms check out what you need to do ahead of time. Some restricted ones you won't be able to carry through personally.

I am thinking about RV'ing to Alaska.

I've read some of the Gun/knife laws in Canada and have some questions.

I normally carry a Spyderco Stretch SuperBlue in my back pocket

All my other knives would be in my Fifth wheel trailer

I have a knife collection.

Mostly Spyderco's like Southards, Millitary's, Endura's, ZT 0560, etc

Here's the knives I am wondering about

Spyderco Tatanka
Benchmade Bedlam Automatic*** Figure I need to get rid of this one

Cold Steel Trailmaster
Cold Steel Laredo Bowie

On a side note...

Is there anyway I can bring in a Ruger Super Redhawk 454, Mossberg 590A1, or Benelli M4. These would ideally be part of my Anti Bear gear. My plan at present is I don't think I can bring them in and will "mail" them.

For the Guns, I think you can get a transport permit, that would be the easiest way to go about it. Contact the provincial firearms officer and they can help you figure out what you need. The pistol may be out, and most of the country you would be traveling though would have some firearm restrictions (national parks and such) but I know there are some work-arounds, as in, locked up, and partly disassembled.

the knives (apart from your auto) should be fine, I don't know that you really need to declare them as such. Make sure the pivots are not super loose, its not a big deal. drive-across border checks seem to be more interested in drugs, alcohol and firearms. As long as it doesn't look like you are shipping in a bunch of knives for sale, or trying to hide something, you'll be alright.
