"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

Thanks, Jer. (I think maybe I saw you and your bag at Meijer's recently.)

Thanks, Darren and Vince. I think I'm going to keep it pretty simple, especially for at least the first week. I've figured out how to use Microsoft Teams as a video-conferencing platform; I'll also be able to turn my laptop to focus on a screen where I'm projecting the output of a document camera where I can do geometry demos like how to perform transformations or how to find rotational symmetries of Platonic solids. I plan to "meet" at our regular class times each day (rather than simply posting stuff for students to access at their convenience), hoping I can replicate at least some of the interaction that's typical of in-person classes.

The Michigan governor has now closed all the elementary and secondary schools for at least several weeks. And of more interest to many folks at BF, the outfit that runs a traveling Gun & Knife Show at maybe a dozen different sites around the state, a different site each weekend, has announced that their shows are canceled for the next 4 weekends. And Founder's Brewing has closed their taproom!

I'm beginning to feel I'm in a science fiction novel. Most of those turn out okay, right?

Everybody loves the Unknown Comic. It's really not a problem at the bank, Prester John Prester John .

Geometry and It-wittery! I salute you. Good idea to meet at the right time.

I have a couple of guns going to a show in Indiana. I hope that one stays the course.

Oh, yeah.

I started to watch one about a saboteur who upset the police by not acting like a saboteur. "They're supposed to be inconspicuous! This one dresses up in a monkey suit and kills people!"
I can't say how it ended though. It just made me tired when assistant scientist Dr. Charmingpuss Hotbody came gliding into the office like something out of Vogue in the fifties, balloon skirt and all.
But I predict that she and Lieutenant Studley get together by the end of the movie.

Actually, I've been thinking about The Last Man on Earth. Not sharpening stakes yet, though.

Oops, you said novel.

So I'm thinking about Camus's The Plague.

The small company I work for has been investing heavily in expanding and perfecting its remote access network and tele-conferencing capabilities the past several years. It looks like their foresight is going to pay off.

On a lighter note, anybody want to share how their traditional knives are going to help them pass the time during the quarantine/social distancing/zombie apocalypse? I for one may begin by finishing this spoon:

I'm going to finally saw a slab off that chunk of maple I bought from the estate of the nonagenarian who cut the tree and milled the lumber all by himself shortly before his demise, and put some handles on some languishing blades.

If only I had a sawyer's assistant like Dr. Charmingpuss Hotbody. Her balloon skirt would catch all the sawdust.

I'm on the other side of the screen Gary @5K Qs
My 9 year old stepson's school was just closed for at least 2 weeks so we'll be learning remotely via Google.

I recently read The Plague. It's harder to quarantine a city, nowadays. Hopefully the panic will die down soon.

The panic will and already has caused more harm than virus...I love how the Chinese govt reports infection rate cut down to 20 percent or somesuch...well yes if you lock people up and weld them in....whats going to happen if you let them out again? which will surely be what happens come the revolution...oh but you had one of them already...

Not sure what the earthworks are about but it does add an air of disturbed burial siteness to the place...disclaimer: no one is buried there that we know of.
Cant for the life o me work out why they decided to move this building to Dalmeny circa early 70s.

This church originally stood in Nerigundah. The only other building of its c1860 vintage was the Nerigundah Post office which along with most other buildings in that locality along with 100s of 1000s of acres of the surrounding bushland now looks like this

As quoted from a post by @Insipid Moniker - "If it was Corvid it would be a plague of crows, which would be much more interesting." :D

I had said the same to my wife but she didn't hear the R (me with my Mainah accent ) and so missed the joke. BUT, I reminded her of a favorite CORVID related painting we got to see in person at the Tetryakov Gallery, in Moscow Russia

The ROOKS HAVE RETURNED by Alexei K. Savrasov 1871

It is more interesting

Interesting painting yes, the Rooks returned here this week on my birthday, early this year. Always like to hear them cawing and this is one of the few places in this country you can find them. Magpies-millions, Jackdaws the same, Ravens too and Hooded Crows, Jays some Nutcrackers but Rooks the only ones who migrate.

I did not know that Rooks are the only Corvid migrators. Thanks for that Will Power Will Power . Here, our Corvid population is always hanging out at the bird feeders. ;) I "took care" of a crow when I was a kid. Neighbor was a wildlife rehabilitator for the state of Maine. I -in effect- had a pet crow. He became trained to fly off my arm and return for food. Was a very thrilling experience for a 11 year old. Been a crow friend ever since.
