Cutting your own hair saves a lot of cash too:thumbsup: Mind you, my hairdresser is such a beautiful woman it's hard to stay away;) Have to see if this is another of those self employed businesses about to be annihilated by the latest 'measures' :(

I cut my own hair hair from the early 90's. Since I have either a #2 or #3, any fool can cut it - even me! :D However, the past year or so I've been going to a good old-fashioned barbers, mainly because I like the place, and don't want it to close. Brian charges £3.50 ($4), and I usually give him £6, because I don't know how he makes a living  Unfortunately, I'll have to get the clippers out again, so I just hope Barber Brian (Baa baa baaa baa Barber Brian!) is still in business after all this comes to an end

Well folks - New Zealand has gone into shut down, No schools are to remain open except for the essential workforce ( police, fire, hospital ) parents of children- they can keep going for the next week - then all schools will be totally closed,No one is to go to work - if you can- work from home otherwise tough, unless you are Police, Nurse/ Doctor / Hospital staff or Fire. If you are driving - chances are you will be stopped and you will need a good excuse or they will crack down on you.
We are allowed outside- but only in our yards, if we are to walk outside the property- we must keep 2 metres apart when walking past other people.
No shops are to open and have been ordered to shut now apart from essential shops such as Grocery shops, Gas stations, Pharmacies.
4 weeks in stage 4 shutdown, meaning we cant have our daughter ( my Step ) come into the house to say hi- even though she lives in the same town - no meeting up in the park etc - total lockdown.
We havent lost anyone yet, and I think this is extremely wise as it will contain this Virus which already has learnt to mutate ( My daughters words - ER Nurse  )

My daughters advice is to take a couple of plastic bags with you if you need to go and get gas - prescriptions etc - if you have run out of hand sanitisers - use soap and water mixture in jar or used Hand sanitiser bottles ( well cleaned ) and cut swabs out of new dishwipes, use these to hold petrol bowsers etc and dispose of, once you are in the car- swap your hands before you touch anything!!
Be safe my friends - please just be safe- slow down to take these precautions.

I think New Zealand has acted swiftly before we have had any deaths- although we have had a spike in cases- I believe this is from people being called back to NZ- with mass traveling before we closed the borders to NZ, and the wait for test results to come back.

We still wont get through this unscathed because we have stupid stupid people OR we have people who have real bad attitudes and believe the World owes them- and no one is going to tell them what to do- theres plenty of those here in NZ.

Example - today I was speaking to a guy in a workshop - normally a pretty decent fellow- but he has been waiting for his Wife to come home from India - well she came Home last Friday- all weekend would have been make up for lost time Im thinking- so she is now is at home having to do the mandatory isolation 14 days- and where is he standing this morning? ... right in front of me!!!! I calmly told him that I hope his concious helps him if I get the virus off him after just having open Heart surgery, also having had Cancer my immune system is not looking forward to meeting this new Threat - what a bloody idiot!!
I also went and gave the boss in the shop a raise up as well because that guy should NOT have got out of his car - THIS my friends is why Viruses Spread because of dumb, dumb people like this .
I believe isolation should mean- you get off the plane- taken to a bus - get taken to a military/ Hospital type of building and stay behind walls until 14 days are past, tested clear - THEN you can catch a taxi or shuttle home.

That's a good idea to make your own sterilizing clouts. Lord knows I have plenty of rags.
Gin would be a good hand sanitizer, but you might get crap for driving around with an open bottle of it in the car. Duh, or rubbing alcohol. I'll see if that's still available when I go out for a condolence card (cousin-in-law's mother) and a get well card (cousin).

Speaking of hair-cuts, I've been using a flobee for decades. The clipper that slips onto a vacuum cleaner hose.

Our tattoo, body piercing, and tanning shops have closed. And gyms.

As I understand it - for alcohol to be effective as a sanitizer it must be at least 75% of the mixture (added to water or other). Gin and vodka at 80 proof don't cut it.

My technique for grabbing the gas station filler is to use a paper towel as the cover. I hope that is sufficient protection. :( Intended to use baby wipes (non alcohol based cause that's all that was left) but discovered that these freeze and become blocks of useless. As spring evolves to summer, I just might use those rather than paper towels, though the PT seem easy, practical and mess free.

I punch keypads with a pencil eraser end. Hands sanitizer after, even when using those simple protective devices, before I touch anything else. Nearly impossible to keep up with all the potential to get contaminated. :poop:

Stay safe Duncan, with your recent health scares, I've been very worried about you, some other members too, most of us aren't spring chickens! It sounds like you are taking care, and getting good advice. Unfortunately, there are stupid people everywhere, and unfortunately, one of the great tragedies of the world, is that, very often, the dumbest people think they're the smartest o_O

Things are pretty much the same here, though we were slower to react. There are currently still a lot of people going to work who should be at home, and more people out and about than there should be in our overcrowded country. It's not like in London, up in the north, there's still plenty of food on the shelves, but it seems inevitable that there'll soon be a total lock-down, in part due to all the stupid people, who like the guy you mentioned, are just not able to behave responsibly towards their fellow citizens. Stay safe everyone

I have a very bad feeling that once this crisis passes, a lot of businesses and institutions will discover it's cheaper for them to remain online only. ...

There are so many mundane social interactions that I don't want to give up, and I'm actually starting to feel depressed and anxious at the idea of everything changing in a way to make us all more and more isolated in the actual world, even if we are more connected in virtual space. ...
I understand what you're saying. A couple weeks of quarantine is an inconvenience, but wouldn't be a terrible hardship. (boredom can be a luxury) Months of all business shutting down, millions out of work for who knows how long is another story. ...

Sorry to be such a bummer today, I think I need to go out for a long walk tomorrow morning and get some fresh air and exercise. Take care, everyone!
...
Hang in there, Rachel!:thumbsup: I share your "very bad feeling" about what the future holds after this health crisis is over, and I suspect the economic repercussions are going to be worse than those related to health. But each of us can only do our best, which individually isn't much; collectively, we can hope that maybe it makes a significant difference. When I watch old movies (from pre-1960, let's say), it's amazing that "average" people are portrayed as happily living in conditions that many of us today would consider to be quite squalid. If we have to, I'll bet we can adapt to dialing down the standard of living.
And I heartily endorse taking long walks! I went for a 92-minute almost 6-mile walk Sunday afternoon, and it improved my attitude significantly. In the name of "social distancing" I've stopped riding the city bus, so I've been walking about 10K-15K steps (6-8 miles) per day, and it's helping me physically, mentally, and emotionally, I think. :):cool:

As an Alt Ed teacher, I was already used to posting video lessons and worksheets online. So, my prep time stayed pretty much the same.
What did change is my interaction time with the students. When I was teaching in the classroom, I'd reach all students and take care of all I needed to within that two hour class period. Now I am fielding texts, emails, and phone calls all day long. And like you said, learning has now become more of a struggle for them. Learning online is not as effective as having a teacher who can explain and react to the needs of the students.
Thanks for the description of your teaching situation, John!:cool::thumbsup: I'm still trying to maintain our regular 50-min class sessions 4 days a week via video conferencing, so that helps maintain some interaction with students, but I don't know if I can keep that up for the 7 weeks remaining in the semester after we "get back from" this week's spring break. And I'm woefully unprepared, technologically and pedagogically, for online teaching. I wish I knew a lot more about how to create video lessons (minimal equipment requirements, optimal approaches, etc.) to facilitate an asynchronous component to my class.

Hello my old friends I thought I'd drop by and say I hope all of you are fairing well in this craziness that's come our way. I'm locked up in my apartment waiting to see what's next and I guess that's all any of us can do. Take care and keep low I'll be passing through more often.
Randy
Good to see you checking in, Randy!:thumbsup::)
"Play us a song, you're the guitar man." ;)

I am not a doomsayer. Among family and friends I am considered a source of calm & reason. I keep posting COVID-19 related "awareness" posts here in BF because I do believe that reason and calm can only prevail if we are aware of the current science.
...
Do with it as you will. Shoot the messenger (me) if you prefer. BUT - please take care. Remember that it's not just the percentages of deaths that are a concern (8% to number of cases in Italy) but also the overwhelming of our medical facilities that will not allow for proper care of all other medical emergencies, serious illnesses, accident victims, births, all requiring diminished and burdened medical infrastructure.

Here is IMHO a worthy read - COVID-19 - do the Math.

BF is my safe social distancing community. Thank you!

Sorry - one more point :( - If we choose to dismiss the warnings and blithely go on about our daily activities we are ensuring the worst case. Even if you are strong and vital - if you carry the virus you could infect scores of others who do not share your basic good health and strong immune system. That is utterly irresponsible.
...
Ray: It seems you and I are pretty much on the same page on this.
...
And to those stocking up on ammo or whatever, I for one would far prefer meeting my maker having perished on some errand of mercy than having perished defending my hoard of toilet paper.
Thank you @Just Tom. Very well said

I too have said enough on this topic.

:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup: :):):):):cool::cool::cool::cool::cool: :rolleyes:

This is me, now basking in the thunderous applause to my last sentence :D
Thanks for the link, Ray!:thumbsup::thumbsup: The guy makes a compelling (if somewhat long-winded ) case, IMHO. It's hard to argue with the math, although there are SO many unknown factors that the models have to just make guesses about. I think I'm with you and @Just Tom. on these issues.

Happy Birthday Paul
@paulhilborn
For sure, I hope you have an enjoyable birthday, Paul!! :):thumbsup:
How does it feel to hit the Big Four-Oh?? :p:D:rolleyes:

Take care of yourself Duncan.

I got my hair cut three weeks ago, and I only get a haircut every six months or so.

I used to cut my hair every week when I was younger and singler. :D Now that I'm older and more married, I'm content with a trim every month or so.

I like that phrase Christian! :D

When I was a small kid, we were at a large wedding reception, and by chance my dad bumped into his old barber. Looking mildly disturbed, the barber said, "I hope you don't mind me asking, but who cuts your hair now?" The answer was my mother

Cutting your own hair saves a lot of cash too:thumbsup:

Better spent on knives I think. ;)

It's accurate isn't it?

I have a feeling that many wives and mothers are going to get a crash course in hair cutting before this is all over.

My mother cut my hair. Once. I refused to let her cut it again. And my wife cut my five sons' hair. Once!
