"Carl's Lounge" (Off-Topic Discussion, Traditional Knife "Tales & Vignettes")

I do agree about the handle length for safety consideration but setting a long handle in the small eye of an hatchet is a problem. The solidity of the engagement of the handle in the eye of the hatchet's head may be insufficient and poses other risks to the user. A solution would be to get a slip fit handle (like for tomahawks) but i don't know of a hatchet's head designed this way.
The best is to ask in the axes subforum, there are acknowledged contributors and true experts there and they would give good advices.

Dan.
Got me there.
Baryonyx Knife Co. has some Euro/Biscayan slip on axe heads. I don't know how small they run. I think they're mostly Italian.

So you are missing Adam Bell from the list of three.

Seems the whole tale is here: https://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/eng/hml/hml15.htm

Full text is "Hero Myths and Legends of the British Race"

Well done John

Does anyone here know anything about axes/hatchets? My grandson, who is 10 and on the skinny side, would like something for chopping limbs in the woods around his house in Tennessee. For his birthday I gave him a folding saw, which I think is much more practical than an axe, but he still wants a "chopper." Something small enough for him to use won't have much power or real usefulness, but that's what he wants, and that's what gramma wants to get him.

Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I think you're right about the folding saw Alan

A juvenile delinquent! The only legendary hero is Arthur Pendragon, the King Arthur, defender of the Celts of the British Isles and Armorican Brittany against the Germanic invaders.

Dan.

The 'Germanic invaders' have had their feet well and truly under the table for a good few years now! :D ;)

So my wife was looking for ideas on what I'd like for Christmas, a new knife perhaps? I told her I'd prefer a new knife sharpener, and I knew just what I wanted and would order it.

So the Work Sharp Ken Onion Elite arrived a few days ago, and I was advised I should let her wrap it for the 25th. My response was, at 70 years old I shouldn't have to wait to use a new toy, you just never know what might happen.... It worked.

I set it up and used the blade grinding attachment (the Elite includes the Ken Onion Work Sharp and the blade grinding attachment) to sharpen an old Utica Cutlery Chefs knife I had laying around my work area. I gotta say this thing is the bees knees! I spent 20 minutes or so on it, using three belts from medium to fine, and took it upstairs to show my bride. She was making a sandwich for lunch, and proceeded to test it out on a tomato. Son of a gun did it slice a tomato! I got a nice even 20 degree grind on the edge. It was shaving sharp, and it looked like I knew what I was doing! I'm impressed!
Merry Christmas to me!

Wonderful gift. My wife and I do the same thing regarding gifts--if they come early, we don't have to wait.
May have to get that sharpener next Christmas.

I don't think you'd regret the purchase, John.

I've been using Lansky and KME guided rod systems for years and keeping the families' knives sharp. My youngest son and his wife brought a couple of Shun kitchen knives for me to sharpen. The blades were so chipped and dinged up it took me forever to get them usable again. I decided I needed a better tool. This setup will do it. I'll practice on my own kitchen and user work knives before doing anyone else's knives, or doing any of my "good" knives.

Peregrin Peregrin really impressive set-up there  Fine, clean orderly work-bench too. You should see my one in the unheated  shed in the countryside, sawdust, shavings metal and wood, ancient pots&cans from the previous owner & century :D Plus a hand driven grindstone with water trough under it. Also certain mouse/rodent droppings...:poop: The Cat reproached me about this so I let her in there :D

A great Christmas present and you're right, carpe diem

Will, I had to do a pretty significant clean up to make room for that set up! I've also managed to select a view that leaves out the clutter!
I'd like to try that grindstone!
I catch the occasional mouse too!

I'd forgotten that. I think I saw it and wasn't wild about it, despievte my admiration for Steve Martin.
That's pretty much the only scene I like in the whole movie. My wife and I will frequently be driving around and decide to stop somewhere for food; inevitably one of us will say "I woooood like... to buy... an amburgeuer" :D
