GT, I'm not doctor or dietitian, but I'd be willing to bet you'd have a long, healthy life based off of that diet. Plenty of fiber, capsaicin, minerals, and vitamins to help with heart health, cholesterol, and metabolism. One could do a lot worse than that diet. I remember reading an article about a 100+ year old woman who swore that whiskey and a cigar were her keys to good health! :D
I've never been fond of whiskey, and I gave up cigars almost 4 years ago, so I guess 100 years is out of the question for me! :( But, Shawn, I think you're right that the diet I described would be fairly healthy, especially given that my oatmeal always contains lots of fruit/vegetables/seeds/nuts (and sometimes meat) and my chili almost always has green vegetables in it! :):thumbsup: Obligatory oatmeal pic:

Wow! All you need to add to oatmeal is a little salt and butter! What, is that 20% oatmeal in that bowl? ;)

Yeah, not much oatmeal per se, PJohn; I start by putting 1/3 cup of quick oats in the bottom of the bowl and then add lots of other "flavor enhancers" (even a small handful of unsalted dry-roasted peanuts and 8-10 dark chocolate M&Ms :)).

I was going to say it reminded me of the Asian dish congee, until you added the chocolate. o_O

Interesting concoction, Gary. I'm sure it's . . . healthy. But calling it oatmeal is like calling a hot dog a salad just because it has some relish on it! ;)
One of my law professors told the class once that he ate Fruity Pebbles and Grape-Nuts, dry, for breakfast every morning. I thought that was strange!

I love that Opinel, though. On my short list.

I'm sure some of you northerners will get a kick out of this... I was lucky enough ( ) to have to be at work for midnight tonight, and it just so happens to be when our first real cold front moves through. I work outdoors, so I've been sitting out here for the last 5.5 hours in Carhartt bib overalls, a Carhartt hooded jacket, a fleece beanie with pull down fleece face shield, fleece-lined leather gloves, and knee-high wool socks.

It's 53*F. :rolleyes::eek::D

A rose by any other name...
How about if I switch from calling it "oatmeal" to calling it "nature's bounty breakfast stew"? :D:p
And yeah, by all means, get an Opinel!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Wow! It's 50 where I am now, and I'm comfortable with a thin, long-sleeved shirt.

For part of the time I lived in Boston my parents lived in Mississippi not too far from Louisiana. I remember visiting them at Christmas one year and walking along the river in New Orleans.

It was probably 50 degrees F, but it felt like it was freezing even though I was used to the cold. That humidity soaks the chill down to your bones.

I've never been a fan of oatmeal. In fact, I've never been able to develop a taste for it and won't touch the stuff unless I'm hungry and theres nothing else. My usual breakfast is some kind of bread and cheese, just to hold me over until an early lunch. And I'm not above a toddy with or for my breakfast. I suppose by most modern health standards I've had a bad diet for most of my life, but I'm still here and still going. If I have a real breakfast, it's eggs and bacon. Or eggs and fried spam. Or eggs and ham. or eggs and ...

I don't have any cholesterol problems though, in spite of my diet, and I can only wonder if its from the alcohol. They say alcohol is a solvent and preservative. With a today for breakfast and a drink or three with/after dinner, maybe it's like Gummout for the arteries? Granddad had his Bushmills, and made into almost 90. Grandma made it to 92 with her toddy's. Pass the Evan Williams, please.

Yeah, I think it's just the combination of not being able to escape it, the wind, the humidity, and the lack of sunshine. If I were out walking the dog around the block, I wouldn't be so bundled up.

Yeah, come to think of it, I was in Dallas once when a cold front came in. It was probably about 50 degrees and very windy with no sun. I remember wishing I had more than just a shirt!

A toddy is good for the body! Words to live by!

My dad used to say "alcohol cuts the grease".
Even so I quit my favorite lunch when my brother had a heart attack (he's fine). Used to be two eggs fried in bacon grease in holes bitten out of two pieces of bread (learned that from the Cher movie Moonstruck), followed by a (or maybe two) butter, peanut butter, and bacon sandwich.
