"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

That's a beautiful Keyfob, Kevin. I can't imagine how good it looks in person. I'm sure your grandmother will love it.

Carl and Dan, I had hoped to make it to the show but my wife thought she was going to need my help with something and by the time we figured out she didn't it was a bit late to get away. Maybe next year.

Maybe it was deliberate ;).

I am on my lunch break and can't see pics, but want to take a gander at that fob!

Blues, with your Solazzo the Turk avatar, everything you post I read with Solazzo's voice. If that makes any sense.

"They call him the Turk, he's good with a knife..."

Sollozo is known as the Turk. He's supposed to be very good with a knife. But only in matters of business, or of some sort of reasonable complaint.

Finally finished up the keychain for my grandmother's 90th :)

About 40 hours of constant work went into this one. Kind of hard to tell since its so small.

Here are a couple cell phone shots of it

This one turned out well. It absolutely glows in person and the highlights light up like gold. It is somewhat enthralling to look into it and follow the lines all through and around it in person. It has a week for the 5 coats of spar urethane to cure. I give it to her friday.

I thought you guys would like to see a few angles and I didn't want to throw off the "what traditional thread".

Add me to those who consider this a spectacular work. I always thought about starting some whittling and carving but never really gave it a go...still, I'm amazed by the work of those who can do such things. Beautiful work Kevin.

Fausto

Thank you Fausto :)

Give it a go! I just use a whittler pattern, no special tools. I am not particularly talented or artistic. I think it is just patience. This kind of stuff really helps my patience. Anyone can do this with a little time :)

With Peregrin and knarfeng's blessing, we need to get a MD Traditional get together thread going.

Yes!

If you like breakfast buffets, there's a place in Sykesville we found, called Beck's. They do a Sunday brunch that I can hurt myself at. Even have great crab cakes. Yeah, a breakfast get together, some knife passin around for chicken eying and coon fingering. Yeah, we can do that!

Then there's Johansson's on main street in Westminster. Great food and service.

Carl.

Thanks for all the support guys! just got back from my physical and completed my background check submission so its the waiting game. :)

Kevin that fob really is amazing! the coating has made the grain totally pop...I'm sure she is going to love it with so much effort put into it, and at 90 years old thats a very impressive birthday to be celebrating! :D

Keychain?

Hey Kevin, That's too darn beautiful to get banged up rattling around on a keychain. That deserves a nice gold chain and hang it around her neck like a pendant. It's a work of art, man, a beautiful work at that. Man, it's a pendant that deserves a nice chain.:thumbup::thumbup:

Carl.

I mean it man. That's a pure work of art!

Look, Karen and I spend a good amount of time downtown, (D.C.) at the National Gallery of Art, and we've seen our share of art. Not just paintings, but sculpture and modern art, folk art, you name it. Having said that, that little wood jewel you made is as good as anything I've seen in a museum. I'll tell you strait up, that you have more talent in your hands than some of these would be, overblown artist that get good money for their luke warm stuff. That's a beautiful work of art, no other way to describe it. It would look good in one of those fancy glass cases. Really.

Carl.

I don't know what to say aside from thank you Carl. Kinda speechless, but thank you again. Very sincerely taken.

I was thinking much the same. As usual Carl said it better than I could.

Agreed! You should sell stuff, richstag.

You guys really made me smile. Thank you so much.

Selling stuff does sound nice although I love giving. Every carving I have made has been a gift for someone special in my life. When I make one of these I think about the person I am making it for the entire time. I guess this one turned out so well because of the level of care inspired by the constant thoughts of my grandmother. She is a terrific women to everyone in her life and the time I spent on this really pales in comparison to what she has done for her family.

I know I am getting sentimental, but these little carvings are just that :)
